Phil Ivey Leads To Start Day 3; Multiple Main Event Champions Still Alive

Chip leader Phil Ivey
Chip leader Phil Ivey

Welcome back to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and the 2014 World Series of Poker for Day 3 of the Main Event!

Five days ago the final event of the series kicked off with players partaking in three different Day 1 flights before an additional two Day 2 flights were played. Today, however, the entire field will be combined for the first time. They'll begin spread throughout the Amazon, Brasilia, and Pavilion rooms, but by day's end it is likely that everyone will finally be located in one room as eyes will be locked on reaching the money-paying top 693.

The 6,683-player field has now been trimmed down to just 1,864, and although losing two-thirds of the field may be a tough ask, it will be in the mindsets of many as being able to head home with $18,406 locked up will make tonight's sleep a bit easier.

One of those players with goals much loftier then a min-cash is chip leader and 10-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Ivey who ended Day 1c second in chips before using that momentum — and a handy double elimination with a full house — to motor up the chip counts to be the overall chip leader with 505,000. Timothy Stansifer (481,500), Paul Mestre (477,900), and Thomas Cannuli (407,800) also return to big stacks while notables Joe Kuether (401,200), Isaac Baron (387,200), Brian Townsend (361,700), John Hennigan (342,700), and Martin Jacobson (342,700) are likewise perched high on the leaderboard.

Previous World Champions such as Phil Hellmuth, Joe Hachem, Joe Cada, Jonathan Duhamel, Jamie Gold and Jerry Yang may have already been eliminated, but reigning champion Ryan Riess (84,900), back-to-back champion Johnny Chan (46,600), Robert Varkonyi (33,8000) and Huck Seed (96,500) all still remain while 2003 Champion Chris Moneymaker leads all the former title-holders with an impressive 222,000 in chips.

Day 3 Seating Draw (via WSOP.com)

Bracelet winners, first time players, and seasoned veterans all still remain in this 1,864-player field, but by the time they are done today dreams will be broken, bad beats will be endured, and players' goals will have shifted. Day 3 is always a big day in the Main Event as the pressure with every decision now gets greater and greater as the tournament progresses.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand once play kicks off at 12:00 p.m. (PDT) to provide extensive live updates from Day 3 of the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event as we continue to write the story of the next World Champion!

While we wait for play to begin, check out what Phil Ivey had to say on a break during his strong Day 2c yesterday:

Busquet Slays the Shark

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Humberto Brenes
Humberto Brenes

Action folded around to Costa Rica's Humberto Brenes on the button and he opened big to 6,000. Olivier Busquet was in the small blind and opted to play back with a three-bet to 20,000. The big blind folded and then Brenes stared his opponent down before sliding his stack of 60,000 or so in the middle. Busquet snap-called.

Brenes: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Busquet: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

"I didn't believe you," Brenes told Busquet, who had the best of it. Even so, Brenes was drawing to two live cards. That changed though when the {q-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop delivered Busquet a pair of aces.

"Just to make it interesting," Kevin Pollak said just after the dealer burned and turned the {4-Clubs}, which gave Brenes a flush draw. It certainly was exciting, but Brenes would find no luck on the river as the useless {2-Hearts} peeled off.

Greenwood Knocks Calderaro Out

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
James Calderaro in an earlier event
James Calderaro in an earlier event

World Poker Tour winner James Calderaro has just been knocked out by Lucas Greenwood.

The action started with a raise to 4,000 from middle position by the Canadian player and a Calderaro three-bet from the cutoff to 9,000. It folded back to Greenwood who looked at Calderaro's stack for a few seconds before sliding a big stack of orange chips forward. This was enough to put his opponent all in, and after about 25 seconds Calderaro called off his remaining 40,000 chips.

Calderaro: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Greenwood: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out {Q-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}, and the king on the river ended Calderaro's chances of making it deep in this year's Main Event.

"Play Bad and Win is My Strategy"; Von Kriegenbergh Now Over 300K

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Taylor von Kreigenbergh
Taylor von Kreigenbergh

Catching the action on the turn with the board reading {3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-Hearts}, a healthy pot was brewing between Thomas Popov and Taylor von Kriegenbergh.

Popov had bet 58,000 — effectively all in since he left just a 1,000-denomination chip to cap his cards — and von Kriegenbergh was deep into the tank. Several minutes went by before von Kriegenbergh pushed out a stack of orange 5,000-denomination chips and Popov tossed in his last chip to call all in.

Popov: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Von Kriegenbergh: {A-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}

With Popov in the lead with his overpair and needing to fade a five, four, or ace, the dealer would smack the {A-Hearts} on the river to send Popov off to the rail in a hurry as von Kriegenbergh was pushed the pot to send him to over 300,000.

As von Kriegenbergh began raking in the pot, he discussed the hand a little with the players around him before concluding, "play bad and win is my strategy!"

Pierce Doubles Early

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Paul Pierce
Paul Pierce

Gary Lent opened for 3,600 under the gun, and Paul Pierce called from the next spot. Action folded to the cutoff, who came along, and the flop came {10-Hearts}{6-Spades}{q-Clubs}. Lent bet 8,500, and Pierce tossed out a min-raise. The cutoff folded, and Lent made the call. On the {5-Clubs} turn, Lent checked and Pierce immediately slid his whole stack in. The wager was 16,300.

"Can you spread the pot please?" Lent asked. "I hope I have outs."

Lent decided to call, and he turned over {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a pair and a flush draw, but Pierce had his pair dominated with {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}. Pierce faded the clubs and tens as a {5-Diamonds} arrived on the river, and has earned an early double-up here on Day 3.

Set Over Set Propels Baron to the Top

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Isaac Baron (from Day 2c)
Isaac Baron (from Day 2c)

As recapped to us by Isaac Baron...

Anthony Denicco opened from middle position, the player on the button called, and Baron called from the big blind. The flop came down {J-}{6-}{2-} and Baron checked to Denicco who bet. The player on the button called before Baron check-raised. Denicco reraised, the player on the button folded, Baron reraised back, and Denicco soon wound up all in for about 235,000 with {2-}{2-} for bottom set.

Baron, though, tabled {6-}{6-} for middle set, and the better hand held up to eliminate Denicco and give Baron the chip lead.

Aces For Vengrin, Shanin Jumps to Second Place

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Matt Vengrin
Matt Vengrin

We caught the action on the river with a {6-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} board showing and about 70,000 chips already in the pot. The action was on Munir Shahin who bet 37,000 after Matt Vengrin had checked to him.

"Well, this really sucks," Vengrin sighed as he was faced with a big decision. "Will you show me if I fold?" Vengrin asked his opponent.

"I can't promise anything," Shahin replied with a smile.

"Any advice, since I can't phone a friend?" Vengrin asked, but Shahin had nothing to offer.

"What do you think I have?" Vengrin continued after a while, as the clock kept ticking.

"I don't know man, I'm not a very good player like you," Shahin responded.

"Oh stop it," Vengrin said, "Now you're just trying to flatter me."

"Sorry for taking so long guys, but this is a real decision and I will show my hand either way," Vengrin continued as he had taken well over five minutes.

Eventually Vengrin tossed in the call and Shahin turned over {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for a flopped set. Vengrin showed his {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} and his hand ended up in the muck.

Break Time; Nearly 300 Players Eliminated, Isaac Baron Takes Chip Lead

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Isaac Baron
Isaac Baron

The first level of Day 3 has come and gone here in the Main Event with close to 300 players being eliminated in two hours of play. Approximately 1,566 players are remaining, and they are all now heading on a 20-minute break.

Once the cards hit the air it would be a slow first few orbits as players settled in for the day. Some short stacks doubled and were eliminated while some of the chip leaders began where they left off. WPT Champion Taylor von Kriegenbergh would soar up the leaderboard when he called an all-in holding second pair and a straight draw on the turn and got the on the river. NBA Superstar Paul Pierce then found a double holding {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} on a {10-Hearts}{6-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{5-Clubs} against {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} while a big pot for Isaac Baron saw a new chip leader emerge.

On a {J-}{6-}{2-} board, Baron and his opponent Anthony Denicco endured a raising war before Denicco was all in holding {2-}{2-} against Baron's {6-}{6-}. There would be no one-outer on the turn and river as Baron soared up to 674,000 in chips as Denicco hit the rail.

Joining Denicco on the rail included the likes of Dan Kelly, Humberto Brenes, James Calderaro, Nick DiVella, Nate Meyvis, Theo Jorgensen, and Daniel Negreanu. The 2013 WSOP Player of the Year chipped up early today, but then called a huge bet with {A-}{Q-} on a queen-high board only to run into Jeffrey Chang's {K-}{K-}. Negreanu would then commit the remainder of his chips with two pair but would run into Chang's flopped flush to hit the rail just short of break.

As play ended for the level, it would be Baron still on top with 695,000 in chips, but start-of-day chip leader Phil Ivey — who made quads earlier — has seen his stack climb to 600,000 while Munir Shahin, Raul Mestre, Steve Tripp and Michael Aron are all among the top few counts as well.

Speaking of Aron, he knocked out Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué late yesterday, as he explained to our Caitlin Howe afterwards — take a look:

Isaac Baron Is Running "Absurd"

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Isaac Baron
Isaac Baron

It was folded to a short-stacked player in the hijack who moved all in for 20,900. Andrew Lichtenberger was one seat to his left and made the call. Isaac Baron was another spot over and he raised it to 48,900. The blinds folded and it was back on Lichtenberger who tanked for two minutes before quietly announcing he was all in.

Baron didn't snap-call, but he did ask the dealer for a count. After pulling in 20,900 apiece for the main pot, and 28,000 apiece additional for the side pot, it was determined that Lichtenberger had moved all in for an additional 115,900. Now it was Baron's turn to tank. He started muttering to himself and took a quick peek back at his cards, shaking his head as he leaned slightly back in his chair.

"115,900 more right?" he asked.

"That's correct," answered the dealer.

Baron flung his hand in frustration towards the center of the table several times and then announced a call. The hands were turned over:

Short-Stacked Player: {J-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Lichtenberger: {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
Baron: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

Lichtenberger was in great shape to score a huge double-up with his queens. The flop changed nothing as it came {J-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}. But the turn was a dagger for Lichtenberger's tournament life... the {A-Hearts}. The river bricked out — the {9-Hearts} — and just like that Lichtenberger and the short-stacked player were both eliminated at the hands of the current tournament chip leader. Baron moved up to 875,000, and after the hand all he could say was "absurd."

You Are All in Danger

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Scott Palmer
Scott Palmer

Former online poker phenom Scott 'urnotindanger' Palmer has just raked in another big pot to put him over the 400,000-chip mark.

We caught the action on the turn with the board showing {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} when Palmer bet 18,500 from the small blind. One of the biggest stack at the start of the day, John Sacha, raised to 34,500, but the dealer instructed him he had to make it at least 37,000.

Sacha put in the right amount of chips and Palmer did not waste much time before making the the call.

On the river the {3-Clubs} popped up and Palmer checked. Sacha bet 53,800 and Palmer called quickly. Sacha showed {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and his mucked was mucked, as Palmer showed {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for a flopped set.
