Sam Higgs Holds Commanding Lead Among Final Six Players

Nível 16 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Sam Higgs

The halfway tournament of the 2014 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific — Event #5 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha – saw seven players take advantage of the late registration heading into Day 2, which along with the 73 players from Day 1 brought the total field to 80 players. That created a prize pool of AU$376,000 that was reserved for the top eight finishers.

With the late entrants, 26 players began Day 2, but after five and a half levels 20 of them had hit the rail. Leading the final table of six with a commanding 667,000 is Sam Higgs, but others with their eyes firmly fixed on the AU$127,843 first-place prize are Jonathan Duhamel, Jeff Rossiter, Mike Watson, Ismael Bojang and Jamie Pickering.

Dan Heimiller began the day on the extreme short stack, so it was no surprise to see him fall on one of the first hands of the day. One level later, an Australian legend joined him on the rail. It happened when Geoffrey Mooney opened the action with a raise to 4,200 and got called by Richard Ashby on the button as well as Billy “The Croc” Argyros in the small blind and John Dalessandri in the big blind. They all checked down the {2-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} flop and the action was checked to Ashby on the {5-Hearts} turn.

The Brit bet 15,000 into a pot of 16,800 and Argyros eventually called all in for his last 4,900 whereas all other opponents folded.

Argyros: {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} {4-Clubs}
Ashby: {4-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {3-Spades}

The {2-Spades} on the river completed the board and Argyros packed his belongings.

As the day wore on he was joined on the rail by the likes of former WSOP Main Event winners Ryan Riess and Greg Merson, who were actually eliminated on the same hand; reigning WSOP APAC champ Daniel Negreanu; 2 Months, 2 Million star Brian Roberts; and Australian Poker Hall of Famer Jason Gray, who exited in 11th place just one day after finishing runner-up to Jeff Lisandro in Event #3 AU$1,650 pot-limit Omaha.

With nine players remaining, the bubble was in full effect, though it didn’t take long to burst. In Level 15 (1,500/3,000) Nathan Pan limped from the hijack and then called when Higgs raised to 10,000 from the cutoff. Both players checked the {a-Spades}{5-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} flop, and then Pan bet 24,500 on the {7-Hearts} turn. Higgs raised it and Pan called off what little he had left.

Pan: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Higgs: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs}

Both players had flopped trips, but Pan had kicker issues. They didn't get resolved either as the {2-Diamonds} blanked on the river. With that, Pan finished as the bubble boy in ninth place while the remaining eight players are guaranteed a minimum AU$15,021 payday.

After the eliminations of Richard Johnston (8th – AU$15,021) and Kahle Burns (7th – AU$17,386), the players bagged and tagged for the night so the final six players could return for the live-streamed final table on Thursday.

Here’s a look at the 2014 WSOP APAC Event #5 final table:

SeatPlayerCount
1Mike Watson145,000
2Ismael Bojang44,000
3Sam Higgs667,000
4Jeff Rossiter63,500
5Jonathan Duhamel153,000
6Jamie Pickering99,500

The finalists will return at 12:10 p.m. local time on Thursday to play down to a winner, and of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action from the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.

Kahle Burns Eliminated in 7th Place (AU$17,386)

Kahle Burns - 7th Place
Kahle Burns - 7th Place

From the cutoff seat, Jonathan Duhamel raised to 10,000. Jamie Pickering called on the button, and then Kahle Burns reraised all in for 55,000 from the small blind. Mike Watson reraised the pot from the big blind, and that knocked Duhamel and Pickering out of the way.

Burns' tournament life was hanging in the balance as he held the {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}{8-Hearts}{2-Clubs} with five community cards to come. He would need those community cards, too, as Watson held the better {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}.

The {Q-Spades}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{7-Hearts} board gave Watson the pot and sent Burns out the door in seventh place, earning AU$17,386.

With that, the final six players are wrapping up play for the night, and a recap will be posted shortly.

Double for Duhamel Through Burns

Jonathan Duhamel

On the button, 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel raised to 10,000 to start the action. Kahle Burns reraised the pot to 32,000 from the big blind, and then Duhamel reraised all in for 82,500. Burns called with the {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}, and Duhamel was at risk with the {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}.

The flop, turn, and river ran out {7-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{3-Spades}{K-Diamonds}, and Duhamel doubled up to leave Burns with 55,000 in chips.

Richard Johnston Eliminated in 8th Place (AU$15,021)

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Richard Johnston
Richard Johnston

Sam Higgs limped from middle position, and that inspired Richard Johnston to three-bet to 13,500 from late position. Mike Watson flatted from the big blind, Higgs came along, and three players saw a flop of {6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. Johnston checked, Watson bet 30,000, and Higgs got out of the way. Johnston called off his last 10,000 or so and the cards were turned on their backs.

Johnston: {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{k-Spades}
Watson: {9-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{q-Spades}

The {7-Diamonds} turn gave Watson a straight, and that meant Johnston needed either an eight or seven on the river to stay alive. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {J-Hearts}. Johnston missed and had to settle for eighth place and AU$15,021 in prize money.

Pan Bubbles Event #5: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Nathan Pan
Nathan Pan

It didn't take long for the bubble to burst here in Event #5 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, and it happened over the course of back-to-back hands.

In the first, four players limped to see a flop of {6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, and then three checks saw Sam Higgs bet 10,000. Only Nathan Pan called and then he check-called a bet of 17,000 on the {10-Clubs} turn. Both players proceeded to check the {J-Diamonds} river, and Higgs tabled the {q-Clubs}{9-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for a straight. Pan mucked.

In the next hand, Pan limped from the hijack and then called when Higgs raised to 10,000 from the cutoff. Both players checked the {a-Spades}{5-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} flop, and then Pan bet 24,500 on the {7-Hearts} turn. Higgs raised it and Pan called off what little he had left.

Pan: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Higgs: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs}

Both players had flopped trips, but Pan had kicker issues. They didn't get resolved either as the {2-Diamonds} blanked on the river. With that, Pan finished as the bubble boy in ninth place while the remaining eight players are guaranteed a minimum AU$15,021 payday.

Wan Exits as the Penultimate Bubble Boy

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Vincent Wan
Vincent Wan

Sam Higgs opened for 8,000 under the gun only to have Vincent Wan three-bet to 28,500 from the cutoff. Nathan Pan flatted from the big blind, Higgs got out of the way, and it was heads-up action to the {2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} flop.

Pan checked, Wan moved all in for approximately 25,000, and Pan snap-called.

Pan: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Wan: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}{2-Spades}{3-Diamonds}

Pan had flopped top set to pull ahead of Wan's aces, and it held as the {6-Diamonds} appeared on the turn followed by the {6-Clubs} on the river. Wan exited empty handed in 10th place, which means the final nine players will combine to a single table to play out the money bubble.

Watson Eliminates an Australian Poker Hall of Famer

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante
Jason Gray
Jason Gray

A preflop raising war resulted in Mike Watson and Jason Gray getting all the chips in the middle. The latter, who finished runner-up to Jeff Lisandro yesterday in Event #2 AU$1,650 Pot-Limit Omaha, was te player at risk.

Gray: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Watson: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

As we've seen so many times today it was an aces-versus-kings situation, and like in most of those cases, the aces held after the board ran out {6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Well actually both players made a flush, but of course Watson's ace-high flush was best.

Negreanu Done in by Duhamel

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante
Daniel Negreanu in earlier WSOP APAC action.
Daniel Negreanu in earlier WSOP APAC action.

Jonathan Duhamel opened with a raise from the button and Daniel Negreanu and Richard Ashby called from the small and big blinds respectively. The {j-}{8-}{4-} flop saw Negreanu lead out for 9,000, Ashby folded, and Duhamel called to see a {5-} turn.

Negreanu bet again, this time 24,000, and his fellow Canadian came along to see a {Q-} completed the board on the river. Negreanu slowed down with a check, but called off when Duhamel shoved.

Negreanu showed {q-}{q-}{x-}{x-} for a rivered set, but it was no good as Duhamel had made a straight with {10-}{9-}{k-}{7-}.

Negreanu came close to some precious WSOP POY points, but not close enough. He immediately jumped into Event #6 AU$1,650 8-Game Dealer's Choice, which is taking place across the room.

Johnston Knocks Out Riess and Merson

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Greg Merson
Greg Merson

A preflop raising war saw several raise the pot and Richard Johnston, Greg Merson as well as Ryan Riess were all in. Riess was the short stack whereas Merson had around 75,000 in chips and Johnston had them both covered with more than 90,000 in chips.

Riess: {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {K-Spades}
Merson: {A-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}
Johnston: {A-Spades} {A-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds}

Johnston was ahead preflop and also picked up an additional flush draw on the {3-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} flop. The {8-Clubs} on the turn changed nothing and the {J-Hearts} river reduced the field to 14.

Dalessandri & Mooney Fall to Bring About Two-Table Redraw

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Geoffrey Mooney
Geoffrey Mooney

We missed the elimination of John Dalessandri, but we do know he was ousted after a bad beat by Sam Higgs. Dalessandri got his chips in holding {a-}{a-}{x-}{x-} and was well out in front of Higgs' {k-}{k-}{7-}{4-}; however, the latter wound up making a straight with his low cards, and that was all she wrote for Dalessandri.

Not long after, Geoffrey Mooney limped from the button and the small blind did the same. Higgs then exercised his option from the big with a raise, Mooney called, and the small blind folded. When the flop came down {4-Spades}{k-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, Higgs bet 7,000, Mooney called, and the {8-Hearts} appeared on the turn.

This time Higgs checked, and Mooney fired out a big bet. Higgs check-raised the pot and Mooney called off to created a pot well over 100K.

Mooney: {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Higgs: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}

Mooney had turned trips, but he was drawing dead as Higgs held a full house. The meaningless {9-Hearts} was put out on the river, and then Mooney took his leave from the tournament. With that, the field is down to the final 16 players and will redraw down to two tables.
