Ivey Second in Chips After Day 1 in Event #43: $50,000 Poker Players Championship

The first day of one of the most anticipated events of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) wrapped up early Monday morning in the form of Event #43: $50,000 Poker Players Championship, a prestigious mixed game tournament that never fails to bring in poker's best and brightest.

One of the brightest of them all, ten-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey, who yesterday bubbled the $250,000 Super High Roller, ended the day second in chips with 944,500 among the 54 remaining players in no small part thanks to a massive call he made in a pot-limit Omaha hand against 2013 PPC champion Matthew Ashton. The only player to bag more chips than Ivey was Josh Arieh (1,088,000), who is looking for his second bracelet of the summer as he continues to pad his Poker Hall of Fame resume.

Two-time defending champion Dan "Jungleman" Cates, who showed up at the start of Day 1 in full costume and makeup dressed as the Terminator, came close to bowing out early but managed to bounce back to continue his quest for a historic three-peat.

Also among the 73 runners on Day 1 of the single-entry event were recent bracelet winners David "ODB" Baker, Shaun Deeb and John Monnette.

Other bracelet winners like Scott Seiver, Jeremy Ausmus, Julien Martini, Joe Cassidy and Christopher Vitch and Jennifer Harman, who PokerNews spoke to earlier in the series, are also chasing another, while the likes of Viktor Blom, Jared Bleznick and Alexander Wilkinson are all after a first piece of WSOP hardware.

Day 1 Action

All eyes were on Cates as he made his dramatic Terminator cosplay entrance and spoke in short monotone utterances, a bit he maintained throughout the day to the amusement of players including Negreanu, who filmed the spectacle for his vlog viewers.

The Terminator's time in the Paris ballroom was almost short-lived as he took a hit from Scott Seiver in the first level of play before losing even more in the coming levels. Without breaking character, Cates was able to climb back and will return to continue his historic run on Day 2, perhaps in a new Terminator-themed get-up.

Not everyone was as lucky as Cates. Five-time bracelet winner Eli Elezra was the first elimination of the day, and fellow Poker Hall of Famers Negreanu and John Hennigan also fell. Other players who weren't fortunate enough to bag include Yuval Bronshtein, Ralph Perry, Tamon Nakamura, Michael Rodrigues and recent bracelet winners Ben Lamb, Nick Schulman and "best Badeucey player in the world" Chad Eveslage.

One of the biggest stories of the day was the appearance of Chris Moneymaker 20 years after his 2003 Main Event victory that ignited the Poker Boom. It's the Poker Hall of Famer's first time playing the PPC as he looks for his tenth cash since winning $2.5 million two decades ago in the Main Event.

Many of the younger players in the field grew up in the shadow of Moneymaker, and some of them voiced their gratitude for the perfectly named poker superstar. Toward the end of the evening, Philip Sternheimer told the table about a time Moneymaker bluffed him in a celebrity game shortly after his 2003 victory.

"That was the best moment of my life at the time," reflected Sternheimer. "And here we are 19 years later."

Day 2 action will resume at 1:00 p.m. local time on June 19 on Level 7. Plenty of players are still likely to join the field with late registration open for three levels on Day 2, so expect to see plenty more stars at the tables.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team will be back on-site tomorrow here at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas ahead of the crowning of the next PPC champion.

Arieh Eliminates Sternheimer

After Philip Sternheimer raised to 7,500 in the cutoff and got called by Brian Yoon on the button, Josh Arieh three-bet to 26,000 in the big blind.

Sternheimer then moved all in for 160,000 and after Yoon folded and Arieh though for a minute or so, he made the call to put Sternheimer at risk.

Philip Sternheimer: QQ
Josh Arieh: A10

The board came 322A9, pairing Arieh's ace on the turn to eliminate Sternheimer, who frustratedly knocked over his chair as he left the tournament area.

With the win, Arieh may have taken the chip lead from Phil Ivey just before the end of Day 1.

Picking action up on a flop of QKA, Phil Ivey checked in the big blind to Dan Cates under the gun to his immediate left.

Ivey called and the dealer dropped the 8 on the turn. Ivey check-called another bet, and the 4 came on the river.

Ivey check-called one more bet and Cates robotically declared "bullets," showing AAK8 for top set, while Ivey showed KQ76 for a low to chop up the pot.

Ivey Scores Massive Double-Up Through Ashton

Nível 5
Phil Ivey

Pot-Limit Omaha

Phil Ivey has rocketed to the top of the chip counts after the largest pot of the day was sent his direction.

After Greg Mueller raised to 6,500 in the cutoff and Matthew Ashton called in the small blind, Ivey three-bet to 26,000 in the big blind. Both Mueller and Ashton called, and a big pot that would get a lot bigger was brewing.

The flop came Q39 and Ashton led out for 32,000. Ivey took some time to think and then made the call. Action was on Mueller now and he also called, leaving himself 64,000 behind.

The turn came 4 and after about a minute of thought, Ashton bet the pot, sliding out a stack of green T-25,000 chips that totaled 275,000.

Ivey then went into the tank, covering his mouth as he thought through his decision for over two minutes, then cutting out his chips and sliding them all forward to the tune of 347,000.

Mueller then went into the tank for about a minute before deciding to fold and preserve his remaining stack.

Ashton dropped a call in and the hands were revealed that would either double up or eliminate Ivey.

Phil Ivey: AKQJ
Matthew Ashton: AK22

Ashton's aggression with his flush draw and wheel draw had been picked off by Ivey's pair of queens and straight draw.

The river brought the 10, giving Ivey his straight to win the massive pot and send him to the top of the leaderboard.

In a heads-up pot between Dan Cates in the small blind and Josh Arieh on the button, Cates bet all in for 54,500 on the 593 flop and Arieh called with a bigger stack.

Dan Cates: AA109
Josh Arieh: A973

Arieh was ahead with two pair until the board ran out 1010 to improve Cates to a full house to double through the recent five-time bracelet winner.

"Terminated," Cates said quietly as he won the pot.

Blind Versus Blind Carnage in the Big Bet Streets

Nível 3
Julien Martini
Julien Martini

No Limit Hold 'em

Action folded all the way to Julien Martini in the small blind who flat called for 2,000. Jeremy Ausmus was in the big blind and put in the raise to 8,000. Without thinking for too long, Martini put in the back-three-bet to 37,000. Ausmus got an idea of his count and made the call.

The 56J flop hit the felt and Martini down-bet 24,000. Ausmus again made the call in-position.

The turn brought a 9 and Martini went into the tank for a moment before putting out a hefty bet to the tune of 75,000. Ausmus then thought it over, did some accounting of his stack, and leaned over and looked at Martini's. Eventually after about two minutes in the tank he announced "All in". Martini snapped.

The cards hit their back.

Julien Martini: JJ
Jeremy Ausmus: KQ

Ausmus turned a gutter to go with his flush draw and two overs. Martini was sitting pretty with his top set while waiting on the river. It landed the K and although Ausmus hit top pair it wouldn't save him from a crippled stack going into the middle levels of day one.

No Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Action folded to Brian Rast in middle position who opened to 5,500. Phil Ivey called on the button and Renan Bruschi defended his big blind.

Bruschi drew two, Rast drew one, and Ivey drew two.

Bruschi checked his action over to Rast who thought for a full minute before going full-pot to 17,000. Ivey appeared suspicious as he went into the tank and eventually flicked in the chips. Bruschi quickly got out of the way.

"Nine." Rast said as he rolled over 98654. Ivey tossed his hand into the muck and Rast took it down.

Monnette Puts in the Rare Double Check-Raise

Nível 2
John Monnette

Omaha Hi-Lo

Action folded to Joao Vieira in middle position who opened to 6,000. Everyone folded except John Monnette who defended his big blind.

The 443 flop landed and Monnette started with a check. Vieira put out a bet and Monnette quickly check-raised to 12,000. Vieira made the call.

The 6 turn landed and Monnette slowed down and checked. Vieira pounced and put out a bet, only to fall right into the trap of Monnette who put in the rare double check-raise. Vieira wasn't finished with the hand yet and made the call.

The Q river hit the felt and the action went bet call.

"Ace-deuce-four" Said Monnette as he tabled his full hand A429.

Vieira rolled over A2K6 and would get quartered in a very interesting hand.
