Negreanu, Matusow Chasing Defending Champion Gamble on Day 3 of $1,500 PLO Hi-Lo

Daniel Negreanu & Mike Matusow
Daniel Negreanu & Mike Matusow

A lot of World Series of Poker bracelet holders will return at 12 noon today for Day 3 of Event #53: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better. In fact, the 20 players remaining have already won 17 bracelets between them, including Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow, and defending champion and current chip leader, Nathan Gamble.

Up there with Gold and Moneymaker, Gamble has one of the best surnames in poker. Gamble broke out in 2017 capturing his first WSOP gold bracelet in this very event. A field of 830 stood in his way last year, this year the field climbed to 935 but that hasn't stopped Gamble from finding a way to land himself in a familiar position with a frontrunning stack of 834,000 to start Day 3.

The bulk of the bracelets come from Negreanu's six and Matusow's four, both with their eyes on winning another one. Matusow's résumé is littered with deep runs in Omaha Hi-Lo events, but he has never finished better than fifth. Coming into play with 436,000, the fifth-best stack, Matusow is in prime position to improve on his previous woes.

Negreanu has yet to taste Omaha glory at the World Series. Surprisingly enough, with 106 career cashes at the WSOP, only 15 are from an Omaha variant. Negreanu's previous best finish in a PLO Hi-Lo event came last year in the $10,000 Championship. Negreanu finished runner-up, the second time to do so in Omaha Hi-Lo. There is lots of work to do if Negreanu is going to change that today, hitting the felt as the third shortest stack, wielding just 96,000.

Joseph Couden (776,000) returns with the second-best stack and behind him are Robert Campbell (565,000) and Brad Albrinck (564,000). Three-time WSOP bracelet winner Eli Elezra bagged 419,000 chips, with fellow bracelet winner Bryce Yockey ending Day 2 with 400,000. Chris Conrad (364,000), Garrett Garvin (347,000), two-time bracelet winner Quinn Do (300,000), and Bruno Fitoussi (262,000) are also still in the hunt for the $244,370 top prize and coveted gold bracelet.

Stay tuned to the blog as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on the floor providing live coverage until the last card comes off the deck and the WSOP's latest champion is crowned.

Couden Busts Albrinck in the Largest Pot of the Tournament

Nível 21 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante
Brad Albrinck
Brad Albrinck

Joey Couden defended his big blind against a raise to 30,000 from Brad Albrinck who was under the gun.

Couden checked the {9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} flop and Albrinck fired 70,000. Couden stacked a raise and placed in 180,000. Albrinck, however, snap-potted it for his all in of about 500,000.

Couden seemed to be shocked but he took only about 30 seconds and then put in calling chips, allowing a showdown for the largest pot of the tournament.

Brad Albrinck: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Joey Couden: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

Couden was ahead with two pair and he couldn't have seen a better card hit the felt on the turn than the {9-Diamonds}. Couden filled a boat and Albrinck was left stone dead for a 1.2 million pot.

The {2-Spades} river just confirmed Couden's massive win as he rose to 1.3 million. Albrinck, one of the biggest stacks coming back for the final day, has ended up finishing in 19th place.

Kyle Emerson Eliminated in 18th Place ($8,503)

Nível 21 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante

Mihails Morozovs limped from early position and hijack Kyle Emerson potted for 54,000. Morozovs called and then shoved the {6-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{9-} flop for Emerson's last 60,000 or so. "I guess I have to call," Emerson said, although he wasn't too happy about the flop.

Emerson: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Morozovs: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{4-Clubs}

The {4-Diamonds} turn gave Morozovs two pair and the {6-Spades} river bricked Emerson's outs to survive. He shipped his stack towards the middle so that the dealer could send it to Morozovs and then walked away, finishing in 18th place.

With about 100,000 in the middle on the flop of a {7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{7-Hearts} board, Lee Armstrong bet the pot and Eli Elezra check-raised pot over the top. Armstrong's decision was for his tournament life and after a moment debating, he made the call for his last 380,000.

Eli Elezra: {a-Spades}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Lee Armstrong: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{4-Clubs}

Armstrong was drawing relatively dead with Elezra flopping a full house and having a nut-low draw. Armstrong would hit the rail in 17th place when the board ran out {10-Diamonds}{8-Spades}.

Just as that end was finishing, Garrett Garvin busted from the outer table and fell in 16th place. Both players earned $8,503 for their efforts.

In a six-way limped pot, Quinn Do fired 35,000 on the {J-Spades}{3-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} flop out of the hijack. Only small blind Bruno Fitoussi called and the {9-Hearts} hit the turn.

Fitoussi led out 60,000 and Do paused for a moment before moving all in. Fitoussi snap-called, showing {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. Do had a jack as well, tabling {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{6-}{4-Clubs} but Fitoussi had filled up on the turn. Do Needed an ace on the river and he wouldn't get one as the {5-Diamonds} completed the board to end his tournament run in 15th place.

In a battle of blinds, Mihails Morozovs raised in the small blind and moved all in when Kim Kallman potted. Kallman called off and the cards were on their backs.

Morozovs: {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Kallman: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}

The {2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop was dealt and the table said in unison: "Wheel."

"No longer a fair fight," Mike Matusow added.

The {6-Hearts} turn and {Q-Clubs} river didn't help Morozovs who needed to see a five. He was knocked out in 13th place while Kallman climbed to 800,000 or so.

Yockey alerted the table he would need a few minutes and eventually made the call. Conrad tabled the {9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and Yockey mucked, surrendering a massive pot to Conrad.

Jamison Doubles to Send Negreanu to a Short Stack

Nível 24 : 12,000/24,000, 0 ante
Gregory Jamison
Gregory Jamison

Daniel Negreanu raised the cutoff to 55,000 and Gregory Jamison three-bet to 171,000 in position. Negreanu called and the flop came {Q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}.

Negreanu checked and Jamison moved all in. Negreanu asked for a count and when he learned that it was 85,000, he made the call, even though his hand didn't connect to the flop.

Jamison turned up {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Negreanu said, "I need hearts," before he showed {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}.

The {10-Spades} turn was good for Jamison who locked the double and a meaningless {8-Spades} completed the board.

Negreanu Keeps Doubling

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Down to 19,000 when the 10-handed final table started, Daniel Negreanu was one foot out of the door but a streak of doubles saw him catapult his stack to 236,000.

The latest came when Mike Matusow raised to 60,000 in the first position. Negreanu was in the middle and said: "Mike Matusow raises under the gun? Then I'm all in."

Matusow called off with {A-Hearts}{6-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and Negreanu was ahead with {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{7-Clubs}.

The flop, however, pushed the odds in Matusow's favor as the {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{8-Clubs} hit the felt. But the {9-Clubs} turn gave Negreanu a flush and Matusow couldn't finish with a boat to eliminate Negreanu. The {J-Hearts} river bricked his low draw as well and Negreanu scooped the whole pot.
