Shen Leads the Way; Shak, Kornuth and Koon Bag Big in Event #29: $10,000 Short Deck No-Limit Hold'em

Nível 8 : 0/0, 1,000 ante

The latest high-stakes contest of the 2021 World Series of Poker at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino reeled in some of the biggest names in the world of poker for Event #29: $10,000 Short Deck No-Limit Hold'em. Upon completion of eight levels of 60 minutes each, the tournament attracted a field of 59 entries and 19 players bagged up chips for the night.

At least one further player has already bought in and the late registration remains open until the start of Day 2 at 2pm local time on Friday, October 15. With fewer than two dozen contenders in the mix so far, it's very likely to see several notables jump in at the last minute with a fresh stack of 60,000.

Leading the way at the end of Day 1 is China's Ye Shen with a stack of 361,400, who is closely followed by Young Ko (340,000), Chad Campbell (326,300) and Dan Shak (320,500). Other big stacks include the 2019 finalist Chance Kornuth (262,000) and freshly minted GGPoker ambassador and WSOP bracelet winner Jason Koon (235,400).

Another five WSOP champions advanced including Joao Vieira, Dan Zack, Stephen Chidwick, Daniel Negreanu, and Ben Yu.

Among the notables to bust throughout an incredibly fast and action-paced day were Dario Sammartino, Cary Katz, Sergi Reixach, Erik Seidel, Eric Kurtzman, Peter Jetten, Giuseppe Iadisernia, GGPoker Short Deck Squad member Denys Chufarin and Jake Daniels.

Daniel Negreanu late-registered in the final level of the night and went zero for five in his first five flips, utilising the strategy to invest one stack of 20,000 at a time. The six-time WSOP bracelet winner then doubled twice during the final hands of the night to ensure a playable stack for Day 2.

During the final stages it appeared to be a close race for the overnight lead as Young Ko was pacing the pack. He was involved in some of the most memorable hands including a three-way all-in with set-over-set in which he made quads and a four-way all-in during which he scooped it all. However, he lost some chips at the very end and that propelled Ye Shen into the top spot.

Shen's biggest pot came in a double-up through Dario Sammartino when he made the nut flush against a ten-high flush, an improbable setup in Short Deck poker. He knocked out Sammartino on the first entry soon after to further rise on the leaderboard.

Chris Brewer dominated the early stages and won a large three-way all-in when he turned a flush to leave Brandon Delnano drawing dead with aces full while Gabe Patgorski had one out with trips jacks. However, the run-good stopped soon after and Brewer lost multiple showdown pots to end the day below the average.

Jason Koon

Day 2 will recommence with a running ante of 1,200 and a button double ante of 2,400. The field size will certainly increase as the late registration remains open until the cards are in the air for level nine. On the penultimate day, the tournament is slated to play down to the final five players for the live-streamed showdown.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back then to provide all the action from one of the most exciting poker variants.

A Four-Way and a Three-Way All-In

Nível 8 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

As the madness in the last level carries on, table 437 featured a four-way and a three-way all-in in quick succession.

Cary Katz: {8-Spades}{7-Spades}
Zachary Milchman: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Dan Zack: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Young Ko: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The board came {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Ko swept it all with kings full of tens. Zack and Katz had an add-on to redeem while Milchman was eliminated.

Up next, Ryan Laplante was all-in for 16,600 and Katz invested his final bullet, once again getting called by Ko.

Ryan Laplante: {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts}
Cary Katz: {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Young Ko: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

This time, it was Laplante who tripled on the {9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{10-Spades}{10-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} board as Katz was eliminated by Ko in the small side pot.

Negreanu Loses all the Flips

Nível 8 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu lost his second stack with {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts} against {k-Clubs}{10-Spades} when the board ran out {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}.

He then got it in with the {k-Spades}{10-Diamonds} against Dustin Dirksen with the {k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. Commentating for his vlog, he said "we need a ten." He spiked two of them on the {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop.

"Now we need to avoid a jack," he continued and he did that on the {8-Hearts} turn. However, the {j-Clubs} followed on the river and Dirksen improved to jacks full of tens.

Negreanu will likely re-enter soon again.

On a flop of {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Spades}, Young Ko bet 10,000 and Cary Katz called. Chad Campbell then jammed for 19,000 and Ko reshoved. Katz tank-called for the 45,000 he had behind after his call.

Chad Campbell: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Cary Katz: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Young Ko: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Brewer Vaults Into the Lead

Nível 5 : 0/0, 500 ante
Chris Brewer
Chris Brewer

With 31,500 in the middle and the turn showing {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, Gabe Patgorski moved all-in for the last 15,800. Brandon Delnano called and Chris Brewer than asked for a count on the all-in. Once it was determined, Brewer went over the top and Delnano sunk back into his seat with around 70,000 behind.

After using three time bank extensions, he eventually sigh-called.

Gabe Patgorski: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Brandon Delnano: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Chris Brewer: {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

Delnano was already drawing dead with his aces full while Patgorski had one out to make quads. There was no miracle as the {6-Clubs} river shipped the large pot to Brewer. Patgorski redeemed his final add-on chip to start with a fresh 20,000 in chips.

Jason Koon
Jason Koon

In the last hand before the break, a four-way pot with 3,000 each led to a checked through flop of {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. The {9-Clubs} turn brought a bet worth 5,500 by Giuseppe Iadisernia and Jason Koon was the only caller.

On the {9-Diamonds} river, Iadisernia bet another 20,000 and Koon jammed for around 60,000 to get snap-called. Iadisernia rolled over the {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} for aces full but Koon's {9-Hearts}{9-Spades} had made runner-runner quads for the double-up.

"That's as sick as it gets," Koon stated in table chat before heading into the break.
