No Mercy From Mercier

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

The pot had about 10,000 in it on a board reading {q-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. The player in the hijack led out for 3,400 and Mercier called.

The turn was the {5-Spades}. The hijack led out again, this time for 5,200. Mercier thought about it for a moment and after taking a look at his opponent's stack decided to call again.

The river was the {9-Hearts}. The hijack immediately moved all in for 9,200 and Mercier snap-called, tabling {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} for a full house, fours full of fives. His opponent flashed {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for two pair, queens and fives before sending them into the muck on his way to the rail.

Nick Petrangelo Leaves His Opponent Gutted

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

On a board reading {k-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}, the big blind led out for 2,000 and Nick Petrangelo called from the cutoff.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and the big blind led out for 7,000 this time. Petrangelo called again.

The river was the {6-Spades}. The big blind led out for a third time and bet 10,000. Petrangelo raised enough to put his opponent to the test for his remaining 18,000 in chips. He called and Petrangelo tabled {q-Spades}{j-Clubs} for the nuts and his opponent showed {k-Spades}{9-Hearts} for two pair, sending his cards into the muck on his way out.

Ivan Luca Busts to Daniel Colman

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Ivan Luca
Ivan Luca

Ivan Luca was down to 2,000 but tripled before he eventually went down anyway. He got lucky hitting a full house with {Q-}{8-} to get back some breathing room, but would fall the next hand.

Luca raised to 4,000 under the gun, leaving himself 2,200 behind. Daniel Colman three-bet to 7,200 from the cutoff and the button and both blinds quickly released. Luca commited his chips just as fast.

Ivan Luca: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Daniel Colman: {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

The {J-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop already had one table mate say "Oh oh!", and the {3-Clubs} followed soon after to make things official for Luca. He was out, the {6-Spades} on the river did nothing for him.

Carrel Exits; Haxton and Koon Enter

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Charlie Carrel, who just a couple hours ago finished runner-up in the $100K Super High Roller, was eliminated from the Main Event in unknown action. While Carrel was lost, he was replaced by the man who beat him earlier, Jason Koon. Also joining the field in the last level of the night is Isaac Haxton.

Peters Put to the Test

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
David Peters
David Peters

David Peters may be the Global Poker Index number one from 2016, but it is a brand new year and his number one spot is there to be taken by anyone. Cristian-Andrei Folescu and Peters were already at the turn of what was clearly a big pot by the time we arrived to see the board showing {J-Spades}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}.

When the 28,000 in the pot was added to by a sensational all-in to the tune of 75,200 by Folescu, Peters was put to the ultimate test - his entire remaining stack of 55,000. What would be a chip-leading pot if Peters called turned out not to be, as the American let the hand go, but that gives Folescu around 100,000 going into the final level of the day.

Andrey Zaichenko Shoves Into Pocket Rockets

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Canada's James Martyn raised to 1,400 from the cutoff only to have Andrey Zaichenko three-bet to 4,500 from the button. The blinds both folded and Martyn pushed back with a four-bet to 13,500. Not to be outdone, Zaichenko five-bet all in. He soon regretted it as Martyn snap-called off for 46,500 total.

Zaichenko: {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Martyn: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

The {8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{10-Clubs} flop paired Zaichenko, but he needed either another ten or a king to eliminate his opponent. That didn't happen though as instead the {6-Spades} blanked on the turn followed by the {5-Diamonds} on the river.

Nick Petrangelo Calls to Put Ayan Kuchukov at Risk

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Nick Petrangelo raised to 1,500 from middle position and Kazakhstan's Ayan Kuchukov three-bet all in for just 5,100 from the hijack. Action folded back to Petraneglo, and he wasted little time in making the call.

Petrangelo: {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Kuchukov: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}

Kuchukov was ahead, but not after the flop came down {4-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs} to pair Petrangelo. Fortunately for Kuchukov, the {K-Hearts} spiked on the turn to give him back the lead. The {9-Hearts} river was safe for Kuchukov, and he shipped the double.

Despite losing that pot, Petrangelo is up considerably from the last time we check in on him.

Shak Departs

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

We've lost some big names late on here, and there aren't too many bigger than Dan Shak. The master of several High Roller tournaments, who often gravitates towards the bigger buy-in, will have another chance at a big win tomorrow but won't be going any further in the $5,300 Main Event.

Elsewhere on Day 1a, Charlie Carrel has been up and down since finishing second in the $100,000 Super High Roller tournament, but he is currently a little down from his starting stack on around 25,000.

Finally, Finland's Jorma Nuutinen got the better of Corey Hochman in a three-bet pot where the Finn was the preflop aggressor. Hochman called from 1500 to 4,600 to see a flop of {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} but couldn't continue when Nuutinen c-bet 3600. With 45,0000, Nuutinen looks to be building momentum ahead of the final level of the night.
