Final Day Recap

With 30-minute levels, there was no shortage of action at any point on Day 2. The action started with 102 entrants and only took four hours to reach the final 24 players. Once the players reached the final table, they had about a 30 big blinds average, resulting in huge swings and each hand being a vital pot. Angelov handled those swings well.

"All the time, I felt perfect, and I knew I would win this tournament," shared Angelov. "I was short-stacked, but that's nothing. You have to believe, pick the right moments, and that's it. If you start to worry about the game, you can't. You just have to enjoy every minute."

Several players had large rails at the final table. Gregg Merkow, Guillaume Soumier, and Vivian Saliba all had cheering sections ready to roar when they won pots. Angelov, frequently listening to music on his headphones, had other people on his mind during his path to victory.

Pointing at a tattoo on his arm, Angelov shared its meaning. "That's my brother. He passed away seven years ago. I love to play poker, I'm not a professional, but he would call me the 'Poker Machine.' Almost two months ago, I lost my mother too. This is for my brother and my mother. There may have been nobody here for me, but I know that my brother and my mother are here."

Congratulations to Konstantin Angelov, the newest winner at the World Series of Poker, for taking home his maiden prestigious gold bracelet!

Gregg Merkow was facing a 3,500,000 bet from Konstantin Angelov on a flop of {2-Hearts}{3-Spades}{7-Diamonds} after the action went limp-check preflop.

Merkow then bet pot and they got the rest of Merkow's 15,000,000 chips in and cards were tabled.

Gregg Merkow: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}{2-Clubs}{6-Hearts}
Konstantin Angelov: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Spades}

The turn and river were blanks and Angelov's set of three's held to bust Merkow in second place for $123,251.

Igor Ioffe Eliminated in 3rd Place ($92,200)

Nível 39 : 600,000/1,200,000, 1,200,000 ante
Igor Ioffe

Gregg Merkow limped the small blind and saw Igor Ioffe bet 3,600,000 in the big blind. Merkow called.

The flop came {5-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{j-Hearts}. Merkow checked in flow and Ioffe continued for pot, an 8,400,000 chip bet.

"I've got a big decision," said Merkow, while he thought. Ioffe didn't have much behind. "All in," announced Merkow. Ioffe called, and the two shorter stacks were off to an important runout.

"I don't have an ace,"said Ioffe.

"Inside straight draw," said Merkow.

Igor Ioffe: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Gregg Merkow: {q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}

"What do we need, Gregg?" shouted the rail.

"A two, three, or four!" said Merkow.

The turn wasn't any of those cards when the {8-} hit. The river, however, was the straight-completing {2-Clubs} to give Merkow the straight and send Ioffe home in third place.

Guillaume Soumier Eliminated in 4th Place ($69,501)

Nível 38 : 500,000/1,000,000, 1,000,000 ante
Guillaume Soumier
Guillaume Soumier

After a battle between Guillaume Soumier and Gregg Merkow a couple of hands prior, Soumier was about 10,000,000 chips shorter going into this one.

Guillaume had opened the button a couple of hands later to 2,500,000. Konstantin Angelov made the call and they saw a {4-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{7-Hearts} flop. Angelov then lead for pot, 8,500,000 and Soumier got in his last 10,000,000 or so and Angelov made the call.

Guillaume Soumier: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}
Konstantin Angelov: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

Angelov had a gut shot against the gut shot and kings of Soumier but the {4-} turn and {5-} river gave Angelov a superior straight to bust Soumier in fourth for $69,501, a great score for the French dealer who calls London his home.

Angelov's Turn to Bounce Back

Action picked up on the flop in a three-way pot with about 10,000,000 in the middle. The flop read {10-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. Igor Ioffe led from the blinds for pot, Konstantin Angelov called for less and was at risk. Gregg Merkow folded and got out of the way.

Igor Ioffe: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

Ioffe had flopped two pair, but Angelov had the overpair and a flush draw. The {7-Clubs} turn changed nothing, but the {8-Spades} river changed everything. Angelov doubled to stay alive and make Ioffe the current short stack.

Merkow Recovers Immediately By Running Down Aces

Nível 38 : 500,000/1,000,000, 1,000,000 ante
Greg Merkow
Greg Merkow

Gregg Merkow opened to just over 3,000,000 from the cutoff.

"Pretty much committed," said Merkow, as action folded to Konstantin Angelov in the big blind.

Angelov slid in a stack of chips that covered Merkow, who called to put his tournament life at risk.

Konstantin Angelov: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Gregg Merkow: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

"We need clubs bad!" said Markow.

No clubs showed up on the {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop.

"That's not good," said Merkow. "Seven, deuce, or jack," announced the rail.

The {2-Spades} hit the turn to give Merkow two pair and vault him to the lead. The river {q-Clubs} changed nothing and Merkow came from behind to recover with a large pot.

Guillaume Soumier Increases His Lead, Merkow Short

Guillaume Soumier
Guillaume Soumier

After Guillaume Soumier opened from under the gun to 2,500,000, Gregg Merkow called in the big blind.

The {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}{9-Spades} flop fell and Soumie continued for 2,000,000. Merkow made the call.

An {8-Hearts} caused them to slow down, both opting to check.

After a {q-Spades} came on the rivier though, Merkow check-called a bet of 6,000,000.

Soumie showed {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Hearts} for a flush, which trumped the straight of Merkow with {q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}.
