Obst Leads Final 32, Defending Champ Cates Terminated in Poker Players Championship

Nível 12
James Obst
James Obst

Following six more levels of high-stakes and high-quality mixed game poker, James Obst will take the chip lead into Day 3 of the World Series of Poker $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

Obst, who took time away from poker to pursue a career in tennis but has made a triumphant return to the WSOP, will bring 2,972,000 chips into Day 3, leading the final 32 players who bagged at night’s end.

Just behind Obst is Daniel Alaei, who entered at the start of Day 2 and amassed 2,064,000 chips, while Phil Ivey bagged the third largest stack of 1,655,000, and Day 1 chip leader Josh Arieh sits not far behind them in sixth with 1,365,000 chips.

A total of 73 players started the day with 26 more entering through three levels and the dinner break, before registration closed at about 7:40 p.m. local time. The 99 total players created a final prize pool of $4,727,250 that will see 15 get paid at least $84,255, with the winner receiving $1,324,747, a WSOP gold bracelet, and the grandest prize in all of mixed games, the Chip Reese Memorial trophy.

One player who won’t be back Tuesday is defending champion Dan Cates, who battled back from taking a severe hit from Obst at the end of Level 10, but eventually fell for good midway through the final level of the day versus Alaei, who made a wheel against him in Limit 2-7 Triple Draw.

Among others that busted throughout the day were former WSOP Player of the Year recipients Daniel Zack and Shaun Deeb. Hall of Famer Chris Moneymaker’s first foray into the PPC ended on Day 2, as did fellow Hall of Famer Jen Harman.

A litany of multi-time bracelet winners also fell including Brian Yoon, Anthony Zinno, David "ODB" Baker, and Julien Martini.

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Headlining some of the other players who will return for Day 3 is Phil Hellmuth, who had a rollercoaster day after entering at the start of Level 9.

Early in his day, he was on the wrong end of what he called the “greatest call anyone’s made against him all summer” by Ben Yu, but after a few swings along the way, the 16-time bracelet winner ended the night in the middle of the pack with 933,000 chips.

Plenty more big names will be joining Hellmuth in the quest to build up their stack on Day 3 including former PPC champions Matthew Ashton (1,068,000) and Elior Sion (934,000), along with 2021 WSOP Main Event Champion Koray Aldemir who battled back from a very short stack to bag 645,000.

The final 32 players will return to the Horseshoe Event Center at 1 p.m. local time on June 20 to play six more levels, which will likely take them into the money.

Stay with PokerNews for our continued coverage from the tournament floor as the Poker Players Championship rolls on toward crowning a champion here at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

"I'll Be Back"; Cates Tournament Life Terminated

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

After Daniel Alaei raised in the hijack, a short-stacked Dan Cates put in a three-bet on the button, then reached for his phone and began playing the theme song from "The Terminator".

Action returned to Alaei who called and then drew two, while Cates stood pat. Alaei still bet and Cates put his final bet in the middle.

Alaei still drew two on the second draw while Cates remained pat. On the final draw however, Alaei patted his hand, which sent the defending champion "Tournamen-ator" into the tank for a couple of minutes, while the dramatic theme music accompanied his imminent decision.

Cates opted to break his hand and draw one but it wouldn't matter. Alaei showed 7x5x4x3x2x for a wheel to eliminate Cates who of course uttered the famous parting words, "I'll be back" as he left the tournament floor.

Scott Seiver had completed but folded when Hal Rotholz raised and Phil Hellmuth made it three bets, while Rotholz stuck around. Hellmuth then bet his lead from fourth to sixth street before he opted to check seventh street. Rotholz checked behind and Hellmuth announced a number two, turning over the 4x3xAx to win the pot.

One table over, Dan Cates earned a double for 48,000 in a Stud Hi-Lo hand against Freddy Deeb when his pair of eights was good enough against an inferior pair and missed low draw.

No Final Table Repeat for Dzivielevski

Yuri Dzivielevski
Yuri Dzivielevski

No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Last year's runner-up Yuri Dzivielevski has been eliminated at the hands of Daniel Alaei.

After a raise from Yuri Dzivielevski in the cutoff, Daniel Alaei three-bet to 75,000 out of the small blind. Dzivielevski thought for a bit and then moved all in for 323,000.

Alaei thought briefly as well and then made the call. Each player drew one and revealed what they were drawing to.

Yuri Dzivielevski: 9x7x6x2x/Xx
Daniel Alaei: 8x5x3x2x/Xx

Alaei was first to reveal his draw, peeling a 9x, meaning that Dzivielevski needed a five, four, or three to survive.

Instead he peeled a Jx, ending his day, while sending a pot to Alaei that puts him amidst the chip leaders.

Deeb Chips Up; Cates Short Once More

Nível 12

Limit Hold'em

Cary Katz couldn't get rid of Daniel Alaei when they checked down eventually on the 99347 river. Katz exposed his AK but Alaei had that beat with the A3, after which Katz joked "you own me".

Dan Cates then raised from under the gun and received three callers in Freddy Deeb out of the hijack, Katz on the button and James Obst in the big blind. The K92 flop was checked to Cates and he bet. Deeb raised and Katz made it three bets to force out Obst and Cates, while Deeb stuck around.

The 8 turn was checked and Deeb's bet was barely moved forward when Katz snap-folded the QJ face-up.

Alaei then raised on the button for Cates to defend the big blind but the defending champion quickly heck-folded the KQ4 flop to a continuation bet.

While Cates was left short, Michael Noori ran out of chips on an adjacent table to reduce the field to the last 39 contenders.

Scott Seiver raked in a pot against Paul Volpe when his bet on seventh street was reluctantly called, as he exposed the AQ10 for queens and treys.

Scott Seiver: XxXx / 45A9 / Xx
Phil Hellmuth: XxXx / 10K36 / Xx

One hand later, Phil Hellmuth completed and Seiver raised for Hellmuth to call. They checked fourth street before Seiver bet all three further streets with Hellmuth coming along.

"Obvious three queens in the hole," Seiver stated and rolled over the QQQ for a set with a grin on the face.

The entire table was holding their breath as to what Hellmuth would say in table chat and one word fell, to which Seiver replied with a very dry "queens are usually mothers and they do fuck you".

Both continued their verbal tussle with Hellmuth claiming that Seiver "likes to give him chips".

A Chop for the Ages

Matt Glantz

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

PokerNews caught up with Matt Glantz who recounted a wild hand that, he said, he and his tablemates had "never seen happen before".

The action folded all the way to Glantz in the small blind who raised and Stephen Chidwick called in the big blind.

Glantz drew two and Chidwick drew three. After the first draw, five bets made their way into the middle before the players made their way to a second round of draws. They both stood pat.

Action was capped again and the cards hit their back with Chidwick all in.

Matt Glantz: 7x5x4x3x2x
Stephen Chidwick: 7x5x4x3x2x

The players both held the wheel and would chop it up, but Glantz remarked how difficult it is to draw two to a wheel, let alone drawing three to a wheel.

Shakerchi Leaves Aldemir Short; Dehkharghani Rakes in the Profit

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Prior to the final draw, Koray Aldemir check-raised out of the big blind and then called a three-bet by Talal Shakerchi on the button. He took one new card while Shakerchi patted and Aldemir then check-called a bet. Shakerchi tabled the 7x6x5x4x2x and that won the pot, leaving Aldemir very short.

One hand later, Shakerchi capped the preflop raising action in the cutoff and was called by Ray Dehkharghani on the button as well as Ben Yu in the hijack. They each discarded one and it checked to Dehkharghani, who bet and earned two calls.

On the second draw, Yu and Shakerchi discarded one while Dehkharghani. It checked to the latter once more and a bet by Dehkharghani was check-called two times.

Yu was the only one to discard one more card as Shakerchi and Dehkharghani patted. It got checked through this time and Yu exposed a pair of sixes. Shakerchi flashed the 8x7x only but mucked when Dehkharghani had the best of it with the 8x6x4x3x2x.

Action folded to Koray Aldemir in the cutoff who opened to 16,000. Next to act was Michael Noori who three-bet to 70,000. Ben Yu, in the big blind, put in a cold four-bet to the tune of 190,000.

Aldemir quickly got out of the way and Noori went into the tank. Eventually, he settled on a call.

Yu stood pat and Noori drew one. Yu checked to Noori who checked behind.

Yu immediately fanned out 7x6x5x3x2x for a pat number three and Noori mucked.

A short-stacked Chris Brewer completed on third street and got called by Daniel Alaei. Brewer then got his final chips in on fourth with Alaei calling.

Brewer's aces were ahead of Alaei's sixes, but a second pair of eights on fifth street gave Alaei the advantage.

Brewer couldn't improve his aces and he was sent to the rail, where he'll likely return to enjoying his $250,000 Super High-Roller victory and the more than $5,000,000 that came with it from Sunday.
