Elio Fox Riding the Wave; Bags the Chip Lead After Day 1 of Event #5: $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller

Nível 9 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Elio Fox
Elio Fox

It was just a couple of days ago that Elio Fox locked up his second World Series of Poker bracelet by winning the inaugural super turbo bounty event at the 2018 World Series of Poker. So far, it looks as if that was only the start of a massive heater. Fox bagged up a stack of 2,881,000 after the first day of Event #5: $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller, good enough to hold the chip lead at the end of play.

Most of Fox's chips came from a massive confrontation with Dario Sammartino. In the hand, Fox got it in with top-pair top kicker against Sammartino's overpair. The turn was a brick, but the river gave Fox two pair and pushed him over the 2 million chip mark well before anyone else in the tournament. He held on to those chips for the rest of the day and bagged up the biggest stack of the tournament so far.

Day 1 brought out a total of 97 entries, of which, 49 survived to make it through to Day 2. Nearly everyone who entered the tournament is a recognizable name, but a few of the survivors who bagged up big stacks include Darren Elias (2,038,000), Bryn Kenney (1,971,000), Sergio Aido (1,493,000), Byron Kaverman (1,282,000) and Stephen Chidwick (1,276,000) . Another player to bag up a big stack at the end of Day 1 was Jan-Eric Schwippert who finished off the night by winning several pots to move to 2,582,000 for the second biggest stack in the tournament. Justin Bonomo also made it through to Day 2 and is looking to add to his already impressive resume of high roller finishes this year with another at the WSOP. He’ll bring 1,046,000 into Day 2.

For every player who survived though, one fell. Day 1 saw the likes of Alex Foxen, Antonio Esfandiari, Jonathan Duhamel, Dan Shak, Anthony Zinno, Erik Seidel, Chris Hunichen, Nick Schulman, and Daniel Negreanu all bust, just to name a few. Negreanu fired two bullets on Day 1 but failed to find any traction. Near the end of the last level, Negreanu got it in in a coinflip situation against Johannes Becker, but Becker turned a pair and Negreanu was eliminated.

As that was Negreanu's second bullet he will be unable to re-enter the tournament on Day 2, but other players can still re-enter once more if they haven't already. Registration for the event will remain open until the start of level 12 so there is plenty of time to see some new faces join the field.

Action resumes on Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m. local time and players will continue by playing 10 more 60-minute levels. As an additional note, in a deviation from the structure sheet, players will be given a total of six time extensions on Day 2, as opposed to the four given on Day 1. Play will begin with blinds of 8,000/16,000 and a big blind ante of 16,000 as well. PokerNews will continue with our wire to wire coverage of this event, so make sure to stay tuned in for it all.

Soverel Falls Into Eibinger's Trap

Nível 9 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Sam Soverel
Sam Soverel

Cary Katz opened with a raise to 27,000 and was called by Matthias Eibinger in the cutoff seat. On the button, David Einhorn called. Sam Soverel was in the big blind and took a look around the table. He made a comment about there being a lot in the pot and then moved all in for 343,000. Katz folded. Eibinger called and Einhorn folded.

Matthias Eibinger: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}
Sam Soverel: {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

The board ran out {J-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and that gave Eibinger the best hand with two pair. Soverel headed to the rail and Eibinger took down the pot, moving to right around 1,700,000 chips.

Riess Snaps Off Fast

Nível 8 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Dietrich Fast
Dietrich Fast

Ryan Riess opened on the button with a raise to 25,000. Dietrich Fast was next to act and he put out a bet of 280,000 which represented a significant portion of his stack. Action folded back to Riess who moved all in quickly and Fast called.

Dietrich Fast: {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}
Ryan Riess: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{4-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Spades} which left Fast drawing dead on the turn, as Riess made a full house. The stacks were matched up and before leaving, Fast jokingly raked in the pot before pushing it to Riess. Reiss moves over 1 million chips after taking down the pot.

Sammartino Eliminated by Fox

Nível 8 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Dario Sammartino
Dario Sammartino

Following a flop of {J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and with about 350,000 in the pot, Elio Fox checked from the small blind and Dario Sammartino bet 150,000 from the cutoff. Fox used a time extension before check-raising all in with a covering stack, and Sammartino called after about 10 seconds.

Fox showed {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs} for a pair of jacks, trailing Sammartino's {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

The {Q-Hearts} turn gave Fox a few extra outs with a flush draw, but he didn't need it as the {A-Clubs} river fell to give him aces and jacks to eliminate Sammartino.

After the hand, there was a little confusion as to how many time extensions Fox used in the hand.

"It was one preflop and one on the flop," said Fox. "And I still made an incredibly terrible play, but it worked out great!"

Two Hands Send Haxton to the Rail

Nível 7 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Stefan Schillhabel raised to 18,000 from under the gun and was called by Isaac Haxton on the button and Justin Bonomo in the big blind. The flop came {a-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades} and the action checked to Haxton who bet 17,000. Bonomo check-raised to 67,000 and Schillhabel got out of the way. Haxton called and the {j-Hearts} landed on the turn.

Bonomo led out for 115,000 and Haxton continued to call to the {8-Hearts} on the river. Bonomo eyed up Haxton's stack of 320,000 and then shoved all in. Haxton took his allotted time and then slid his cards to the muck.

In the next hand, Ryan Riess bumped it up to 18,000 in middle position and Haxton re-raised to 55,000 in the cutoff. The action folded back to Riess who moved all in and Haxton called off his last 320,000.

It was a race situation with Haxton holding {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs} and Riess with the two overcards {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}. The {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Spades} flop was safe for Haxton but the {k-Hearts} on the turn favored Riess. The river brought the {8-Hearts} and in the span of two hands, Haxton was sent to the rail.

Bohn Bluffs it All Off

Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

David Einhorn opened the action with a raise to 20,000. Jan-Eric Schwippert called on the button. Blake Bohn and Cary Katz tagged along as well from the small and big blinds respectively.

The flop was {K-Clubs}{10-Spades}{Q-Spades} and action checked to Einhorn who put out a bet of 55,000. Bohn was the only caller.

Both players checked on the {2-Clubs} turn and the {9-Clubs} dropped on the river. Bohn moved in for right around 150,000 and Einhorn called instantly.

"You win," Bohn said. "Nice hand."

Einhorn showed {J-Clubs}{8-Spades} for a rivered straight while the dealer turned up Bohn's {7-Spades}{4-Spades} for just a missed flush draw. Einhorn scooped the pot and moved to over 700,000 while Bohn exited the tournament.
