Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Poker's all-time leading money earner, Daniel Negreanu, will look to add to that record today when Day 2 of Event #38: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship begins at 2 p.m.

The six-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner has already had one close call this summer with a third-place finish in the $1,500 Eight Game Mix. Negreanu is in prime position to make another deep run, looking to improve on his previous best in this event which came all the way back in 2009 when he placed 10th. Negreanu returns with 212,000.

Wielding the chip lead when play resumes is Ben Yu. Yu was among the last players to join the field on Day 1 and quickly climbed the ranks, ending the day with 280,000.

Al Barbieri (208,000), Seiver (202,500), Mark Gregorich (153,000), Jesse Martin (149,000), Robert Mizrachi (142,500) and Matt Grapenthien (139,500) are just some of the cast of characters who will hit the felt when the action picks back up. Defending champion Mike Wattel is also still in the hunt for back-to-back titles. Wattel ended the night on 154,500 and will look to increase that number on Day 2.

All is not lost for anyone who wasn't able to make it to the registration line before the Day 1 came to a close as registration remains open until the start of Day 2. As noted, Day 2 begins at 2 p.m. with limits at 4,000/8,000 for the first two hours of the day.

Stay tuned to the blog as PokerNews will be on the floor providing live coverage until the last card comes off the deck and the next WSOP champion is crowned.

"Look at That Vicious Pot!"

Nível 11 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Ben Yu

Greg Mueller was one of the players who entered the tournament today but he was immediately involved in a large pot. Unfortunately for him, he ended up on the wrong side of a cooler.

Mueller had ace-five suited out on fourth street, betting in a spot versus Ben Yu. Yu called and Mueller kept barrelling all the way. Both players paired their boards on sixth street with Yu catching eights while Mueller hit sixes.

Mueller fired one more time on the river but Yu check-raised and Mueller knew it was a bad sign. However, he'd made an ace-high flush and couldn't escape so he threw in calling chips.

Ben Yu: {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades} / {7-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Greg Mueller: {Q-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{K-} / {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}

"Wow," Mueller said when Yu showed him sevens full.

He flashed his cards and then continued in amazement.

"Look at that vicious pot! 150,000 pot!" he said.

Yu soared over 300,000 in chips while Muller was downed to only 28,000 and he would lose them in the following minutes.

Obst Pulls Off a Savage Call

Nível 15 : 6,000/12,000, 1,500 ante
James Obst
James Obst

James Obst and Michael McKenna tangled in a pot which saw Obst keeping the aggression until the river. McKenna had higher cards on his board and checked to Obst on fourth, fifth, and sixth. Obst fired on all streets and McKenna was calling every bet within a second.

Then he changed his plan on the river and led out.

Obst was seen whispering for himself, with his lips reading, "What?"

Then he spent some more time processing the hand and finally tossed in calling chips.

"Sixes," McKenna announced, showing {6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{Q-} / {6-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{4-Spades}{K-Diamonds}.

Obst had that beat with a pair of tens, turning up {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Hearts} / {10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} for a great hero call.

"Nice hand, James," Yordan Petrov complimented Obst.

Brunson Enjoys Double Crying Time

Nível 16 : 6,000/12,000, 1,500 ante
Todd Brunson
Todd Brunson

If anyone witnessed a hand that play out between Todd Brunson, Yaniv Birman and Joseph Cappello, they would enjoy mostly the final scene that unfolded after the river round.

First things first, Cappello led out on fourth and Brunson and Birman both called. Cappello continued on fifth and Brunson raised, but all three remained in the contest for two bets. Brunson bet on sixth again, earning two calls again.

Then he bet on the river and both of his opponents laid their hands down, with the final situation looking as follows:

Todd Brunson: {X-}{X-} / {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades}{Q-Hearts} / {X-}
Yaniv Birman: {X-}{X-} / {5-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} / {X-} - fold
Joseph Cappello: {X-}{X-} / {5-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds} / {X-} - fold

"You deserve this one, Todd, but I had a big draw," Cappello said.

"You had a big draw? I had a big f***ing draw!" Birman replied, showing {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} for a straight flush draw on fifth street. Cappello then countered, opening his flush draw and open-ended draw.

"How is there no club coming? Brick, brick, brick," Birman sighed.

Cappello continued, moaning about his own blank river.

Brunson, in the meantime, silently stacked the newly earned chips with a laugh on his face.

"How could you fade two draws? There were no aces out!" Birman still couldn't believe that he didn't get there. But while Birman and Cappello lost this one, they are both still playing very healthy stacks.

Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu was all in on third street, facing off against James Obst. Negreanu started with a pair of eights but Obst was ahead with jacks.

Daniel Negreanu: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{5-Spades}{K-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{7-Spades}

Obst made a six-high straight on the river and Negreanu was drawing dead, peeling a meaningless {7-Spades}. He walked away in 15th place.

Michael McKenna was short-stacked but he found aces and tried to spin it up. Unfortunately for him, Nicholas Seiken was dealt trip tens and McKenna's tournament life was on the edge of a cliff.

Michael McKenna: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}/{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Nicholas Seiken: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}/{10-Clubs}{J-Hearts}

Jordan Siegel
Jordan Siegel

Jordan Siegel was all in on third for a dust and four other players had a shot at knocking him out. James Obst reduced the hand to heads-up when he hit a pair of sixes on fourth street.

Jordan Siegel: {10-Hearts}{4-Spades} / {10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
James Obst: {5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} / {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

Siegel had split tens and was in good shape but Obst's hand rolled out {5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} / {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{K-Spades}{J-Hearts} / {4-Hearts}. He hit two pair and Siegel sweated his river card but he finished unimproved with {10-Hearts}{4-Spades} / {10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} / {Q-Clubs}.

Siegel bowed out in 14th place and the rest of the field was guaranteed at least $14,910.

Nicholas Seiken

Nicholas Seiken was down to fewer than one bet on the break and he registered in the Big Bet Mix, expecting to bust shortly. However, he managed to double twice and ran his stack to about 80,000. But his comeback was halted shortly thereafter.

Seiken made it two bets after Yaniv Birman completed and Birman called. Seiken bet on fourth and Birman called. The rest of the money went in on fourth where Birman hit a pair of sixes. He led out, Seiken raised and Birman put him all in for 7,000 more.

Nicholas Seiken: {A-Clubs}{5-Hearts} / {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Yaniv Birman: {10-Hearts}{2-Spades} / {10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}
