Sergi Reixach Leads 87 Surviving Players After Day 1 of Event #8: $25,000 High Roller NLH

Day 1 of Event #8: $25,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em has come to an end and Sergi Reixach is the chip leader after eight levels of play. The eighth event in the 2022 World Series of Poker at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas drew 229 entrants on the first day to generate a prize pool of $5,410,125, with more expected before the close of registration on Day 2.

Reixach leads a surviving field of 87 after bagging a total of 1,418,000. His best finish at the WSOP was a fourth place run in the 2021 $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em event and he is looking for his second cash of the series after a 39th place finish in this year’s $2,500 Freezeout.

The leader is followed by 2014 bracelet winner David Miscikowski and Justin Young, the only two other players to finish with over 1,000,000 chips. Young is looking for his first cash of the series after he failed to find the payout window despite having the chip lead at the beginning of the final day of the $100,000 High Roller.

Among the players near the top of the leaderboard are Sam Grafton, Martin Stausholm, and Cary Katz. Other players finding a bag for Day 2 include bracelet winners Michael Wang, Josh Arieh, David Peters, Adrian Mateos, Brian Rast, Jason Koon, Stephen Chidwick, JC Tran, Bertrand Grospellier, Julien Martini, and 2021 Main Event champion Koray Aldemir.

Players that failed to find a bag include Daniel Negreanu, Maria Ho, and defending champion Tyler Cornell. Negreanu was out after Byron Kaverman beat his king-high river shove with a pair of pocket eights, while Ho jammed with pocket eights and ran into Kaverman’s pocket tens. Cornell took his shot at defending his title, but he was out when his ace-six ran into Ben Lamb’s ace-king.

Players will return on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Day 2 in Paris Purple and blinds will resume in Level 9 at 5,000/10,000 with a 10,000 ante. Day 2 will play ten 60-minute levels with a 15-minute break after every two and a dinner break is scheduled after Level 14. The Day 3 finale is schedule for Monday at a time that has yet to be determined.

Be sure to keep it with the PokerNews team throughout the rest of the weekend for coverage of the conclusion of the $25,000 High Roller and live updates from your favorite tournaments at the 2022 World Series of Poker.

Young Floats to Victory

Nível 8 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Justin Young
Justin Young

Action picked up on the flop in a three-way pot with about 38,000 in the middle. The board read {a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}.

The big blind player checked to Brian Rast in middle position, and Rast bet 22,000 into his two opponents. Only Justin Young made the call from late position.

The turn came the {2-Spades}. Rast bet again, this time 78,000. Young thought for about 20 seconds and made the call.

The river {10-Diamonds} didn't change a lot, now Rast slowed down and checked. Young went for a bet of 175,000. Rast thought for a bit and let his cards go.

Young took the pot, but not before flipping up the {9-Spades}.

"You earned that one with the pots you won before when you had it," said another player at the table.

"Eh, I had the {9-Spades}{10-Spades}. I floated the flop, picked up a flush draw, and didn't know if my hand was good on the river. I'd always show both cards, but I thought it'd be more dramatic to show the {9-Spades}.

Either way, the bet was what took down the pot, regardless of what that other card was.

Grafton Hits the Miracle Shot

Nível 7 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

Sam Gafton opened to 12,000 from middle position before a short-stacked player went all in for about 100,000. Grafton didn't think too long before he made his decision.

He threw his cards up, spinning majestically through the air until one of them found a home in Dak Shak's coffee cup.

Shak dug out the dripping wet and now caffeinated {5-Hearts} while the dealer called the floor for a replacement.

"Look what he's done," said Grafton, throwing the blame to Shak when the floor arrived. "He's dunked it, he thought it was a donut. This isn't Dunkin' Donuts Dan. This is a serious tournament."

Sometimes to need a five of hearts in Dan Shak's coffee to liven up the table. Sam Grafton always helps too.

Kaverman Has the Bullets

Nível 6 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

Byron Kaverman opened in middle position to 11,000 and was immediately three-bet by the player on his left to 32,000.

The player on the button then four-bet to 225,000.

Kaverman thought for about a minute before deciding to go all in himself. The in-between player folded quickly.

Kaverman revealed the goods with {a-Spades}{a-Clubs} and the button player had {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}.

The flop offered little help when {4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} showed up. The turn kept hope alive with the {7-Diamonds}. All Kaverman needed to dodge was a diamond, and all the river offered was the {k-Spades}.

Arieh's Cowboys Good on the River

Josh Arieh
Josh Arieh

With about 180,000 in the pot, the cards on the board were {4-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}.

Josh Arieh put out a bet of 150,000. His opponent was in position and thought for a while about his decision. 150,000 was nearly half his stack. After some time, he did land on a call.

Arieh flipped over {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts} and his opponent mucked.

"How're you feeling?" asked Arieh's neighbor.

"Feeling good, feeling good," smiled Arieh.

The 2021 WSOP Player of the Year, Arieh has one of the biggest stacks in the room and looks to start the summer with a deep run.

Action started on the turn with a pot of about 55,000 and a board showing {k-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}.

The big blind checked over to Michael Wang in early position who put out a bet of 31,000. His opponent thought for about 20 seconds and decided to move all his chips into the middle, about 80,000. Wang called immediately.

Grafton Can't Miss Today

Nível 5 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

Action picked up with all cards on the board in a button versus small blind battle between Chance Kornuth and Sam Grafton.

Kornuth got all his chips in the middle from the button with {a-}{a-} and Grafton had the {a-}{k-} from the small blind.

The board ran out {k-}{4-}{k-}{j-}{q-} to give Grafton trips to rundown Kornuth's aces.

"Good luck, everybody," said Kornuth as his day was over.

"You're an early candidate for my favorite dealer of the year," Grafton told Danielle, the dealer responsible for the hand. "I'll tell you what happened at the cashier earlier, I pulled out a bundle of cash, and it was exactly the five k I needed. There's some magic here today," as Grafton rubbed his fingers together.

Kaverman's Snowmen Catch Negreanu's All In

Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

Action picked up on the river with Daniel Negreanu all in for about 115,000. He was fighting for a pot of about 150,000. Byron Kaverman was not going to let him have it easily.

The board showed {6-Hearts}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}.

Kaverman sat in the big blind and thought about the spot. Eventually, he slid chips in for the call.

Negreanu turned over {k-Diamonds}{7-Spades}.

Kaverman had {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, enough to add all of Negreanu's chips to his own stack.

Lehr Makes the Right Call

Nível 4 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Keith Lehr
Keith Lehr

Action picked up on the turn with a pot of about 130,000. The board read {k-Spades}{6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and Keith Lehr checked from the small blind to his sole opponent, Brock Wilson in middle position. Wilson decided to check behind and go to the river.

The {j-Hearts} made things interesting, the front door flush draw came in and a one-liner to a straight did as well.

Lehr checked again, and Wilson slid all of his chips except a single 500 chip into the pot.

Lehr went deep into the tank. He had Wilson covered, but the bet represented about 80 percent of his own stack. After about 3 minutes, Lehr made the call.

Wilson flipped the {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, but Lehr had the {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for the rivered straight to collect the pot.
