Petrangelo Leads; Antonius and Negreanu with Big Stacks - Bubble Bursts on Day 2

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Nick Petrangelo Leads After Day 2 of the Main Event
Nick Petrangelo Leads After Day 2 of the Main Event

Day 2 of the 2017 PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo Casino €5,300 Main Event® saw another 11 players buy in with a fresh stack to create a 727-entry strong field. The total prize pool was set with €3,525,950 and the top 143 players were guaranteed a minimum cash of €7,580. However, all eyes are set on the first-place payout of €500,800, coveted golden trophy and title of first ever PokerStars Championship Main Event winner on European soil.

Six levels of 75 minutes each were scheduled and that's how long it took to let the money bubble burst. It was Salvatore Candido Graziano who lost a flip with pocket queens against the ace-king suited of Davidi Kitai in a battle of the blinds to become the last player to leave empty-handed. Another nine players then ran out of chips during the last four hands, reducing the field to the last 134 hopefuls.

Among those were James Mitchell, Peter Eichhardt, PokerStars Team Pro Jason Mercier, Byron Kaverman, Ryan Franklin and the only ever two-time European Poker Tour Main Event champion Victoria Coren Mitchell. Mercier cold four-bet shoved for around 40 big blinds with pocket tens and three-bettor Douglas Ferreira Souza called with ace-king suited to spike an ace on the flop.

Ultimately, it was High Roller regular Nick Petrangelo who ended up on top with a massive stack of 562,000. Other big stacks and notables included Michael Kolkowicz (470,500), Patrik Antonius (452,200), Faraz Jaka (416,500) Mark Teltscher (408,000), Stefan Schillhabel (402,000) Sebastian Malec (382,500), Andreas Klatt (375,000), Fabrice Soulier (364,500), Dan Smith (333,000), Manig Loeser (323,500) and Hossein Ensan (290,000). Start-of-the-day chip leader Jeff Hakim was among the bigger stacks for most of the day and eventually bagged up 350,000.

Malec is a former EPT Main Event champion and claimed the title in Barcelona last year in one of the most epic final hands, scooping the trophy and a payday of €1,122,800. Klatt is looking to make history here in “Le Sporting” after taking down the 1,252-entry strong €1,100 National Championship Main Event just yesterday.

Four PokerStars Team Pros made it through to Day 3: Daniel Negreanu (300,000), Celina Lin (200,500), Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (121,500) and Liv Boeree (63,500).

Among those who entered before the start were Luke Schwartz, Dario Sammartino, Jussi Nevanlinna, Byron Kaverman, Timothy Adams and Team PokerStars Pro Randy "nanonoko" Lew. However, Lew's appearance didn't last very long as he was eliminated during the first level of the day when running with pocket queens into pocket kings.

The Red Spade also had to wave goodbye to Igor Kurganov and Fatima Moreira de Melo before the money bubble burst. Kurganov fell to Christoph Vogelsang after the German check-called a river-shove in a limped pot with six-deuce for just bottom pair, and Kurganov was caught with the fingers in the cookie jar, tabling only queen-nine suited for a bluff. Moreira de Melo lost a flip with king-queen suited against the pocket tens of Faraz Jaka.

Other notables to bow out throughout the six levels included Steve O'Dwyer, Ole Schemion, Jean Montury, Charlie Carrel, Andrew Chen, 2016 EPT Grand-Final runner up Adrian Allain, Keven Stammen, Gaelle Baumann, Timothy Adams and €50,000 Single-Day High Roller champion Adrian Mateos. O'Dwyer departed in the first level of the day when his flush draw and gutshot didn't get there against the flopped set of Paul-Francois Tedeschi in a four-way limped pot.

The remaining 134 players will return tomorrow at 12 p.m. noon local time to the play five levels of 90 minutes each with a break every level, and the action recommences with blinds of 2,000/4,000 and a running ante of 500. The PokerNews live reporting team will be there to provide the action from the floor until a winner is crowned on Friday, May 5th 2017.

Mercier Among Late Casualties

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier was among the late casualties of Day 2 after the bubble had burst, and he was joined on the rail by Peter Eichhardt and Byron Kaverman.

Douglas Ferreira Souza three-bet an open raise from 6,000 to 18,000, and Mercier four-bet shoved from one seat over for around 120,000. The initial raiser folded, but Souza called to put Mercier at risk.

Jason Mercier: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Douglas Ferreira Souza: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}

On a board of {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}, the Brazilian paired his ace on the flop and Mercier had to settle for a min-cash worth €7,580.

Min-Cash for Mitchell

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

During the last hands of the day, James Mitchell shoved his short stack from the hijack and was called by Alexandru Papazian in the cutoff.

Mitchell had the {K-Spades}{2-Clubs} and was in need of help, as Papazian turned over {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}. The board of {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} left Mitchell drawing dead on the turn already and he headed to the payout desk.

Graziano Loses Flip to Bubble the Main Event

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Salvatore Graziano
Salvatore Graziano

Over on the feature table, Salvatore Candido Graziano moved all in for his last 28,100 from the small blind after an open to 6,000 by Patrik Antonius and Davidi Kitai called in the big blind, Antonius folded. Graziano pondered around the table, waiting for all other tables to complete.

Once all tables were done, the cards were turned over and it was the most classic flip in the history of poker.

Salvatore Candido Graziano: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Davidi Kitai: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}

The {A-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop improved Kitai to a pair of aces, and the {7-Hearts} turn and {8-Diamonds} river changed nothing whatsoever to let the bubble burst.

Bedell Puts Vidal to the Test

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Tom-Aksel Bedell raised to 7,000 and then called a three-bet to 20,000 by Nicolas Fuentes Vidal from one seat over. On the {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop, both players checked and Bedell then bet the {8-Spades} turn for 22,000. Vidal called and faced a bet worth 61,500 on the {3-Clubs} river.

The cameras rushed to the action as it was the last table still running in hand-for-hand mode on the money bubble, and Vidal eventually called. Bedell showed {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades} for a busted straight draw, and Vidal claimed the big pot with the {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}.

A Double Up for Ho

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Maria Ho
Maria Ho

Right after Koja departed in 145th place, the cameramen, interested players and reporters moved over to Maria Ho's table. With the bubble now officially on, she was all in and at risk to go out without any money earned.

The board was already out and Ho soon revealed to have the nuts. With {J-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades}{4-Diamonds} on the table, she had nothing to fear with her {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}. Her opponent turned over {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and doubled up Ho.

Still bubble, still hand for hand.
