Tran, Moorman Ascend to Top of Counts on Day 1 of PokerStars Players Championship

Nível 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Chris Moorman
Chris Moorman

The long-awaited 2023 PokerStars Players No-Limit Hold'em Championship in The Bahamas kicked off in specular fashion today and attracted 1,005 runners, 678 of whom found bags after eight one-hour levels of play. Leading the way are Britain's Chris Moorman and America's Tony Tran who tied for the chip lead with 356,000, followed by fellow big stacks Josh Arieh (312,500), Bastian Hess (295,000) and Martin Zamani (287,000).

Moorman is known as one of the biggest online crushers of all time but has $6.5 million in Hendon Mob-reported earnings to prove he's no stranger to success in the live realm. The Brit will look to add seven figures to his lifetime earnings if he can use his big stack to make a deep run in the PSPC.

There were no shortage of big names that made it to the end of Day 1, including European Poker Tour (EPT) champions like Roberto Romanello and Martin Jacobson, as well as Jacobson's fellow World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champs Chris Moneymaker, Ryan Riess, Espen Jorstad, Greg Raymer and Scott Blumstein and PokerStars Pros Sam Grafton, Andre Akkari, Arlie Shaban, Benjamin Spragg, Lali Tournier and Alejandro Lococo, who won a big pot in one of the final hands of the night to bag a stack of 204,000.

Defending champion Ramon Colillas, who took down the 2019 PSPC for $5.1 million after spinning up a Platinum Pass freeroll, is still alive after a day battling at a table that included chess pro Alexandra Botez. The popular streamer, who has played poker on Hustler Casino Live and other streams, held her own among the poker pros on the feature table and ended the night with 39,000.

Plenty of Platinum Pass winners are looking to follow in Colillas' footsteps by taking down the Players Championship. Among the Platinum Pass winners who bagged are Chad McVean, Alexander Herrmann, Dinesh Alt, Xavier Robert Ros and Antonio Ramon Munoz.

Day 1 Action

The energy inside the Baha Mar Resort convention center was palpable as Bruce Buffer kicked things off with his unmistakable "Shuffle up and deal!" announcement.

It didn't take long for chips to exchange hands and seats to open up as plenty of notable hands made up the first few hours of play.

Alexandru Papazian was one of the first players out after the Romanian grinder suffered a massive cooler in the first few minutes of play. Papazian held pocket jacks and wound up with jacks full on the river, only to find himself against the kings full of Platinum Pass winner Hugo Rodilla, who held pocket kings to deliver a sneaky and sickening beat to Papazian. PokerNews wrote about that hand and others, which you can read about here.

Moneymaker delivered a comparably brutal beat to Sergio Coutinho when the 2003 Main Event champ held the nut flush against Coutinho's second nut flush.

Other players who made early exits include PokerStars Ambassador Fintan Hand, Robbi Jade Lew, Kevin Rabichow, Nick Petrangelo and 2019 PCA champ Chino Rheem.

The always-mouthy Shaun Deeb was eliminated shortly before dinner break just a few hands after telling those at the table that they play "so bad" as Platinum Pass winner Lucas Pignay rivered a gutshot straight to have the last laugh.

PokerStars' Lex Veldhuis made it to the final level of the day before he three-bet jammed with ace-jack only for Lauro Artmann to wake up behind him with Big Slick. Veldhuis was left with crumbs and lost it on the next hand when fellow PokerStars team member Shaban scored a double knockout with pocket queens against the jacks of Ante Jukic and king-ten of Veldhuis.

Day 2 will kick off at noon local time with Level 9, blinds of 1,000/1,500/1,500. There's still time to buy into the event with a 60,000-chip starting stack as late registration will remain open until the start of Level 11.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team is on-site here in Nassau and ready to bring all the updates ahead of the next Players Champion being crowned.

Full chip counts and recap to follow.

Lococo Doesn't Show on Last Hand

Nível 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Alejandro Lococo
Alejandro Lococo

In the last hand of the night, Scott Margereson opened to 3,500 but was then three-bet by Alejandro Lococo to his left.

He was then, in turn, four-bet to 18,000 by Matas Cimbolas to HIS left.

Action folded back around to Lococo who made the call, and the two went heads-up to a flop of {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}.

Lococo check-called a continuation bet of 8,000 from Cimbolas and went to the {10-Diamonds} turn. The action went check-check and the foes saw the {3-Clubs} on the river.

Lococo led out for a big bet of 60,000, which sent Cimbolas into the tank. After a good while, he finally shook his head and flashed {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} as he sent them into the muck.

"Come on, show me!" Cimbolas pleaded with Lococo, who just smiled as he slid his cards into the middle.

"Nooo, why do you do me like that?" Cimbolas sighed, as the players began the bagging process.

Benny Glaser
Benny Glaser

Benny Glaser's seat was empty and Aaron Duczak was the player who collected his stack. He quickly recapped the hand to PokerNews.

Action folded to Aaron Duczak in the small blind and he raised to 25,000 to put Benny Glaser all-in from the big blind. Glaser, who had around 17,000, called off his stack

Duczak had {a-}{k-} while Glaser had {a-}{5-}. Both players missed the flop, but both paired their ace on the turn. No five appeared on the river and Glaser's PSPC was over.

Saout Sends Constabile Packing

Nível 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Antoine Saout
Antoine Saout

Platinum Pass winner and Actor David Constabile (well known for his roles on Breaking Bad and more recently as the character "Wags" on Billions) has been running bad on the Feature Table.

He got his last 8,200 in holding {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} in the small blind on the last level of the day and was up against Antoine Saout's {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} in early position and Daniel Neilson in the hijack, holding {k-Spades}{9-Spades}.

They checked down the board of {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and Saout made a club flush to scoop. Constabile said farewell to his table-mates before exiting the stage.

Veldhuis Gone as Shaban Scores Double Knockout

Nível 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Lex Veldhuis
Lex Veldhuis

Lex Veldhuis three-bet jammed and Lauro Cesar Artmann re-shoved behind him with a slightly smaller stack.

Lauro Artmann: {a-}{k-}
Lex Veldhuis: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}

Despite being dominated, Veldhuis flopped the world as it landed {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Spades} to give him a flush draw and gutshot. But sadly for the PokerStars Ambassador, the board proceeded to brick out {4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

The next hand, an early position player opened to 2,600 and Veldhuis moved all in with less from the cutoff. Fellow PokerStars Pro Arlie Shaban then three-bet to 8,000 on the button and Ante Jukic four-bet jammed a stack of 49,600 from the big blind. The initial raiser folded and Shaban called.

Lex Veldhuis: {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Ante Jukic: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Arlie Shaban: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs}{q-Spades} to improve Shaban to a set for a double knockout as Jukic and Veldhuis hit the rail.

There was 18,000 in the pot. Alexandru Ionescu was in early position against Maria Konnikova in the cutoff.

The flop came {j-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} and Ionescu checked. Konnikova bet 10,000 before Ionescu moved all in for 45,800. Konnikova took a bit of time to think before calling.

Alexandru Ionescu: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Maria Konnikova: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Ionescu had top pair, top kicker, but needed help as Konnikova had pocket kings for the overpair. No help came, however, as the turn brought the {5-Clubs} and the river the {4-Spades} to eliminate Ionescu from the tournament.

Jonathan Jaffe raised it up from middle position and was called by Erik Seidel in the cutoff and Andrew Porter in the small blind. The flop came {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and Jaffe continued with a bet of 2,200 which Seidel called. Porter check-raised to 10,500 which got Jaffe out but Seidel still called.
