Day 1a of the EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event has come to an end and 419 runners turned out to Monte Carlo Sporting Complex for the first of two flights in the flagship event of the 2022 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) presented by Monte-Carlo Casino®.

The opening flight generated a prize pool of €2,526,850, and the field tops the last time an EPT Main Event was held in Monte Carlo, when 342 players turned out for Day 1a. Despite the smaller field, 128 players bagged in 2019, compared to the 121 that will return on Wednesday for Day 2. It remains to be seen if the tournament will make a run at the record turnout of 1,098 players in 2016.

Merijn van Rooij of the Netherlands is the chip leader after 10 levels of play and he will return with 159 big blinds on Day 2. He's followed closely by Bruno Volkmann, Andrew Hulme, and Kazuhiko Yotsushika. Ramon Colillas and Oliver Bosch are also among the top stacks of the day, along with bracelet winners Justin Saliba and Yuri Dzivielevski.

Day 1a Highlights

It was a banner day for eliminations with more than two-thirds of the field falling before the end of the night. Among them was Tamon Nakamura, who was eliminated on a three-way pot when his tens were out drawn by the queen-eight of bracelet winner Emil Bise. Tsugunari Toma was the third player and had both covered, but his pocket threes were no good.

Toma went on to score a double elimination of Julien Sitbon and Mihail Lala when his eight-six made a straight on the river to crack Sitbon's pocket queens. It was the second big pot that Toma took from Sitbon, and both were a straight made with an eight-six. Toma fell back later in the day and will return for Day 2 with one of the short stacks.

2015 EPT Malta Main Event champion Niall Farrell took his shot in the first flight and will return for Day 2, thanks in part to a clash with Jonas Lauck where Farrell shoved the river and Lauck got away from it to move Farrell above 100K chips. He fell back slightly and finished with 87,000, but he will return on Wednesday in search of his second EPT Main Event title.

Elsewhere, bracelet winner Leo Margets steadily built her stack throughout the day, starting with a double through Ermo Kosk with pocket sevens. She found another pot later in the day when she got a shove through against Ferenc Deak. Margets ended the day with 98,500 and she will return on Wednesday for a shot at Day 3.

Victoria Coren Mitchell will also return for Day 2 after bagging a stack with 47,500, in part thanks to a runner-runner full house against Dan Tolppanen.

Other notable returning players include PokerStars ambassador Benjamin Spragg, John Mooney, Timothy Adams, Sam Greenwood, Daniel Dvoress, 2021 WSOP Main Event Champion Koray Aldemir, and Gaelle Baumann, who bagged 181,500 to finish just outside the top ten.

Day 1b on Tuesday

Action will continue Tuesday, May 3 at noon local time with the second of two flights in the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event. Players who were eliminated on Monday will have another opportunity to jump into Tuesday’s flight, and registration will continue through the end of Day 2. Players will once again start with 30,000 in chips and play ten 60-minute levels before they combine with the Day 1a survivors on Wednesday.

Be sure to keep it here with the PokerNews team all week long for live updates from the EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event.

Hissou Doubles Through Yankov

Sirzat Hissou
Sirzat Hissou

With 6,800 in the pot and {5-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs} on the board, action was heads-up between Sirzat Hissou and Krasimir Yankov. Yankov bet 6,700 and HIssou shoved his last 22,000. Yankov spent a few moments in the tank before he counted out calling chips and moved them into the middle.

Sirzat Hissou: {k-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Krasimir Yankov: {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}

The turn was {k-Spades} and the river {q-Spades}, with no help for Yankov, and Hissou secured the double with kings and eights.

Spragg Jumps to a Bigger Stack

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Benjamin Spragg
Benjamin Spragg

Benjamin Spragg raised to 2,200 on the button and then called the shove by Ovidiu Ont for 15,300 in the small blind.

Ovidiu Ont: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Benjamin Spragg: {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

The {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{k-Spades} board gave Spragg two pair and he scored the knockout. Before the table broke right after, Spragg recalled the previous hand in which he more than doubled in a three-way all-in. According to the Brit, Siarhei Ahapau was all-in for 24,000 with {a-}{9-} and Thomas Muehloecker isolated with the {a-}{10-}.

Spragg was at risk for some 60,000 and the {j-}{10-}{5-}{4-}{k-} board gave Spragg the best hand eventually.

Petrone Busts Dickerson and Doubles Through Panagiotidis

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Ramiro Petrone
Ramiro Petrone

Vasileios Panagiotidis looked up two shorter stacks when Jules Dickerson was all-in for the last 20,500 and Ramiro Petrone got it in from the very next seat for 50,800, creating the following three-way all-in showdown.

Jules Dickerson: {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Ramiro Petrone: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Vasileios Panagiotidis: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

The {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop and {10-Spades} river put the Greek on the brink of a double knockout but Petrone spiked the {9-Spades} on the river. Perhaps the most well-known Greek word followed several times, as Panagiotidis exclaimed "malaka" before parting ways with a big portion of his stack.

To those not knowing the meaning, it can be said to a "good friend" or the exact opposite and is frequently used when explaining hand histories.

Alexandre Reard: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Pascal Lefrancois: {q-Spades}{10-Spades}

The board ran out {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and the sevens held to secure the double for Reard.

Jorstad Eliminated by Saliba

Nível 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Espen Jorstad
Espen Jorstad

The cards were already on their backs in a preflop contest in which Espen Jorstad was the player at risk for what appeared to be 38,400 as he was looked up by Justin Saliba with the superior stack.

Espen Jorstad: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Justin Saliba: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The dominated pair found no help on the {4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} board and that spelled the end for the Norwegian, who stuck around a bit to discuss a previous hand with Pedro Marques that the duo had played earlier.

Saliba, in the meanwhile, moved to more than two times the average stack with the latest knockout.

Mitchell Spikes River to Eliminate Tolppanen

Nível 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Victoria Coren Mitchell
Victoria Coren Mitchell

With 27,000 in the pot and {8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs} on the board, Victoria Coren Mitchell checked and Dan Tolppanen shoved his last 15,200. After taking a moment to consider her options, Mitchell tossed in the chips to call and the cards were turned up.

Dan Tolppanen: {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}
Victoria Coren Mitchell: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

Tolppanen had a set of fours and the big lead, but the turn {8-Diamonds} and river {8-Spades} brought a better full house with eights full of nines and Tolppanen was eliminated on the unlucky runout.

Rotundo Eliminated by Nikolaev

Nível 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Mikhail Nikolaev
Mikhail Nikolaev

There were 2,000 chips in front of Mikhail Nikolaev in the cutoff and Christian Rotundo then moved all-in for 9,300 in the small blind. Jason Wheatley called in late position and Nikolaev made it three ways to the {q-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop.

Wheatley checked and Nikolaev bet 15,000 to isolate successfully.

Christian Rotundo: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Mikhail Nikolaev: {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

The {6-Spades} turn and {3-Clubs} river brought no help to Rotundo and he was eliminated.

"You call 10k preflop with that? You are a very lucky guy," Wheatley said in table chat to which Nikolaev replied "good flop" while raking in the chips.

Toma Busts Lala and Sitbon

Nível 5 : 200/500, 500 ante
Tsugunari Toma
Tsugunari Toma

Tsugunari Toma raised to 1,100 from under the gun and was called two ways. Julien Sitbon then squeezed to 7,200 and Toma called, as did Mihail Lala and they headed to the {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop.

Sitbon bet 9,500 and Toma moved all-in, which prompted Lala to call all-in for 22,000 and Sitbon also got his last 35,000 into the middle as well.

Mihail Lala: {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Julien Sitbon: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Tsugunari Toma: {8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}

In an earlier showdown, Toma had won a big pot off Sitbon and he would do so again now as the board completed with the {6-Hearts} turn and {7-Hearts} river. Toma secured a double knockout and soared to the top of the leaderboard by a healthy margin.

Maltez Doubles Through Klaversma; Klaversma Bounces Right Back

Nível 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Arnaud Mattern
Arnaud Mattern

With a full board of {9-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{3-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Tim Klaversma was seen paying off Fabrice Maltez, who had committed his last 35,000 with {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}. Klaversma was showing {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}, which wasn't good enough to beat the three aces of Maltez.

On the very next hand, Arnaud Mattern open-shoved for 7,800 and Klaversma shoved behind with his last 9,000. The rest of the table got out of the way and action was heads up with Mattern at risk.

Arnaud Mattern: {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Tim Klaversma: {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {k-Spades}{7-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Klaversma made a pair of kings to eliminate Mattern and bring his stack partially back to health.
