Johnson Bags Chip Lead Going Into Day 2 Of Mixed Triple Draw

Event #52: $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw saw a bigger turnout than last year’s iteration of the event, with 353 compared to last year’s 309. This first day saw a $783,200 prize pool created, guaranteeing the final 53 a minimum of $4,069, with all eyes on $181,978 for first place.

Topping of the chip counts was two-time WSOP bracelet winner Marco Johnson, who bagged 228,500. The California resident has already secured seven cashes at the 2023 World Series of Poker and one final table. Johnson’s bracelets have come in No-Limit Hold’em and H.O.R.S.E, but he has proven to all of his peers his proficiency in all forms of poker, having recently enjoyed a deep run in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship. With this bag today and his wealth of experience, he looks to add to his already decorated resume.

Others who bagged large include WSOP bracelet winners Nacho Barbero (216,500), Maxx Coleman (210,500), as well as other notables like Bryan Micon (208,000), John Bunch (196,000), and Jake Schwartz (175,500).

Plenty of others still see their chances to add this bracelet to their resume, such as recently crowned five-time bracelet winner Brian Yoon (157,000), Lynda Tran (114,000), Cary Katz (103,000), Chino Rheem (87,000), Maria Ho (82,500), and WSOP Main Event Champion Koray Aldemir (81,000). They join a cast of star-studded players heading into the second day of this event.

Not all players had good fortunes today. David “ODB” Baker was unable to find any success in this field in addition to Eli Elezra, Yufei Zhong, Adam Owen, and Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi. Daniel Negreanu was one of the last casualties of the night, exiting just ten minutes before the end of the day. They will have to look towards other tournaments this summer in pursuit of a bracelet.

Defending champion Dominick Sarle also exited the day towards the end, leaving the throne open for a new player to take a seat.

Some 145 players will return to the Horseshoe on Friday, June 23, at 1 p.m. local time with blinds at 1,500-2,500 and limits at 2,500-5,000 in the 11th level of the tournament. Levels will last an hour each, with a 15-minute break occurring after every two levels. Players will continue to play for 10 levels before calling it a night.

Action was picked up with Daniel Negreanu all in for his last 4,500 from the button which saw a player in the hijack and a player in the small blind call him.

All players drew two on the first draw with action checking through, all players drew one on the second draw with action checking through again, and on the final draw only Negreanu drew while the other players stood pat.

One player turned over a Qx8x7x5x2x but Negreanu turned over a 9x7x6x5x3x for a nine seven and he tripled up in the late stages of the night.

Katz Takes From Turner

Cary Katz opened from under the gun and was called by Jon Turner in middle position.

Katz took one on the first draw while Turner drew two before calling a bet from Katz.

The same drawing pattern was repeated on the second draw with Katz again betting and getting called.

The final draw saw Katz stand pat and the check after Turner took one. Turner tapped it back and mucked once Katz tabled 8x7x5x3x2x.

Benny Glaser moved all in from middle position before a player on the button raised, receiving a call from the small blind.

The small blind took one card on the initial draw while both Glaser and the button took two after which the small blind led out and was called.

The second draw saw the same drawing pattern repeated with the small blind betting once again and getting called.

The small blind stood pat on the final draw. Glaser decided to take two and the button chose one. On the final betting round, the small blind fired one last barrel, getting a fold from the button. Glaser, knowing he was beat, started to leave his seat as the small blind turned over 6x4x3x2xAx to send the mixed game specialist out as the day nears its end.

Altizer Quadruples Up

A player opened from the cutoff and Von Altizer called off for less on the button. Both the small and big blind players came along to give Altizer the opportunity to quadruple up.

All four players took two cards on the first draw after which the small blind checked, prompting the big blind to bet. That bet was called by the cutoff and small blind.

The second draw saw the small blind again take two while the three other players each drew one. Action then checked through to the final draw.

On the final draw the same drawing pattern as before was repeated with all four players checking. Altizer showed down 8x7x5x4x3x to secure a quadruple up late in the day.

Crazy Mike Takes Out The Defending Champion

Action was picked up with Dominick Sarle all in against Mike "Crazy Mike" Thorpe with no other players in the hand.

The first two draws Thorpe drew two and Sarle drew one, with the final draw seeing Thorpe draw one and Sarle stayed pat.

Sarle turned over 9x5x4x3x2x for a perfect nine and Thorpe turned over his drawing hand which was a 6x5x3x2x. On the final draw Thorpe peeled up a 7x to make a seven against Sarle's nine and he took down the pot while Sarle would not find the back to back runs.
