Dinner Break; Isaac Baron Still Leading, Paul Pierce Dropping Dimes

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Paul Pierce
Paul Pierce

The third level of Day 3 is done and dusted with approximately 1,053 players heading on a 90-minute dinner break with play resuming at roughly 8:10 p.m.

Roughly 230 players would be bounced to the rail this level as players looked to ascend up the chip leaderboard. 2013 Poker Players' Championship winner Matthew Ashton decline came in two similar pots when he lost with a straight and flush draw twice to be bounced to the rail. Barry Greenstein then ran his {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} into {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} to hit the rail, before Ryan Riess' title defense came to an end when his {4-Hearts}{4-Spades} couldn't outdraw Steve Brecher's {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} on a {2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} board. Erik Seidel, Earl Barron, Ted Forrest, Chris Lindh, Kitty Kuo and Eric Wasserson would also join them on the rail.

Unfortunately for Jorn Walthaus, his day would end after he triple-barrel bluffed against 10-time NBA All-Star Paul Pierce. Walthaus raised out of the small blind and then barreled the {9-}{2-}{3-}{8-}{4-} board before moving all in on the river with {K-}{J-} only to have Pierce call him down with {8-}{8-}. Pierce celebrated by launching to his feet - giving his masseuse a small break — before returning to be seated behind a 237,000-chip stack. Pierce would end the level with 223,300.

Although chip leader Isaac Baron would have a quiet level, he still managed to finish on top as he takes 855,500 into his dinner break. However many players below him made a move up the leaderboard with the likes of Raul Mestre (825,000), Steve Tripp (755,000), Tim Roupe (750,000), Timur Margolin (712,000), Steve Chanthabouasy (658,000) and Martin Jacobson (597,000) all surging up the counts.

There's a first prize of $10 million awaiting the winner. While we wait for play to resume, see what players said they'd do if they were to win:

Keeping Up With the Pahujas

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mukul Pahuja
Mukul Pahuja

Brothers Vinny and Mukul Pahuja are seated no more than five steps away from each other at Tables 434 and 438 respectively in the Purple Section of the Amazon Room, and they both have respectable stacks as well.

Vinny is sitting at 361,000 chips, and little brother isn't so far behind with 350,000. Both of them have about double the average stack.

Mukul is having a banner year, winning the Season XII World Poker Tour Player of the Year, while Vinny has seven cashes at the 2014 WSOP, including 12th and seventh-place finishes in no-limit hold'em events.

Combined, the brothers only have one cash in the Main Event - Vinny finished 659th in 2011 for $19,359 - and could triple that number with a double cash on Day 4.

According to the Canadian, he raised to 5,100, Seidel three-bet to 14,000, and Benger put in a fourth bet to 30,200. Seidel moved all in for around 100,000, and Benger called.

Benger's {q-}{q-} held up agains Seidel's {a-}{k-}, and the latter hit the rail. Benger is up to 340,000 chips.

Get That Outta Here!

Jorn Walthaus gets Boomshakalaka'd
Jorn Walthaus gets Boomshakalaka'd

Decked out in a very Celtic-proud set of green shorts and t-shirt, Paul Pierce stood up and celebrated after winning a big pot.

As Jorn Walthaus made a speedy exit to the rail, our PokerNews reporter enquired about the hand details from tablemate Raymond Ezzie.

Ezzie explained that Pierce limped in early position only to have Walthaus raise from the small blind. Pierce made the call, and then called a bet on a {9-}{2-}{3-} flop that contained two spades.

The turn landed the {8-} and Walthaus fired out again with Pierce making the call as the river landed the {4-Spades}. Walthaus moved all in and Pierce quickly made the call.

Walthaus tabled his {K-}{J-} for a king-high airball and Pierce tabled his {8-}{8-} for a set to scoop the pot and climb to 237,000 in chips.

The Title Defense Comes to an End for "Riess the Beast"

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

In 2013, Ryan Riess topped a field of 6,352 players to win the Main Event and etch his name in poker history. Riess returned this year seeking back-to-back titles, and he had an impressive showing making it all the way to Day 3. Unfortunately, that is where his title defense will end.

Riess, who began the day with 84,900, had been nursing a short stack for quite some time when he opted to move all in from early position for his last 20,400. With the ESPN cameras rolling, action folded around to Steve Brecher, who made the call from the big blind with the {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. Riess then tabled the {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}.

It was a bad spot for Riess, and he needed a lot of luck to stay alive. The {2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop meant he needed either a four or running hearts, but the latter option disappeared when the {10-Diamonds} appeared on the turn. Riess seemed to know his time was up and watched helplessly as the {Q-Spades} blanked on the river.

"Good luck guys," Riess offered before exiting the tournament to a nice round of applause. Riess then offered some final words on social media: "The dream is over. Good luck to all my friends and piece still in."

Waxman's Got a Stack

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Matt Waxman
Matt Waxman

On a board showing {K-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{K-Hearts}, with quite a lot of chips already in the pot, it was Matt Waxman who moved all in.

The dealer tossed the all-in button towards Waxman, signalling his move, and John Hennigan, his lone opponent on the button, called rather quickly.

"Full house," Waxman announced as he turned over {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades} and Hennigan shook his head as he mucked his cards.

When the dealer started counting out Waxman's stack, for a total of 76,400, Hennigan said, "I thought he bet 50k?"

"No, he moved all in," the dealer said and Hennigan shook his head once more, as he had to pay an extra 26,400 on top of the chips that Waxman had slid forward.

Waxman now sits on a very comfortable stack while Hennigan's lost a lot this level.

Pierce Nails the Trey

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Paul Pierce
Paul Pierce

Paul Pierce three bet a preflop open and a player in late position four-bet shoved. The original raiser moved out of the way and Pierce had his chips in the middle before the cards were in the muck.

Pierce: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Opponent: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}

It wasn't yet known which player was at risk as both had very similar stacks. The dealer fanned out a {3-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{9-Hearts} which led to a fist-pump from Pierce. The turn and river fell --{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds}-- Pierce's three kings were best and the dealer began to count out his stack.

After the count, Pierce had 900 chips fewer than his opponent and was pushed the double up.

Just before the hand played out, former NBA player Earl Barron walked up to Pierce to tell him the news of Barron's recent departure from the Main Event.

Barron was crippled just earlier when his {A-}{K-} got run down by an opponent's {a-}{Q-} and a few hands later got {A-}{10-} in against {a-}{q-}. Barron had flopped best with the {9-}{10-}{j-} flop but the turn was a {q-} and Barron's quest was halted.

Down to just 27,800 in chips, Barry Greenstein moved all in first to act with {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. He would have the bad timing to run into {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} and despite picking up a diamond flush draw on the turn, Greenstein would be eliminated when the board ran out {10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}. He shook hands with his opponent and headed quietly out of the Amazon Room.

Break Time; Isaac Baron Still Soaring, Many Notables Fall

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Paul Pierce still going strong
Paul Pierce still going strong

The second level of Day 3 is now in the bag with roughly another 280 players being eliminated as approximately 1,287 players are remaining, and they are all now heading on a 20-minute break.

Play would begin this level with Isaac Baron continuing his domination of the day as he saw his stack climb to nearly 900,000 after eliminating Andrew Lichtenberger and another player. Lichtenberger was all in holding {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} while the short-stacked player held {J-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. With Baron needing to call a further 115,400 to put Lichtenberger at risk, he eventually would and tabled his {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}. The dealer spread a {J-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{9-Hearts} board to send two players to the rail and Baron further up the leaderboard.

Joining Baron on the upswing included Joe Kuether who made a push a push towards 700,000, Raj Vohra who won a race against ace-king, and Paul Pierce - fresh off his Q&A with PokerNews and the GPI - managed to double up when he turned a straight.

However this level would be one for notable eliminations as the likes of Mark Radoja, Chris Bell, Blair Hinkle, Russell Crane, Billy Baxter, Aaron Massey, Jake Cody, Matt Vengrin and Erica Lindgren hit the rail. Randy Lew made a move with {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} that nearly paid off, Johnny Chan ran into Rocky McNatt's flush and Kevin Pollak couldn't outdraw Patrick Coughlin's aces with {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts}.

Once play ended for the second level of the day, Baron would again be top dog with 810,000 while Raul Mestre made a climb to be a close second with 787,000.
