Bracelet Winners Yockey and Friedman Jockey for Top Spot

Nível 10 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Bryce Yockey
Bryce Yockey

The true test of poker versatility has begun at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, as Day 1 of $10,000 Dealer's Choice wrapped up just past 2 a.m. Friday morning with 41 players, less than half of the field, remaining.

Dealer's Choice gives players a unique opportunity to play some games at a high-stakes level that are never ordinarily present in tournament poker. The format appears to have a solid following of about 100 loyal players, as 103 turned out so far with registration still open until the first cards come off the deck on Friday afternoon. That's already one better than last year's total.

World Series of Poker bracelet winners Bryce Yockey and Adam Friedman led the way when the plaques were finally done being shuffled for the night. Yockey finished with 328,500 and Friedman narrowly behind with 316,700.

Friedman said he wasn't playing much of a tournament schedule this summer but couldn't resist firing this event, one he has said he looks forward to every year. He showed up a few hours in and got the ball rolling early with a big bluff holding blockers against Chris Vitch in Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo. He rocketed from 50,000 to 240,000 in about 40 minutes in the latter stages of the day.

Yockey, who grabbed his first bracelet just last year in the $10,000 PLO8 Championship, had a huge stack from start to finish. He knocked out defending champ John Racener in Limit Omaha, flopping a set of eights and taking Racener's last few crumbs to ensure there wouldn't be a repeat winner.

Dylan Linde (224,700), Marco Johnson (204,700), Ray Dehkharghani (148,500) and Daniel Negreanu (125,500) also bagged solid stacks.

The field was significantly trimmed as despite a chunk of the games having limit formats and split pots, plenty of big-bet action took place in games like No-Limit Hold'em, PLO and especially Pot-Limit 2-7 triple draw. The graveyard reads like a list of poker's most accomplished, including Mike Leah, Stephen Chidwick, Phil Galfond, Paul Volpe and John Hennigan.

Play resumes at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 8, so come back PokerNews to continue following updates of this event.

Anderson and Abdalla Chop Up Kassela

Nível 9 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Frank Kassela
Frank Kassela

Badeucey

Catching the action on the second draw, Frank Kassela was all in for his last 6,400 with Calvin Anderson and Jake Abdalla creating a side pot.

Abdalla and Kassela drew two, while Anderson drew one on the button.

Abdalla checked from the big blind, and Anderson bet. Abdalla called and drew one as Kassela drew one, and Anderson stood pat.

Abdalla checked, Anderson bet, and Abdalla called.

Abdalla: {8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}
Anderson: {9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}
Kassela: {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}

With Abdalla making a rough-eight, and Anderson making an eight-dugi, they split the side pot, and the main pot when Kassela's hand of a pair and a nine-dugi wasn't enough to keep him in the tournament.

"If You Can't Gamble With That, What Can You Gamble With?"

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Daniel Negreanu raised under the gun to 3,000, and the action folded to Scott Bohlman in the small blind, and he bumped it up to 10,000.

Negreanu took a measured amount of time before cutting out a four-bet to 30,000.

It was now Bohlman's turn to enter the think-tank, and after several minutes, he pushed out 135,000 in pink 5,000-denomination chips.

Negreanu had just 63,000 behind, and he pushed it forward to be at-risk, and all in for 93,000.

Bohlman discarded, as did Negreanu.

"Oh we're both gambling!" laughed Negreanu.

On the second draw both players drew another card, and on the final draw, Bohlman drew one more.

"Well in that case ... I guess I'm pat. You gotta beat a ten!" Negreanu remarked.

Negreanu: {10-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{2-}
Bohlman: {5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}

Bohlman began squeezing his card and then suddenly let out a sigh to acknowledge he bricked his wheel draw. Eventually Bohlman's {Q-} would be shown and Negreanu would be ensured of the double to nearly 190,000.

"If you can't gamble with that, what can you gamble with?" added Negreanu as his all in stack was being counted.

"Such a crazy game!" remarked Wattel.

"F**k it! Let's go! Once you're in, you're in right?" asked Negreanu as he collected the pot.

Face Up No Problem for Thornton

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Game Selection Card
Game Selection Card

Stud Hi-Lo Regular

Schuyler Thornton started with the {a-Diamonds} and apparently thought he won the pot without contest because he turned over his other two cards: {5-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Problem was, Another player had entered with the {7-Clubs} and Thornton didn't see it. The supervisor arrived and said it was a live hand so play proceeded. Thornton picked up four to a wheel on fifth and bet, and his opponent called, then they checked sixth.

Thornton: {5-Clubs}{3-Spades}/{a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}/{x-}
Opponent: {x-}{x-}/{7-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Spades}{j-Clubs}/{x-}

Thornton bet the river to put his opponent all in. The player called with a pair of jacks but Thornton had made a wheel with his lone down card, the {4-Hearts}.

"You know, I'm supposed to give you a penalty," the supervisor said. "But I think the disadvantage you gave yourself was enough."

Limit Omaha

Bryce Yockey picked the game and came out firing with a raise to 4,000. A short-stacked John Racener three-bet the small blind to 6,000 and Yockey called.

Racener bet his last 1,800 in the dark as the flop landed {J-Hearts}{8-}{6-Hearts}. Yockey called, and the defending champion was at risk.

Racener: {A-}{K-}{10-}{5-}
Yockey: {K-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Unfortunately for Racener, he had run into the set of Yockey, and when no help came on the turn or river, he was eliminated from the tournament.

Frankie O'Dell raised to 2,400 and Benny Glaser moved all in for 3,500. The big blind cold-called, and O'Dell called.

The two active players drew two as Glaser stood pat. O'Dell bet, and his opponent check-called.

O'Dell drew one and his opponent drew two before check-folding to O'Dell's bet of 2,400.

Glaser: {10-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
O'Dell: {8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
