Antonius One of the Bigger Stacks Coming into Day 2 of the Triton Super High Roller Montenegro Main Event

Patrik Antonius is returning as one of the larger stacks
Patrik Antonius is returning as one of the larger stacks

The penultimate day of the HK$1,000,000 Triton Super High Roller Series 2018 Montenegro Main Event is set to start at 1pm CET. So far 27 of the 39 Day 1 entrants are still in action at the dawn of Day 2, but with registration open until the end of level 11, at 5pm local time this figure could well increase.

The list of returning players reads like the who's who of the international High Roller poker scene. Big stacks and notables returning in the top 10 include Patrik Antonius (576,000), Mikita Badziakouski (569,000), Stephen Chidwick, ( 526,500), Julian Thomas (505,000), Dietrich Fast (451,500), Rui Cao (420,000) and Steffen Sontheimer (387,000).

However, the man returning with the chip lead is Malaysia's Wai Leong Chan who enjoyed a great day at the tables on the opening flight, winning the majority of his chips from Koray Aldermir to return with a stack of 778,500.

Aldemir is still in the running however, after re-entering and will be coming back with a stack of 336,000. Defending champion Manig Loeser will be returning with a stack of 264,000. Bryn Kenney is coming back with 247,000, while Phil Ivey made it through to Day 2 with 186,500.

Among those to bust and not re-enter just yet are 6-Max champion Richard Yong, Romain Arnaud, Gabe Patgorski, Mikhail Smirnov and Dan "Jungleman" Cates.

Both Yong and Cates are expected to re-enter the competition on Day 2. Since Day 1 was shortened by two levels, the registration period upon restart remains open for the first four levels and break.

The penultimate tournament day is scheduled to play down to the final table and the action recommences at level eight with blinds of 2,500/5,000 and a running ante of 500, giving all new additions to the field 50 big blinds when the cards get back in the air.

As usual, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to bring you all the action as it happens so watch this space as we see who’s got what it takes to successfully traverse the road to the final table.

Set-Over-Set Debacle for O'Dwyer

The completed board showed {7-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{3-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and there were some 120,000 in the middle. Patrik Antonius checked out of the big blind and Steve O'Dwyer bet 75,000 with 124,000 behind. Antonius check-raised to 300,000 and O'Dwyer looked over to him to get any kind of reaction.

His shot clock ran down to one second and O'Dwyer called, then saw Antonius turn over {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} for a set of nines. O'Dwyer mucked his {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} for an inferior turned set of treys and left the table with a dry smile on the face.

Triton’s Top Dogs

Nível 9 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Fedor Holz is the Triton Super High Roller Series most successful player
Fedor Holz is the Triton Super High Roller Series most successful player

With the prestigious Triton Super High Roller Series attracting an eclectic mixture of affluent recreational players and some of the international poker circuit’s top pros, a great deal of cold, hard cash has changed hands over the Series’ short history.

With the smallest side event buy-in coming in at HKD 250,000 (~$31,850), the Main Events boasting an HKD 1-million entry (~$127,385) and the tournament formats offering either single or unlimited re-entries, the Triton Super High Roller prize pools are just that – super high.

Since its inception in 2015, the Triton Super High Roller Series has awarded a massive $48.6 million in prize money over 12 high-stakes tournaments (as of May 16, 2018).

The Triton Series has plenty of regular players, all of whom are fans of the format, the excellent event structures, and the luxurious tournament locations. Several of these players also return because they have enjoyed a great deal of success at the tables, so let's see who are the Triton Super High Roller top dogs:

Germany's Fedor Holz tops the Triton Super High Roller Series in terms of money won, having made an impressive $5,617,727 at the Series' tournament tables. Holz closest rival, in terms of money won, is poker stalwart John Juanda, who has $4,050,233 in tournament winnings, over three cashes, just like Holz.

When it comes to the number of cashes is Wai Kin Yong who is ahead of Holz but is tied with Spain's Sergio Aido, with both having four on their resume.

There are with eleven players tied on three cashes with Holz, Juanda, the USA's David Peters, Germany's Manig Loeser, Triton founder Richard Yong, Daniel "jungleman12" Cates, the USA's Steve O'Dwyer, Macau's Paul Phua, Hong Kong's Winfred Yu, Malaysia's Chan Wai Leong and the USA's Isaac Haxton all on the level.

Of these, it is Juanda who has won the most in cash, with the US pro also holding the title for the 2017 Triton Super High Roller Macau Main Event - the largest and richest event of the series to date.

A massive three-way all in was brewing over on the feature table with Winfred Yu and Phil Ivey all in and at risk. Yu had jammed the cutoff with 137,000 and Ivey moved all in over the top for 300,000 on the button. They were called by Bryn Kenney in the big blind and all three players turned over a pocket pair.

Phil Ivey: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}

The board came {A-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} and Kenney scored the double knockout to jump up to more than a million in chips.

Kenney Takes Two

Bryn Kenney - Dietrich Fast
Bryn Kenney - Dietrich Fast

An absolutely huge hand has gone down over on the feature table that cost both Paul Phua and Wai Kin Yong their tournament lives and saw Bryn Kenney shoot up near the top of the chip counts.

It was Kenney who was the instigator of all the carnage, opening the action to from the hi-jack 22,000, Phua flat called from the small blind and Wai Kin Yong moved all-in from the big blind for 266,000.

The action was back on Kenney, who re-shoved for 637,000 and as one of the shorter stacks with 166,000, Phua decided he was getting a good price to take a gamble and made the call also.

Bryn Kenney: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}
Wai Kin Yong: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Paul Phua: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

The board ran out {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{7-Spades} to give Kenney the monster pot and shoot him up to 1,076,000, while both Phua and Yong headed to the registration area to buy back in.

Sun Busts Antonius in Two Hands

Nível 11 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Patrik Antonius

A flopped set of nines was not good enough for Patrik Antonius, as Yaqi Sun turned a flush with the {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} on a board of {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}.

Just one hand later, Antonius was all in for 19,000 and Sun reraised to 30,000 to force out everyone else.

Patrik Antonius: {8-Hearts}{6-Clubs}
Yaqi Sun: {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

The board came {K-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{A-Spades} and that was it for the Finn for now, but he can still re-enter until the start of the next level.

Yewei Wu got his stack in with the {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and Marius Torbergsen looked him up with the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} to see the board run out {Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

Last but not least, Peter Jetten busted to Jason Koon, re-entered and was re-seated right next to his previous nemesis.

Phua had another 200,000 behind and called it off.

Patrik Antonius Talks Short Deck Poker and Plans for the WSOP

Nível 12 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Patrik Antonius, the most successful player in online history
Patrik Antonius, the most successful player in online history

Finnish poker superstar Patrik Antonius has returned to the live scene with a bang in 2018, following a few years of quiet time. Antonius is currently enjoying the best year of his professional career, and being as he has results dating back to 2003 on his poker resume, that is quite some achievement.

Finland’s most successful tournament player has already made five final tables this year, all of them coming in big buy-in events, and Antonius has won over $4.5 million in 2018 already, and it’s only May.

The former professional tennis player and coach is already the most successful player in the history of online poker, at least from a cash game perspective, up over $17-million in online cash games over 645,583 tracked hands (according to HighStakesDB). Antonius has over $6-million more than next closest rival Ben “Bttech86” Tollerene.

The Finn started the year like an Olympic sprinter coming out of the blocks, taking down the €25,500 PartyPoker Millions Super High Roller in Rozvadov in February, beating Brazil’s Joao Simao heads-up to win his eighth title and claim the $520,610 first prize.

Antonius followed that up with a final table finish in the HK$400,000 Super High Roller APPT Macau, coming in 6th for $204,378. Two days later Antonius made the majority of his 2018 profits with a runner-up finish in the HK$2-million Super High Roller Bowl, also in Macau, narrowly losing out to Justin Bonomo and taking home $3.15-million.

A third-place finish in the €51,000 Party Poker Millions Super High Roller Barcelona was good for a further $491,117 a little over two weeks later in early April, which Antonius followed up with another 6th place finish, this time on home turf in the €5,300 APT Monte Carlo Main Event for $168,280.

That brings Antonius’ total live tournament winnings up to over $11.3 million, which sees him reclaim the top spot on the Finland All Time Money List from Juha Helppi.

The Finn is making his Triton Super High Roller Series debut and will be looking to add to his already impressive tournament tally, but took some time to talk to PokerNews about his impressions of the Series, Short Deck Ante Only Poker and his plans for the upcoming WSOP.

“I would like to see more big events in Asia, that I would go and travel for it. Just for me, I would like to have a little bit bigger events, like a $10,000 buy-in is not big enough for me to travel that far, but I’m always happy to go to Macau or Manila or Korea or here [Montenegro] or just anywhere you know, for the big events. I enjoy traveling and playing in these events so I’m very happy and Triton is doing a good job from what I hear and from what I see,” said Antonius when asked about the Triton Series.

Antonius missed the opening Short Deck Ante Only Event that Phil Ivey took down for his first tournament cash since 2016, but is keen to try out this exciting new poker variant.

“Things are always changing, there’s always little adjustments to the rules and with the games,” said Antonius.

“No Limit Hold’em has been the dominating game, and it’s still my favorite tournament game, and I think that it’s going to stay there, but I think that this game is here to stay.”

I’ve never played one hand but I’ve watched on TV, it’s a very interesting game and I think that it has big potential. I would like to play this game more, and I want to start playing now so I’m looking forward [to playing].”

Ben Wilson interviews Patrik Antonius
Patrik Antonius talks Short Deck Ante Only poker

Antonius has been as successful as he has because he still has a keen interest in the game, and learns quickly when it comes to new games and strategies.

“Well, there are always people who have been inventing new games, a lot of different versions of different games; limit games, all kinds of pot limit games and so on. I think that this game has the most potential because it’s like Hold’em, there are two cards and there’s a lot of bluffing,” said Antonius.

“I’m not a fan of those games where you can take it very far with just having a strong strategy. Like in certain limit games or draw games and so on you can only take it to certain levels… but this game there is going to be so many different boards and different variations.”

“You play based on the player, how they are playing, you know you’re going to be able to bluff with blockers no draws just to see a good opportunity to steal it.”

So keen is Antonius’ knowledge of this new variant, you’d never guess he has yet to play it.

“I haven’t studied the game too much, I only watched it one time on TV, but I already have my opinions on it. The hand values seem to be closer so Aces are not so big a deal as in a full deck, you can crack them easier with nine-ten suited, and maybe the top set is not going to be such a massive deal in this game. So far I like this game so we’ll see.”

With the Triton Super High Roller Series concluding with a HKD 1-million buy-in Short Deck Ante Only tournament scheduled to start on 17 May, just as the Main Event is winding down, the Finn will have his chance at testing his skills at some of the game’s best, quite a few of whom already have some experience at playing it.

Should it not work out for him, there’s always the upcoming World Series, where a man running as hot as he is this year must fancy his chances.

“So far I don’t have very big plans for the World Series, I’m a little bit busy in June when it comes to other work. I might play the Main Event, at least when it comes to tournaments, just don’t expect to see me in other events than the Main Event because I still have a little issue with taxes when it comes to the States. I don’t see it as so profitable in that sense so… but yeah, most likely I’ll go for a couple of week,” said Antonius when asked about his plans.

On one of the two outer tables, Phil Ivey open-shoved from the cutoff for around 230,000 and Steffen Sontheimer snap-called in the big blind.

Phil Ivey: {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}
Steffen Sontheimer: {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}

The {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{J-Spades} flop gave Sontheimer top set while Ivey had a gutshot straight draw. Once the {J-Diamonds} fell on the turn, Ivey was left with just one out, the last jack in the deck, and the miracle never came with a blank {7-Hearts} on the river.
