Event #26: $10,000 Razz Championship

Dia 1 Começado

Welcome to Day 1 of Event #26: $10,000 Razz Championship

Ray Dehkharghani, last year's champ.

The great game of making the worst hand in stud, colloquially referred to as razz, has a long and storied history at the World Series of Poker, and it's time to write the next chapter in the $10,000 Razz Championship starting today.

At 3 p.m., cards will be in the air for the first of three days of the Event #26: $10,000 Razz Championship, which will begin play in the Brasilia Room.

Last year in this event, noted mixed game player Ray Dehkharghani topped a field of 100 entrants for a first-place prize of $273,338. In the process, he denied Jason Mercier what would have been a second bracelet for the summer and, if events still unfolded afterward in the same fashion, would have made for three overall and a handsome windfall from his prop bets.

This year, there isn't likely to be quite that much excitement, but it's still a prestigious event along with all of the rest of the $10,000 Championships, and a stacked field is expected. Players will play out 10 one-hour levels, each starting with a stack of 50,000 with limits at 500/1,000 and progressing to 4,000/8,000 by day's end. There will be 15-minute breaks every two levels and no dinner break, so it'll be a long grind of wheel chasing.

Registration will end around midnight, after Level 8.

Early Action... Away from the Felt

Early levels in these Championship events tend to be on the slower side, and this razz tournament has been no exception thus far.

However, away from the felt, players are throwing down plenty of coin. Allen Kessler has organized a $1,000 last longer, and plenty of players have walked over to hand him either a chunk of money or a yellow $1,000 chip. He said there's around 20 entries so far.

Defending Champ Drops Another

Nível 1 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Ray Dehkharghani had a strong board against Harley Thrower, betting fifth and sixth streets when we arrived, but he checked seventh.

Dehkharghani: {x-}{x-}/{a-}{7-}{3-}{9-}/{x-}
Thrower: {x-}{x-}/{7-}{5-}{q-}{5-}/{x-}

Thrower bet on the end, and Dehkharghani took some time before calling. Thrower announced a seven-six, rolling over {6-}{4-}{2-}, and Dehkharghani mucked.
