Triton Super High Roller Series Montenegro HK$1,000,000 Main Event Set to Start

Manig Loeser - 2017 Triton Super High Roller Series Montenegro Winner

With the Triton Super High Roller HK$250,000 (~$31,850) 6-Max Event aperitif already served and Triton Co-founder Richard Yong finally winning himself some silverware it’s time to dish up the main course.

The HK$1-million (~$127,390) 2018 Triton Super High Roller Series Montenegro Main Event will be starting at 1pm CET and with some of poker’s best and brightest in attendance the field looks set to be a star-studded one.

With previous Triton Series events attracting some of the biggest names on the international circuit and past winners including Germany’s Manig Loeser, Fedor Holz (twice), and Koray Aldemir, the USA’s Dan ‘jungleman12’ Cates, Daniel Colman, and John Juanda and Malaysia’s Wai Kin Yong the stage is set for a thrilling three days of high-octane action.

It was Loeser who emerged victorious in this very event a little over 10-months ago, defeating Richard Yong heads-up to take the HK$16,877,600 (~$2,161,520) first prize. While the reigning champion is returning to defend his title, the field is also full of previous winners, with Aldemir, Cates and Wai Kin Yong all set to play, along with Richard Yong, who will be keen to become the first player to win both the 6-Max and Main Event in a single series.

In addition to all these past champions, a slew of big names have made the trip over to the magnificent Maestral Resort and Casino, located in the heart of the Balkans by the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Current GPI #1 Stephen Chidwick, the first UK player ever to hold this much-vaunted spot, is in attendance, as is high stakes crusher Steve O’Dwyer. Chidwick is currently in the midst of enjoying his best tournament year to date and will be keen to make another big score, especially after coming up short in the 6-Max and departing on the bubble. O’Dwyer too will want to win his first Triton title, having come within touching distance in the Six-Max but losing out to Richard Yong.

Other big names in attendance include the legendary Phil Ivey, who won his first Triton SHR title in the Short Deck Ante Only just two days prior for US$604,992, and Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan and with more players expected to be flying in to play, the stage is set for an epic tournament.

Running 15-17 May the three-day Main Event boasts multiple re-entry until the end of level 10 – before 1pm CET on Wednesday 16 May on Day 2 – there is certainly going to be some fantastic high stakes action on display over the next few days.

Its mission is to give back to society through charitable contributions by hosting high-end, high-stakes poker tournaments.

Since hosting their inaugural event in 2016, the US$200,000 No Limit Hold’em Triton Super High Roller, held at the Solaire Resort & Casino in Paranaque City, Manila, Philippines – won by German wunderkind Fedor Holz – the Triton Super High Roller Series is well on the way to establishing itself as a proving ground for some of the game’s top professionals.

With professionally run, high stakes poker tournaments that attract a mix of affluent recreational players and some of the international poker circuits top professionals, the tour is a perfect stage for participants to showcase their skills at the highest level.

Previous winners of Triton Poker events include some of the games’ biggest names with Fedor Holz, Daniel ‘Jungleman' Cates, Koray Aldemir, Stefan Schillhabel, Dan Colman and John Juanda just some of the past champions.

Currently, both Fedor Holz and Wai King Yong are tied for the number of Triton titles, both holding two apiece and so far the Triton Super High Roller Series has awarded a monstrous USD45,725,824 in prize money (not including this Montenegro Event), so let’s take a look at the Series’ History to-date:

Haxton Chips Up Through Thomas

Over on the outer table, Julian Thomas defended his big blind against a raise to 3,100 by Isaac Haxton just as the blinds had gone up and the flop fell {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Both players checked before Thomas bet the {6-Spades} turn for 15,000, Haxton called. On the {A-Clubs} river, Thomas bet 38,000 and Haxton used one of his time bank extensions.

With two seconds to spare, Haxton announced the call and Thomas asked "is that enough?" while rolling over the {J-Clubs} only. Haxton shook his hand and exposed the {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} while Paul Phua insisted to also reveal the second card of Thomas, which was the {Q-Spades}. Thomas was somewhat confused but said "okay, whatever."

The new feature table after the break will include defending champion Manig Loeser, Richard Yong, Stefan Schillhabel, Stephen Chidwick, Julian Thomas and Paul Phua.

In the meanwhile, the stream has caught up on a big pot between Dominik Nitsche and Xuan Tan from the last level. Nitsche had raised to 3,500 with the {Q-Spades}{J-Hearts} on the button and Tan three-bet to 12,000 in the big blind with {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}. From then on a big pot emerged to the {10-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} river, as Nitsche raised the flop bet and fired 45,000 on he turn to pick up a call by Tan.

Ultimately, Nitsche bet 80,000 into a pot of around 170,000 with just 56,000 behind on the river and Tan used one time bank extension and folded. The other players at the table asked Nitsche to show a card and he flashed the queen.

Dan Cates on ‘Winning all the Money’ and Plans for the WSOP

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Dan Cates
Dan Cates

It’s tough to be unhappy when you have just won over $400,000 in a poker tournament, but Dan ‘jungleman12” Cates looked less than thrilled to finish runner-up to poker legend Phil Ivey in the recent Triton Super High Roller Series Montenegro Short Deck Ante Only tournament.

However, once the Florida native had some time to rest and reflect he was more than happy to talk about this exciting new variant of the game that is taking the high stakes poker world by storm and his plans for the World Series of Poker with PokerNews presenter Laura Cornelius.

“It was definitely a good day overall, I think that I’m happy with my performance in the tournament, though I did play a couple of hands badly towards the end,” said Cates as he plugged away on an online game for “reasonably high” stakes on an anonymous Chinese poker App.

“I can’t really complain… if I’m gonna complain about second place then I’m gonna be complaining an awful lot. I don’t understand these people who complain when they get second place. I mean, there were 60 people that busted before me,’ said an upbeat Cates.

While Cates was disappointed with the fact he was unable to convert his chip lead into victory, his opponent is widely regarded as one of the game’s greats, though Cates still believes he is a favorite, at least when it comes to the Short Deck Ante Only version of the game.

“I’d be happy to play him [Ivey] some more, lets put it that way. I mean we can play the same stakes too.”

Dan Cates - Phil Ivey Heads Up
Dan Cates and Phil Ivey battle heads-up in the Triton Super High Roller Short Deck Ante Only Event

While every poker player thinks they are better than the vast majority of their opposition, the truly great ones also acknowledge when they get outplayed, and learn from their mistakes.

"From my experience, I think that I’m better than him at this game [Short Deck Ante Only] but that day he seemed to play pretty well I’d say. That day I think he played maybe a little bit better than me but I think he had more cards than me. Like I had nothing a lot and was just bluffing all these dumb spots. I think that he played better than me that day for sure, at least heads-up,” said Cates.

That runner-up finish brings Cates’ total live tournament winnings up to over $6-million and put him in 85th place on the United States All Time Money List, not bad at all for a player widely considered to be an online professional. But then, the boundaries in the modern game have changed considerably since the 2003 poker boom and the modern day poker professional, at least the most successful ones, are well versed in playing a multitude of games, both on and offline. So what is Cate’s favorite game?

“I still like full deck because it’s the game that I think has the most skill in it. There’s more of this element of, you can bet and you can have nothing and the guy just has to decide if you are bluffing or not. Whereas it’s not even really true in this game [NLHE] necessarily…"

"In almost all the other games there is a lot of situations where you just have to have certain things a lot of the time, but in No Limit, you can sometimes even win and you don’t have to have anything, you can just bluff every hand… There are just more options in No Limit, which I like. It’s more fun,” stated Cates.

Of course, Cates is still killing it online too, and is, at least according to HighstakesDB, the third most successful online player in the history of the game, with a massive $11,166,681 in tracked online winnings, over $10-million of which has come at the cash tables under both his ‘jungleman12’ and his ‘w00ki3z’ pseudonyms.

This brings his total poker winnings to an eye-watering $17,255,715 – and this is probably just the tip of the iceberg, as live cash game winnings are untracked.

Interestingly, Cates sits just above Phil Ivey in online poker winnings, with his most recent tournament opponent sitting on $10,441,962 in online earnings.

Cates continues to prove why he is widely considered one of the best high stakes poker players in the business and, according to fellow pro Jason Koon, is a lot more philosophical about both life and poker at present.

Dan Cates - Jason Koon
Dan Cates (left) and fellow pro Jason Koon (right)

"I guess it’s true I’m probably calmer because firstly I’ve been to the gym and I’m exhausted, so there’s that, secondly I’ve just been winning all the money lately, I’m just running out of this world, like ridiculous."

That sounds like a good combination of run good and confidence - an ideal place to be when you consider the fact Cates will be heading to the upcoming World Series of Poker with a ton of self-belief in his poker abilities.

“Right now I’m traveling a lot, I have an address in Las Vegas, I have a condo in Las Vegas, but I’m rarely there. I’m going to go there at the end of the World Series,” said Cates when asked about his plans.

“I’ll be playing the mixed games, the big bet mix. Probably whatever the biggest games that will be running I’ll be playing pretty much, that’s always been the case.”

High stakes grinders heading to the WSOP beware, the jungle is a dangerous place for the unwary and the arid climate of the Las Vegas desert could well prove to be a more humid and sweaty place than many pros realize, especially if they draw Cates at their table.

Near Triple Up for Cates; Big Double for Schillhabel

On the three-way flop of {9-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts}, Patrik Antonius bet 25,000 into Dan Cates and Stephen Chidwick and the former moved all in for just 46,100, whilc Chidwick moved all in over the top. Antonius folded and said in table chat he had pocket queens.

Dan Cates: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Stephen Chidwick: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

The {9-Clubs} turn and {10-Clubs} river further improved Cates to a full house and he nearly tripled up. Paul Phua double checked with Antonius whether or not he really folded queens and the Finn replied "I am a tight player."

One table over, a massive double for Stefan Schillhabel took place while Jason Koon's cards were already in the muck. Schillhabel had doubled for massive 269,900 with the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} on a board of {A-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and it was confirmed by Steffen Sontheimer as to what happened.

According to Sontheimer, Mikhail Smirnov had raised, Schillhabel three-bet and Koon cold four-bet with pocket queens out of the big blind. Smirnov folded and Schillhabel five-bet jammed to win a big flip on his second bullet.
