The Wait Is Finally Over...The Second-Ever PSPC Kicks Off Today at 12 p.m. ET

PokerStars Players NL Hold'em Championship
PokerStars Players NL Hold'em Championship

After four long years, the wait is finally over as the 2023 PokerStars Players No Limit Hold'Em Championship (PSPC) gets underway today at the Baha Mar Resort at 12 p.m. ET.

Players from each corner of the globe have made the trip to Nassau, The Bahamas to try and emulate the success of PokerStars Ambassador Ramon Colillas, who took down the inaugural PSPC back in 2019 for a life-changing payday of $5.1 million.

Colillas, who entered the first edition of the PSPC after bagging a coveted Platinum Pass, topped the record-breaking 1,039-player field to etch his name in poker's history books.

Often, a $25K buy-in event is reserved for poker's high rollers, but with over 400 Platinum Pass winners attending, there will be huge diversity within the playing field. Several players will be living the dream in what is a once-in-a-lifetime event for some.

Another reason why the PSPC is so extraordinary is that it is one of the few major events that operates as a freezeout. The playing field will be levelled out regardless of bankroll size and will undoubtedly create some moments that will be remembered for years to come.

The PSPC lasts for five days and only has one Day 1 flight, however, late registration is open until the start of Day 2. Those who enter the PSPC will receive a starting stack of 60,000 and will need to navigate the opening eight levels to bag and tag for Day 2. As mentioned, players will only be permitted one entry, and if they bust they will need to watch the tournament play out from the sidelines.

And while there is no guarantee for the PSPC, more than $14 million already sits in the prize pool. Payouts will be confirmed on Day 2 but it is already expected that the first-place prize will again be around the $5 million mark.

The PSPC will also be live-streamed on the PokerStars YouTube and Twitch channels from the get-go.

PokerNews spoke with PokerStars presenter and commentator James Hartigan, who said that he was "incredibly excited" to be heading back to the Caribbean.

"There are so many people who are effectively freerolling in a $25,000 buy-in tournament! They might never have dreamt of playing in a live event anywhere near that buy-in, but they've been given this amazing opportunity through PokerStars."

PokerNews picked up the action on a heads-up pot between Lex Veldhuis and Connor Armstrong. Veldhuis was the first to act from the small blind on a completed board of {9-Hearts}{q-Spades}{k-Spades}{a-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and he bet 2,100.

Armstrong then put in a big raise to 13,000 and Velduis quickly threw in a call chip.

Unfortunately for Veldhuis, Armstrong turned over {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for the nut flush while he disgustedly showed {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for the second nut flush.

Kitty Kuo & Aleks Ponakovs

Kitty Kuo raised it up from the cutoff and Aleksejs Ponakovs three-bet to 1,600 on the button. Kuo called and the dealer fanned the flop of {7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. Kuo checked to Ponakovs who bet 1,300 and Kuo check-raised to 4,000. Ponakovs called and the {3-Clubs} landed on the turn.

Kuo fired out another bet of 9,000 and Ponakovs deliberated before just calling. The {8-Spades} completed the board and Kuo splashed in a bet of 14,000. Ponakovs snap-called and Kuo turned over {q-Spades}{9-Spades} for a rivered straight. Ponakovs mucked his hand and Kuo raked in a big pot in the first level.

Papazian Third to Bust in Massive Cooler

Nível 2 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Alexandru Papazian
Alexandru Papazian

Alexandru Papazian and PokerStars Platinum Pass Winner Hugo Rodilla were involved in a heads-up pot and faced a board of {j-Spades}{k-Hearts}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Papazian was first to act from the small blind and he bet out 7,400 into the pot of 10,000.

Rodilla made the call from under the gun and the two went to the river {5-Clubs}. Papazian fired again for 18,200, which left him with a 25,000 chip behind.

After a few moments, Rodilla then moved all in, covering Papazian, and now he was the one under pressure.

Papazian just chuckled to himself, checked his cards once more, and shook his head as he threw in his last chip. He then flipped over {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} for a full house, jacks full of fives, but then Rodilla tabled his hand of {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for an even bigger full house to win the pot.

The table collectively groaned as they saw what a beat that was, and Papazian was sent to the rail, the third thus far.

Nível 2 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Ramon Colillas
Ramon Colillas

On the feature table, David Kaye raised from under the gun with {2-Spades}{2-Hearts} and defending champion Ramon Colillas caled with {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} in the next position. Jason Strasser {j-Hearts}{8-Clubs} defended his big blind and the flop came {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, giving Kaye quads, and it checked through to Colillas.

He bet 1,000 and Strasser folded. Kaye called and the turn was the {5-Clubs}.

Kaye checked again and Colillas bet 2,400. Kaye called and the river {10-Clubs} gave Colillas two pair. Kaye checked for the third time and the 2019 PSPC champion bet 4,500.

Kaye check-raised and got a fold from Colillas.

Little's Kings Crack Iyer's Aces

Nível 2 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Rishva Iyer
Rishva Iyer

Platinum Pass winner Rishva Iyer raised on the button and was quickly facing a three-bet from Jonathan Little in the big blind to 3,000 chips.

Iyer slid in a four-bet of 8,000, to which Little responded by announcing all-in. Iyer called instantly and the hands were turned up.

Jonathan Little: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Rishva Iyer: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Little was showing a king in the window on the {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop, while Iyer could not connect on the {6-Clubs} turn or {2-Diamonds} river. She wished everyone good luck before being informed that she covered Little's stack, leaving her with just over 20 big blinds heading into the break.

The 24-year-old poker player from Philadelphia won her Platinum Pass via a Road to PSPC women’s event at Live! Casino Pennsylvania.
