Andrew Liporace Bags the Day 3 Chip Lead; Play Stopped Just Shy of the Money

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Andrew Liporace leads the way into Day 4
Andrew Liporace leads the way into Day 4

The clock has been paused with 53 minutes remaining on Day 3 as just 746 players remain in the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event.

At the start of the day, 1,864 players began with all eyes on potentially reaching the money late in the final level of play. With an average of 300 players heading to the rail each level, the call was made to pause the tournament as everyone was now located in just one room so that a ESPN could catch the magic of the bubble once it bursts early on Day 4.

Five previous Main Event champions started the day, with Ryan Riess, Johnny Chan, Chris Moneymaker, Robert Varkonyi, and Huck Seed all in contention, but by the day's end only Seed would remain as he bagged 249,000.

NBA superstar and 10-time all star Paul Pierce would be one of the highlights as he attracted plenty of attention from fellow players, the rail, and the ESPN cameras. Unfortunately for Pierce — and potentially the game — he bit the dust when he rivered two pair and shoved holding the {A-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} only to have WSOP.com qualifier Christopher Smith tank-call the river with top two pair.

Although plenty of players held the chip lead throughout the day, it would be Mehrdad Yousefzadeh becoming the first player to reach the million-chip mark, and he had his sights set on bagging the chip lead before finishing the day with 1,124,000. Unfortunately for Yousefzadeh, he would be pipped by a single big blind as Andrew Liporace bagged the top stack with 1,128,000. Raul Mestre (988,500), Jesse Wilke (975,500), Scott Blackman (935,000), and Andoni Larrabe (923,000) rounded out the top of the counts.

Plenty of WSOP bracelet winners and seasoned veterans still remain, but there is one player chasing history as Ronnie Bardah looks to become the first player to record five consecutive WSOP Main Event cashes. One more in-the-money finish would break the tie of four he currently shares with Robert Turner (1991-1994), Bo Sehlstedt (2004-2007), Theodore Park (2005-2008), Chris Overgard (2007-2010), Chris Bjorin (2008-2011), and Christian Harder (2010-2013). Thanks to a late-night double, Bardah ended up bagging 108,500 in his "Strive for Five."

PokerNews' Remko Rinkema spoke with Bardah about his quest during the final break of the night:

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be back at 12 p.m. PT Friday to provide extensive live updates of all the Day 4 action, so make sure to stay tuned to PokerNews.com as we write the path of the future 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event champion!

Esfandiari Exits

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

The action folded round to Joshua Reynolds in the small blind and he moved all in to put 2012 Big One for One Drop Champion Antonio Esfandiari at risk. Esfandiari went deep into the tank for several minutes before making the call for his 88,000 total.

Esfandiari: {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Reynolds: {K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

With Esfandiari in the lead, the dealer spread a {K-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop to give Reynolds the lead. Once the dealer dropped the {K-Hearts} on the turn, Esfandiari's day would be done as the {5-Hearts} completed the board on the river.

As Esfandiari headed towards the exit, the ESPN cameras followed him, and once he realized, Esfandiari headed towards the PokerNews blogging desk before adding, "Well if they're going to film me, I'm going to come join you guys!"

The Truth Denied

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Paul Pierce
Paul Pierce

From the hijack, Michael Binger opened to 9,000 and Paul Pierce made the call in the cutoff before Christopher Smith three-bet the button to 17,000. Binger folded, but Pierce made the call as the dealer spread a {A-Spades}{J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop.

Smith continued for 15,000 and Pierce check-called as the {6-Spades} rolled off on the turn and Pierce tapped the table for a second time. Smith cut out a bet of 35,000, and after a few moments deliberating, Pierce tossed in calling chips.

The dealer dropped the {4-Spades} on the river and Pierce paused, then announced he was all in. Smith asked for a count, and Pierce pushed each of his stacks towards the dealer where it was revealed that the bet was for 129,000 total.

As Smith dove into the tank, Pierce waved off his masseuse, stood up and rubbed his hands together before putting them behind his back as he towered high over Smith waiting for his opponent to come up with a decision. A further few minutes went by with Smith cutting out the necessary calling chips before eventually sliding them in and tabling {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} for top two pair.

Pierce lent down over the table, retrieved his hand, tapped the table with it and then revealed his {A-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a rivered two pair while uttering, "Damn!"

As Pierce shook hands with Smith, the rail chimed in with a few claps before Pierce added, "good run!"

Although Pierce may not have reached the money in this year's Main Event, his $15,333,334 salary from his previous season with the Brooklyn Nets means that for every two-and-a-half minutes of game time last season he made the equivalent of the $18,406 min-cash.

Break Time; Mehrdad Yousefzadeh Hits the Milli Mark, Huck Seed the Last Remaining World Champion

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Mehrdad Yousefzadeh
Mehrdad Yousefzadeh

The fourth and penultimate level of Day 3 has been completed with roughly 855 players remaining. Those players are now on a 20-minute break.

On the resumption of play following dinner break, it would be Mehrdad Yousefzadeh taking a sizeable pot off Phil Ivey to launch himself to roughly 660,000. Although Matthew Haugen would have the biggest flirt of reaching a million in chips when he peaked at 945,000 it would be Yousefzadeh who catapulted himself to 1,050,000 late in the level before heading to break with an impressive 1,049,500.

The other story of the level would be the one that left Huck Seed as the only remaining World Champion in the field following the earlier eliminations of Ryan Riess, Johnny Chan, Robert Varkonyi and most recently Chris Moneymaker. After Moneymaker moved to the action table that included Paul Pierce and Michael Binger, Moneymaker would see the last of his chips enter the {3-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop with his {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} in the lead against Raymond Ezzie's {A-Spades}{K-Spades}. The {J-Spades} on the turn and {4-Clubs} on the river would ensure Moneymaker's exit as Seed became the last Main Event Champion standing.

Speaking of Pierce, the 10-time NBA All-Star would have a heavy rail for the majority of the level but he would float above and below the 200,000-chip mark before ending with 180,000, while the likes of Steve Dannenmann, Marvin Rettenmaier, Aaron Steury, Jason Koon, Bryce Yockey, John Hennigan and Hac Dang weren't as fortunate as they found themselves on the rail.

Joining Yousefzadeh up top on the leaderboard include Haugen (938,000), Raul Mestre (910,500), Andrew Liporace (899,500), Eric Hicks (848,000).

Smith Takes Hennigan's Stack

John Hennigan

Throughout today everything seemed to be going John Hennigan's way, but things turned around quickly and all his chips now belong to Dan Smith.

Smith started the day with just 60,000 chips but as of right now he's sitting on about 567,000. The WPT winner stepped aside from his table for a minute to tell us how he got a hold of Hennigan's chips.

First Hennigan raised from the cutoff to 7,000 and the small blind called after which Smith three-bet from the big blind to 27,000. Hennigan called and on a {K-}{9-}{X-}{X-}{10-} board the action was checked tot he river. Smith bet 81,000 on the river and Hennigan folded.

"We were still talking about that hand when, two hands later, Hennigan raised three seats from the button," Smith said.

Smith three-bet from the button to 22,000 and Hennigan called. The flop came down {6-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Hennigan checked to Smith who bet 25,000. Hennigan called and the turn was the {3-Diamonds} on which Hennigan checked again. Smith bet 50,000 this time around and Hennigan proceeded to move all in for an additional 120,000.

Smith snap-called.

Smith: {4-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Hennigan: {5-Spades}{6-Spades}

Smith had turned the nut straight while Hennigan had a pair and a straight draw. The river was the {10-Diamonds} and Hennigan hit the rail.

Huck Seed; The Only World Champion Still Standing

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Huck Seed
Huck Seed

Following the recent elimination of Chris Moneymaker, 1996 World Champion Huck Seed is the last remaining Main Event winner left in the field.

Although Seed is still a long way from firstly cashing, and then making a run at a second title, he currently sits with 210,000; good for a near-average chip stack.

Moneymaker Flushed Out

Chris Moneymaker - Eliminated
Chris Moneymaker - Eliminated

After a series of bets and raises on a flop of {3-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}, Chris Moneymaker was all in and at risk for 150,000 with {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for a set of eights. Raymond Ezzie had him at risk with {a-Spades}{k-Spades} for an ace-high flush draw, and the turn was the {j-Spades}, giving him said flush.

Moneymaker needed the board to pair in order to survive, but it was not to be for the 2003 Main Event champion as the {4-Clubs} bricked off on the river.

"Good luck, everyone," Moneymaker said, walking away from the table.

Ezzie, who had Moneymaker covered by just 30,000 or so, dragged the pot and is now up to 340,000.

Huck Seed, who won in 1996, is now the only former champion standing.

Over on Phil Ivey's table, we've just spotted Mehrdad Yousefzadeh with a monster stack! A close examination taught us that Yousefzadeh now sits on 1,050,000 chips and that means he's the first player up to over one million chips during this year's Main Event.

Mister Phil Ivey himself sits on around 370,000 chips, and with Yousefzadeh two seats to his left he will have his work cut out for him.
