Sitting eighth in chips overall is the defending champion Brian Hastings who bagged 95,500. Last year, Hastings won this event for his fourth WSOP bracelet when he defeated the 354-player field to capture the $233,202 first-place prize on a final table that included Andrew Brown, Tim Marsters, Jeff Madsen, Lee Markholt, Dutch Boyd, and Bruno Fitoussi.

Players also surviving into Day 2 include WSOP bracelet winners Andrey Zaichenko, John Monnette, Kevin Song, Jim Collopy, Ryan Riess, Tom Koral, Chris Ferguson, Ron Ware, Daniel Negreanu, Gary Benson, Greg Mueller, Benny Glaser, John Cernuto, Konstantin Puchkov, Dan Matsuzuki, Max Pescatori, Dominik Nitsche, Tommy Hang, Paul Volpe, Ismael Bojang, Dan Heimiller, Robert Campbell, Phillip Hui, Cliff Josephy, David Singer, Tony Ma, Scott Clements, Brandon Shack-Harris, Marco Johnson, Rep Porter, Jeff Lisandro, Ben Yu, Jeff Madsen, Mike Matusow, Joao Vieira, and Ian Johns.
