Welcome to the 2022 PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event

Le Sporting Monte-Carlo Hosts the EPT
Le Sporting Monte-Carlo Hosts the EPT

The flagship tournament of the 2022 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) presented by Monte-Carlo Casino® awaits as of May 2, 2022. At noon local time, Le Sporting Monte Carlo will welcome poker enthusiasts from near and far for the marquee event of the EPT stop, which has returned to the French Riviera after a three year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All signs point towards a very successful EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event as the attendance numbers of the early events all convinced. Not only the high-stakes competitions but also the FPS €1,100 Main Event gathered large fields and the latter set a new record for the venue in Monte Carlo with a field of 1,918 entries.

The first EPT Main Event since the return to the live poker arena in Prague attracted a field of 1,190 entries and missed out on a record for the stop in the Czech capital by just three entries. Whether or not a similar performance can be expected for the French Riviera remains to be seen.

PokerStars first headed to Monte Carlo back in 2005 during Season 1 of the EPT and returned for most of the years. Until 2016 it was referred to as the EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final, wrapping up the season of the live poker tour before the operator switched to an annual schedule instead. The very first EPT Monte Carlo champion was Rob Hollink and another Dutchman lifted the trophy in 2009 when Pieter de Korver took home a top prize of €2,300,000 when he came out on top of a 935-entry field in the €10,600 buy-in.

Other big names to win their maiden EPT Main Event title on the French Riviera were Jeff Williams, Gavin Griffin, Mohsin Charania, Steve O'Dwyer and Adrian Mateos. In 2016, the buy-in was lowered to €5,300 and Jan Bendik was the first winner thereafter in a record-setting field of 1,098 entries. French driving instructor Nicolas Dumont followed and Manig Loeser is the defending champion following his victory back in 2019.

All players aiming to follow in the footsteps can enter throughout two starting days and prior to the start of Day 2 on Wednesday, May 4, 2022. The two flights feature a total of ten levels of 60 minutes each and each participant is allowed a total of two entries during the registration period.

With blinds of 100-100 and a big blind ante of 100, the EPT €5,300 Main Event is renowned for its deep structure and each participant has 30,000 chips available, good enough for 300 big blinds in the very first level. There will be a break every two levels and a 75-minute dinner break upon completion of level six with the action concluding just after midnight local time.

Approximately 15% of the field will be paid and a 30-second shot clock will be implemented as of Day 3 when the tournament is expected to be near the money bubble. As of Day 2, the level duration also increases to 90 minutes each and will be halved once there are three players remaining or a deal has been made.

The PokerNews live reporting team will provide exclusive updates from the flagship Main Event until a winner has been crowned and live-stream action will be available as of Day 2 on the PokerStars YouTube and Twitch channels as well.

Kitty Kuo
Kitty Kuo

With plenty of chips in the middle in the biggest pot of the day so far, the completed board showed {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Spades}. Kitty Kuo had checked and then faced a bet worth 10,000 by Japan's Rintaro Kagawa. Without much hesitation, Kuo called and Kagawa tabled the {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for aces and jacks to win the first big pot of the day.

Francky Magliocco
Francky Magliocco

In a four-way pot to the {q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop, Francky Magliocco in the small blind checked to Youness Ait Hssain and the latter bet 4,500 in the hijack. He forced one fold for Magliocco to then check-raise to 12,000 and it folded back to Ait Hssain to make the call.

Magliocco bet the {a-Diamonds} turn for 12,000 to receive a call by Ait Hssain and jammed the {5-Hearts} river with the superior stack. Ait Hssain called all-in with {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} but Magliocco had the superior flush in {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}.

Marquez Chips Up; Mokri Doubles and Giovannone Busts

Nível 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
Kayhan Mokri
Kayhan Mokri

On the tail end of a three-way pot, Ana Marquez was spotted leading for 3,500 and her sole remaining opponent let go with the board showing {k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}.

The action on the table remained high as a three-way pot to the {10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop was checked to Luca Giovannone in the cutoff, who bet 3,000 into 2,800 and earned calls from Kayhan Mokri in the small blind and Pasquale Di Ceglie in the hijack.

After the {2-Clubs} turn, it checked to Giovannone once more and he bet 8,000 to receive another two calls. Mokri then jammed the {k-Spades} river for 13,200 and Di Ceglie folded. Giovannone called after a few seconds with the {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} only to get shown the {k-Clubs}{10-Spades} for two pair by Mokri.

That hand left Giovannone with 500 chips and they went in the next hand. He received two callers including John Mooney in the small blind. As the {k-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Hearts}{a-Spades} board was checked down, the {a-Clubs}{6-Hearts} of Mooney were best and Giovannone was felted holding the {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

Tabatabai Doubles Through Maragheh

Nível 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
Reza Tabatabai
Reza Tabatabai

With a huge pot in the middle that appeared to be over 20,000 and a full board of {9-Hearts}{a-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{6-Diamonds}, Reza Mostafavi shoved his last 15,900 and Khashayar Maragheh went into the tank.

Maragheh spent much of his time chatting up Mostafavi and probing for information before the clock was finally called. The tournament director made his way over, but Maragheh tossing in calling chips before the proceedings could begin. Mostafavi turned over {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and Maragheh clapped in frustration while briskly tossing his hand into the muck.

Sitbon Pays Off Toma in Very Long Hand

Nível 3 : 100/300, 300 ante
Tsugunari Toma
Tsugunari Toma

With 18,100 in the middle and the turn showing {5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{j-Spades}, Thi Xoa Nguyen checked in the small blind and so did Julien Sitbon in middle position and Tsugunari Toma on the button.

Nguyen then bet the {2-Clubs} river for 12,000 and Sitbon went into a long tank. The clock was called on him and he then called within the 30 seconds only for Toma to glance at Nguyen's stack and raise to 25,000.

Nguyen folded after short consideration and Sitbon was stunned. "Oh my god, I knew you didn't have it," he said in French and the next tank by Sitbon followed. He was called the clock upon a second time and the Frenchman then called, again.

Toma rolled over the {8-Spades}{6-Hearts} for a straight and Sitbon mucked his cards in disgust. "You have aces, I know," Toma said in table chat.

Tamon Nakamura
Tamon Nakamura

Tamon Nakamura got his short stack in with the {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Emil Bise did so with the {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. Tsugunari Toma had the by far biggest stack of the three players involved and turned over {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}.

The {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{8-Spades} board improved Bise to the superior full house and Nakamura was sent to the rail.

Maltez Doubles Through Klaversma; Klaversma Bounces Right Back

Nível 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Arnaud Mattern
Arnaud Mattern

With a full board of {9-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{3-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Tim Klaversma was seen paying off Fabrice Maltez, who had committed his last 35,000 with {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}. Klaversma was showing {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}, which wasn't good enough to beat the three aces of Maltez.

On the very next hand, Arnaud Mattern open-shoved for 7,800 and Klaversma shoved behind with his last 9,000. The rest of the table got out of the way and action was heads up with Mattern at risk.

Arnaud Mattern: {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Tim Klaversma: {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {k-Spades}{7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Klaversma made a pair of kings to eliminate Mattern and bring his stack partially back to health.

Toma Busts Lala and Sitbon

Nível 5 : 200/500, 500 ante
Tsugunari Toma
Tsugunari Toma

Tsugunari Toma raised to 1,100 from under the gun and was called two ways. Julien Sitbon then squeezed to 7,200 and Toma called, as did Mihail Lala and they headed to the {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop.

Sitbon bet 9,500 and Toma moved all-in, which prompted Lala to call all-in for 22,000 and Sitbon also got his last 35,000 into the middle as well.

Mihail Lala: {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Julien Sitbon: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Tsugunari Toma: {8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}

In an earlier showdown, Toma had won a big pot off Sitbon and he would do so again now as the board completed with the {6-Hearts} turn and {7-Hearts} river. Toma secured a double knockout and soared to the top of the leaderboard by a healthy margin.

Rotundo Eliminated by Nikolaev

Nível 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Mikhail Nikolaev
Mikhail Nikolaev

There were 2,000 chips in front of Mikhail Nikolaev in the cutoff and Christian Rotundo then moved all-in for 9,300 in the small blind. Jason Wheatley called in late position and Nikolaev made it three ways to the {q-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop.

Wheatley checked and Nikolaev bet 15,000 to isolate successfully.

Christian Rotundo: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Mikhail Nikolaev: {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

The {6-Spades} turn and {3-Clubs} river brought no help to Rotundo and he was eliminated.

"You call 10k preflop with that? You are a very lucky guy," Wheatley said in table chat to which Nikolaev replied "good flop" while raking in the chips.
