Brian Green Wins First Bracelet of the 2019 World Series of Poker

The first bracelet of the 50th Annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) has been awarded!

Brian Green topped a field of 204 runners to win Event #2: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Super Turbo Bounty for $345,669 and his first gold bracelet. To do so he had to defeat his good friend – 2018 Global Poker Award winner for “Breakout Player of the Year”, Ali Imsirovic.

“It kind of gets the monkey off my back. Now I can play poker without having that on my mind,” Green said after the win. “I tend to do well when I play pro-heavy fields... I know most of the guys who play $10ks are pretty good players. In a turbo, though, there’s a lot of flipping too, not a lot of postflop poker. Still, a win’s a win, it’s hard to win a poker tournament.”

The win came three months after Green relocated from Texas to Las Vegas, a fact he credits for his early success.

“I’ve been coming out here for at least 100 days a year for probably 20 years and it gets expensive,” Green explained. “I figured why not buy a place and not have the pressure of having to pay for [hotel] rooms. Plus, now homecourt advantage, it looks like it’s working. Sleeping in my own bed and all that, I thought that might be an advantage this summer.”

Green, who started playing poker in 1984 after learning the game from his father, had more than $3 million in lifetime earnings prior to his victory, which included a career-high $1,117,923 for finishing fifth in the 2016 $111,111 High Roller for One Drop.

Last September, he finished runner-up to David Peters in the 2018 Poker Masters Event #1: $10,000 NLH for $138,000, and back in 2013 he won a circuit ring at the Harrah’s New Orleans stop in a $365 NLH Turbo.

Final Table Action

The final six players returned to action on Thursday in what was the first live stream of the 2019 WSOP. On just the ninth hand of play, six-time bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu moved all in from the button holding ace-ten and received a call from Loren Klein, who had queen-jack in the big blind. Klein turned a queen and that was all she wrote for Negreanu.

Ten hands later, Ping Liu followed him out the door, also courtesy of Klein. It happened when Liu jammed the small blind with jack-ten suited only to have Klein way up with ace-ten in the big blind. Liu actually flopped the nut king-high straight but a jack on the turn gave Klein Broadway and Liu took home $71,614 for his fifth-place finish.

Klein’s run came to an end in fourth place after he got it in preflop holding ace-nine against Asher Conniff’s ace-queen suited. Not long after, Conniff, who started the final table with the chip lead, lost with ace-nine to Brian Green’s king-queen all in preflop after a king appeared on the flop. That allowed Green to take a more than 2:1 chip lead into heads-up play against Ali Imsirovic.

The latter managed an early double to even the stacks, and then the duo played the final hand. Imsirovic got his stack all in preflop holding two red kings and was up against Green’s ace-nine offsuit. Imsirovic held through the nine-high flop after a brick on the turn, but another nine on the river sealed the deal for Green. Imsirovic, one of the hottest players in poker over the past couple of years, was denied his first bracelet but did take home $213,644 in prize money.

PokerNews coverage of the 2019 WSOP continues today with updates from both Event #1: Casino Employees Event and Event #3: $500 Big 50.

Hand #72: Brian Green shoved from the button having the slightly bigger stack and Ali Imsirovic called for his last 6,100,000.

Ali Imsirovic: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Brian Green: {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

The flop came {9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades} for Green to flop a pair but Imsirovic was still ahead.

The turn was the {4-Hearts} which didn't change anything.

The river, however, was the {9-Clubs} and Green's rail exploded as their man had trips. The stacks were counted again to make sure Green had more chips and once the dealer had confirmed that fact, they shook hands as Green claimed the first WSOP bracelet of 2019. Imsirovic finished in 2nd place for $213,644 which is his biggest WSOP cash to date.

Brian Green: {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

The flop came {9-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} for them both to flop a pair but put Green ahead with the higher one.

The turn was the {10-Clubs} which didn't change the situation.

"Nine!" Conniff's railed shouted but the river completed the board with the {8-Clubs} to seal the deal. Conniff departed the stage in third place for $145,097.

The players have taken a short break while the table is getting prepared for heads-up play.

The turn was the {4-Clubs} which didn't change the situation but the {10-Hearts} gave Imsirovic the Broadway to stay alive and double up.

Six Players Return for the First Final Table of the 50th Annual WSOP with Conniff in the Lead

Asher Conniff

At noon, it will be time for the first final table of the 50th Annual World Series of Poker here in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. Six players will be returning to the felt to battle it out for the win and the coveted gold WSOP bracelet in Event #2: $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty. The event attracted 204 entries in total, which created a prize pool of $1,305,600, meaning the winner will walk away with $345,669.

Asher Conniff will be back with a bit of a head start as he claimed the overnight chip lead with 4,125,000 in chips. Conniff already has a WSOP Circuit Ring which he won earlier this year here in Las Vegas but will be looking to add a bracelet to his collection after making his 34th WSOP cash in this event. A win would also be Conniff’s biggest WSOP cash to date and his second biggest in his career according to The Hendon Mob. This is the second time Conniff has arrived at the final table to battle it out for a bracelet. The last time was in 2015 in Berlin during the World Series of Europe when he finished in 9th place, but he's already improved on that run.

Trailing Conniff directly in the chip counts is Loren Klein with 3,130,000. Klein has won a bracelet during each year of the past three summers and will be trying to win his fourth in four consecutive years like Doyle Brunson and Bill Boyd did in the seventies. Klein’s previous bracelets were won playing Pot Limit Omaha with the bracelet he took home in 2016 being thanks to his mixed NLHE/PLO prowess. This event could see Klein claim his first NLHE bracelet and his third-biggest cash on the WSOP circuit.

Coming in in third place today is Ali Imsirovic who collected 2,180,000 on Day 1. Imsirovic and Conniff are no strangers to each other as they finished in first and second place earlier this year in the WSOP Circuit High Roller here in the Rio with Imsirovic claiming the title in the end. That victory was also the biggest WSOP cash of his career to date, but he has been on an amazing run already in the first half of the year. Imsirovic has notched six High Roller wins in 2019 alone and cashed for almost $1.4 million in total during the past five months.

Daniel Negreanu is off to a great start in his chase to become the 2019 Player of the Year as the newlywed bagged 1,015,000 overnight. The Canadian brings 13 big blinds to the table when the tournament restarts with almost seven minutes left in Level 27. 'Kid Poker' will be looking for a double-up early on, and this will also be the case for Ping Liu and Brian Green. While Negreanu might be the most experienced player on the table, Green is no stranger to success either. He already has a WSOP Circuit Ring and has reached 11 WSOP final tables. Liu is following him closely with nine final tables and 40 cashes.

All six players are guaranteed at least $52,099 but will all be looking to lay their claim on the first bracelet of the summer. When the players return at 12 noon local time, they will be playing blinds of 40,000/80,000 with a big blind ante of 80,000. The levels will continue to be 20-minutes long with a 20-minute break scheduled after every six levels.

The final table will be airing on CBS All Access for viewers in the USA, Canada, and Australia while the rest of the world can watch along on PokerGO from 1 PM local time according to their schedule. But for live updates, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to bring you the scoop right from the final table to your screens so stick around to see who will be crowned the first bracelet winner of 2019.
