Mateos jumped to the top of the leaderboard in the middle of the evening after he picked up a pair of kings to win a cooler against Ali Imsirovic with a better full house. He trailed Phil Ivey in the closing minutes of the final level, but a big pot from the elimination of Dan Smith put him over the top at the end of the night. Mateos is the defending champion in this event after he outlasted 33 runners to defeat Ben Heath heads up in 2021, and he will come back with a dominant stack of 9,745,000 for Day 2 in search of his fifth WSOP bracelet.

The chip leader is followed near the top of the leaderboard by Ivey, Dario Sammartino, and Nick Petrangelo. Ivey joined the tournament at the beginning of the day and he consistently chipped up throughout the afternoon, including a pot with a set of deuces against Henrik Hecklen and a pair of pocket kings that sent Andrew Lichtenberger to the window to fire a second entry. But it was Ivey’s late-night run that put him near the top after he ran his stack up to 6,830,000 in the closing level.

Dan Zack and Alex Foxen rounded out the list of players that bagged over 4 million in chips.

Other returning players include Kathy Lehne, Justin Bonomo, and Seth Davies. Lehne mixed it up with some of the game’s most aggressive players and came out on top. First, it was Ivey, who lost an early pot to Lehne’s ace-king, and then it was Michael Addamo who folded to Lehne’s river bet a short time later to preserve what was left of his stack. She returns with 1,965,000 in search of her first WSOP bracelet.

Runners that used their second entry include Christoph Vogelsang, Alfred Decarolis, Chris Brewer, David Einhorn, Daniel Negreanu, Andrew Robl, Hecklen, Smith, Addamo and Lichtenberger. Decarolis, Addamo, and Smith were eliminated a second time and they will not return on Day 2.

Players will return at 2 p.m. on June 24 in Paris Purple to play down to five players on Day 2. Blinds will pick up at 15,000/30,000/30,000 in Level 11, and registration will remain open until the beginning of the tournament’s second day. The surviving players on Day 2 will return for a Day 3 finale that will be streamed by PokerGO.

Be sure to keep it with the PokerNews team all weekend long for updates from the $250,000 Super High Roller and other events at the 2022 World Series of Poker in its new home at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas.

Addamo Takes From Ivey; Lichtenberger Bowls a 269

Nível 9 : 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

Michael Addamo raised to 55,000 from middle position and David Peters called from the button before Phil Ivey came long from the big blind. The flop was {7-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}.

All three players checked and the turn was {9-Clubs}. Ivey bet 100,000 and Addamo raised to 350,000. Peters folded and Ivey called to see {q-Spades} on the river.

Ivey checked the river and folded without hesitation when Addamo committed all but his last T-5,000 chip.

The topic of conversation drifted to bowling throughout the hand after Andrew Lichtenberger shared that he recently rolled a 269 after a long layoff from the sport.

Chris Brewer and Jason Koon were impressed. Brewer claimed to have only broken 200 a couple of times in his life, and Koon said he's only done it once that he can remember. The players compared strategies and discussed the development of their hook.

"I should probably just be throwing a straight ball," Nick Petrangelo said.

Salomon Finds the Mute Button for Kabrhel

Nível 9 : 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Rick Salomon
Rick Salomon

Martin Kabrhel limped in from early position which invited Masashi Oya to come along on the button. Rick Salomon raised to 140,000 from the small blind and only Kabrhel called.

The flop came {6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Salomon checked to Kabrhel who just shoved all in. "I'll make it easy for you," Kabrhel said. Salomon was having none of it though as he quickly called off his stack of 700,000 chips.

Rick Salomon: {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Martin Kabrhel: {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}

Despite trailing on the flop, Salomon nailed the {k-Diamonds} on the turn to take the lead. The {q-Hearts} on the river only improved him to a flush to double up through Kabrhel.

"Isn't that the definition of getting what you asked for?" Chance Kornuth chuckled. The table finally got relief as Kabrhel remained quiet for at least the time being.

Mateos Coolers Imsirovic

Nível 8 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Adrian Mateos opened to 45,000 in early position and Ali Imsirovic defended from the big blind. The flop came {k-Hearts}{7-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and Imsirovic check-called a bet of 30,000 from Mateos.

The {6-Spades} landed on the turn and Imsirovic started with another check. Mateos threw in a bet of 115,000 and Imsirovic check-raised to 405,000. Mateos just called and the {7-Hearts} paired the board on the river.

Imsirovic used one of his time banks before ripping all in for around 1,800,000. Mateos snapped him off and Imsirovic tabled {7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for a full house. However, Mateos held {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} for a bigger full house and Imsirovic was sent to the rail.

A completed board of {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}{5-Clubs} was spread across the felt with around 700,000 in the middle already. Henrik Hecklen checked from the big blind and Phil Ivey dropped in a bet of around 900,000.

Hecklen only had around 365,000 in front of him and he dipped into the tank for nearly two minutes. He eventually pushed out some chips to call and Ivey turned over {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} for a set of deuces. Hecklen was forced to show his {a-Hearts}{j-Spades} before heading to the rail.

"I thought you were full of shit," Jason Koon said to Ivey after the hand. Ivey just nodded with a grin on his face as he continued to stack his newly acquired chips.

Negreanu Out, Martini In

Daniel Negreanu

The action folded to Dan Smith on the button who made it 35,000 to go. Daniel Negreanu shipped all in for just less than 350,000 from the small blind and Smith snap-called.

Daniel Negreanu: {q-Spades}{10-Spades}
Dan Smith: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

"We need to win a flip or else re-buy," Negreanu said as he pulled out his phone to film the hand.

"You get more chips if you re-buy," Smith pointed out.

The flop came {a-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Diamonds} to give Smith a set of nines but Negreanu picked up a flush draw. The {6-Diamonds} on the turn also gave him a straight draw but the {2-Diamonds} bricked on the river.

Daniel Negreanu opened to 30,000 from under the gun and Koray Aldemir called on the button. Justin Bonomo stuck in a three-bet from the small blind which got Negreanu to fold but Aldemir still called.

The flop came {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} and Bonomo led out with a bet of 80,000. Aldemir called and the {7-Hearts} rolled off on the turn. Bonomo announced another bet of 280,000 and Aldemir still called.

The river was the {4-Clubs} and Bonomo chose to check this time. Aldemir moved out a bet of 474,000, leaving just 1,000 behind. Bonomo said all in and Aldemir flicked in his last chip. Bonomo turned over {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for a set of queens but Aldemir flopped a straight with {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} to double up.

Foxen Flushes Decarolis to the Rail

Nível 4 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Alfred Decarolis
Alfred Decarolis

Alfred Decarolis opened to 20,000 from under the gun and Chris Brewer called on his left. Alex Foxen was next to act and made it 80,000 to go. Both Decarolis and Brewer called as they went three ways to the flop of {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}.

All three players checked and the {3-Hearts} hit the turn, putting four hearts on the board. Decarolis just open-shoved all in for 573,000 which got a fold from Brewer. Foxen asked for the count and then called.

Foxen flipped over {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} for a king-high flush and Decarolis was drawing dead with {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for a jack-high flush. The insignificant {10-Diamonds} completed the board and Decarolis was eliminated.

"I folded a set," Brewer commented after the hand.

Decarolis quickly grabbed the necessary chips for a re-entry and headed off to the registration desk.
