Iraj Parvizi Leads After Day 1 of Event #59: $2,500 Big Bet Mix

Day 1 of Event # 59: $2,500 Big Big Mix is at its end. Leading the way is Iraj Parvizi, who was able to over take Daniel Negreanu for the chip lead late in the evening. He and Negreanu swapped back and forth as the leader for the last few levels of the night, but eventually it was Parvizi who walked away as the end of day chip leader. Parvizi is looking to make his first World Series of Poker cash Saturday and with just a few place to go until the money bubble, he just might make it.

Negreanu also held the chip lead at multiple points on Day 1. Late into the last level Negreanu knocked out a player when his two pair turned into a full house and the player called his river shove. This put Negreanu close to the top, but Parvizi was the one who walked away as the chip leader.

Along with Negreanu are plenty of other big names who will return for Day 2 of the Big Bet Mix, including Jerry Wong (98,275), David “ODB” Baker (130,200), Jason Mercier (43,250), Calvin Anderson (94,250), Mike Matusow (40,875), Ryan Hughes (126,025), and Brandon Cantu (75,300). All of these players are looking to make it into the top 30, as that is where the money bubble will be popped.

While a slew of big names made it through day 1, there were also a slough of big names who didn’t survive. One such example is Phil Hellmuth who was eliminated within a half hour of his registration by Robert Mizrachi. Mizrachi followed Hellmuth out the door when he and David “ODB” Baker played a giant pot, giving Baker the chip lead for a little while midway through the day. Along with these two, some other who didn’t make it through the day were Dan Smith, Dario Sammartino, Layne Flack, Chance Kornuth, Ryan Riess, Frank Kassela and Dan Shak, just to name a few.

The 197 players who entered the event created a prizepool of $443,250 and a first place prize of $112,232. A mincash in this event is worth $3,750 while making an appearance at the six-handed final table will bring home at least $16,793.

The final 37 players will return at 2 p.m. PDT Saturday in the Brasilia Room where they will begin just seven places away from the money. Negreanu Gets a Big Knockout to Close in on the Chip Lead

Daniel Negreanu opened from the cutoff with a raise to 2,500. He was called by one player on the button and Ian O'Hara in the big blind.

The flop came and O'Hara checked to Negreanu who put out a bet of 4,000. The player on the button called but O'Hara folded.

On the turn, Negreanu led out again, this time with a bet of 9,000. The button player called once more.

The river was the and Negreanu moved all in with a covering stack. This put the player in the button into the tank. He had close to 26,000 behind.

"Did I play the mixed tournament to bust in hold'em?" he asked himself. "Probably."

He then started to stare at Negreanu. "If I stare at you long enough, maybe you'll just give it away," he said. "I'm probably calling here, just give me a couple minutes to think about this guys."

While this was happening Negreanu just sat silently with a hand covering his mouth.

Eventually the player put in the chips to call. Negreanu immediately turned up for a flopped two pair that turned into a whole house.

The player tapped the table. "Alright, i'd like to go back to my old table with all the chips I just had," he said. He wished everyone luck and headed to the rail as Negreanu collected the chips and moved close to the chip leader spot at the end of the night.

Nobody Knows What They Are Supposed To Do

Calvin Anderson had moved one opponent all in before the draw and the player called.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do here," the player said, eventually throwing away two cards.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do here," Anderson said as well. He revealed then started laughing. "I mean I guess I'm supposed to go for the flush because I have more outs."

Eventually he decided to pitch in his . His opponent showed . They decided that Anderson would show his draw first. He revealed a and that was it for the hand as Anderson didn't improve.

"He has the nuts over there anyways," Matusow said as the player showed for trips.

"I don't know if you're supposed to go with tens there," Anderson said. "I mean against a normal player. Against me it's fine but not against a normal person."

Anderson was forced to cut out 6,275 and send it over to his opponent.

A player in middle position opened to 1,400. Daniel Negreanu three-bet to 4,700 and James Obst four-bet all in for 11,250. The original raiser folded and Negreanu called.

"I think I might be live," said Negreanu.

Simao's opponent stood pat for a third time and Simao smiled, agonizing over his decision before eventually deciding to draw one.

His opponent showed and Simao looked semi-relieved showing having said he had thrown away a .

Calvin Anderson Came Here to Play Hold'em

There was already 6,800 in the pot when we approached the table. A flop of was laid out before Calvin Anderson and one other player. Anderson had checked over to his opponent and a bet of 10,000 was out in front of him. Anderson had moved all-in with a covering stack and his opponent was in the tank.

As he thought Anderson started talking.

"You got a flush draw?" he asked. "How big is your flush draw?"

Anderson smiled as he started talking.

"Nines?" he asked. "Tens? Ace eight? Six seven of spades?"

Anderson then shook his head. "Nah, you don't have any of those hands."

Anderson studied his opponent as he flicked chips back and forth in his hands, then smiled again. "You probably shouldn't have gotten involved in this game," Anderson said. "You came here for the mix right? You're probably better at the other games.

"Not many people come for hold'em," he continued. "I'm one of those guys though."

While Anderson was talking another player at the table called the clock. The floor came and started coutning down the clock and the player folded before his time expired.

"What happened preflop," Anthony Zinno asked from across the table. "I missed that whole thing."

"I raised and he three bet," Anderson said.

With that, Anderson took down the pot and showed his prowess for the game of No-Limit Hold'em.

We caught up to Ryan Riess and Ismael Bojang in the midst of a hand. Both players had already taken their first draw and Riess had put most of his stack in the middle of the table already. He only had 250 behind. Both players took one. Bojang checked. Ries moved all in for 250 and Bojand called.

Both players took one again on the last draw then tabled their hands.

"Eight or three," Bojang asked the dealer.

"You show first so I know what I have to beat," Riess asked. Both wishes were granted when Bojang turned up the , making his low.

Phil Hellmuth just recently entered the tournament, and now he's gone. We caught Robert Mizrachi scooping up Hellmuth's chips so we asked him what happened.

Mizrachi said that he limped in from the small blind and Hellmuth checked from the big blind. Both players drew three and Mizrachi bet and Hellmuth called.

Mizrachi then drew two and Hellmuth took one. Mizrachi said he was holding and made a wheel. He checked to Hellmuth. Hellmuth bet 1,500 and Mizrachi made it 3,000. Hellmuth called.

Mizrachi stood pat and Hellmuth threw away one card, revealing a . Mizrachi checked. Hellmuth bet 4,900, leaving himself with 3,100 behind. Mizrachi then check-raised Hellmuth all in. Hellmuth thought about it for a long time according to David "ODB" Baker and Mizrachi, but eventually decided to call, not wanting to be left with a short stack. Mizrachi turned over his wheel and Hellmuth had for the number four.

That would do it for Hellmuth who lasted less than a level in this tournament.

"He doesn't really dodge bullets that well," Mizrachi said after the hand. "I can't believe he was thinking about folding."

Todd Brunson "Owns" Mike Matusow

Mike Matusow raised to 800 from under the gun. Action folded around and Todd Brunson called from the big blind. Brunson took three while Matusow took one.

Brunson then checked it over to Matusow and Matusow bet 1,400. Brunson thought for about a minute, then called.

"Ace high," Matusow said.

Brunson showed for a pair of kings and Matusow mucked his hand.

"Every other time I've raised I've had two pair or trips," Matusow said after the hand. "Todd Brunson says, 'No, you know what? He's got a four flush this time.' Calls, and he's right."

Brunson very quietly took in the pot as Matusow jokingly flipped Brunson the bird.

"What was your story again?" Brunson asked after the hand.

"Make sure you write 'Todd Brunson Owns Mike Matusow,'" Matusow said after the hand. "He's been owning me for 20 years, why would he stop now?"
