Tournament Room at Monte-Carlo Sporting

At 12 p.m. local time, the flagship event of the 2019 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino European Poker Tour (EPT) festival kicks off at the Monte-Carlo Sporting and the Salle des Etoiles will feature poker enthusiasts from near and far in their pursuit to become the latest EPT Main Event champion.

Since 2005, the European Poker Tour has been visiting the home of the rich and famous on the French Riviera and the winner's list features some of the biggest names of the international poker circuit in Jeff Williams, Gavin Griffin, Mohsin Charania, Adrian Mateos, Steve O'Dwyer and Jan Bendik.

One year ago, it was French driving school instructor Nicolas Dumont that won his entry for the €5,300 Main Event by chance and defeated a field of 777 entries to lift the trophy. Dumont defeated New Zealand's Honglin Jiang in heads-up and claimed a top prize of €712,000 for his efforts, becoming the first Frenchman to win the elusive title in the Municipality of Monaco.

Seat Open After 15 Minutes

Nível 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
Zorlu Er
Zorlu Er

In the corner of the Salle des Etoiles, on table 10 to be exact, Zorlu Er can be found and he took a small hit to his stack early on. Er had raised from under the gun and Cyril Nguyen called in the big blind, check-called a bet on the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop. On the {9-Spades} turn, Nguyen bet 700 and Er called before the {j-Spades} river was checked.

Nguyen tabled {a-Spades}{2-Spades} for top and bottom pair, which won the pot.

Just a few minutes later, the dealer announced a seat open and sure enough it was on table 10. It was not Er that busted, instead, he had knocked out [Removed:150] to bump his stack up to two times he started with!

According to Er, he had pocket aces and Iadisernia {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. With check-raise on a jack-high flop and a jam on a {q-} turn, Er created fireworks and he was called by Iadisernia with a gutshot and nut flush draw that bricked.

Set Nets Andreev a Decent Pot

Nível 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
Andrey Andreev
Andrey Andreev

There was an early position open to 300 and two calls behind before Andrey Andreev upped it to 1,700 in the small blind. Raffaello Locatelli called in the big blind and everyone else decided to pass.

The flop fell {7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and Andreev check-called Locatelli's 1,000 bet. The {9-Diamonds} turn saw a check apiece and the dealer laid the {j-Clubs} on the river. Andreev lead for 3,000 and when Locatelli called, he showed {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} for a rivered set. It was good to take down the pot.

Yake Wu in the €1,100 French National Championship
Yake Wu in the €1,100 French National Championship

On the tail end of a bigger pot between Fady Kamar and Yake Wu, the latter paid off a hefty bet of what appeared to be 14,000 with the board showing {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{10-Spades}{8-Spades}{9-Hearts}. Kamar rolled over {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for the straight flush and even the dealer gasped out a "woah."

Wiechers Second Casualty on Day 1b

Nível 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Erwin Wiechers - playing French National Championship
Erwin Wiechers - playing French National Championship

Erwin Wiechers had won his entry to the Main Event in a live satellite and quickly lost a big portion of his stack with aces versus queens according to Theodore McQuilkin. Things got even worse for the Dutchman, as he has become the second casualty of the day.

A raise and three callers saw Wiechers squeeze the small blind and Thiago Signorelli Viana in the cutoff reraised. Wiechers jammed for the last 12,000 and was snap-called.

Erwin Wiechers: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Thiago Signorelli Viana: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

The board came {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}{3-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{9-Spades} and Wiechers was eliminated. Paul Klann also hit the rail soon after to make it three bustouts in the first two levels so far.

Andreev Eliminated by the "Set Destroyer"

Nível 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Afshin Taheri in the €1,100 French National Championship
Afshin Taheri in the €1,100 French National Championship

Andrey Andreev is out (for the moment at least) after flopping top set with pocket-sevens on a {7-}{5-}{3-} flop but running into the made straight held by Afshin Taheri with {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} in the hole. With no help on the turn or river for the Russian, he will have to re-enter to stay in contention.

It is great news for Taheri though, with the Iranian more than doubling what he started the day with. His good run has not gone unnoticed by his opponents either, with Raffaello Locatelli proclaiming him the "set destroyer" before promising to fold any sets against him.

Sow Off to a Great Start

Nível 3 : 100/200, 200 ante
Kalidou Sow
Kalidou Sow

Kalidou Sow just scooped a nice pot to boost his stack on a table that hosts several well-known players on the international poker circuit such as PSPC champion Ramon Colillas and Sam Grafton.

With 2,100 in the middle and the flop showing {j-Spades}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, Mikhail Soltanov in the big blind check-raised from 900 to 2,300 and Sow called. The {7-Spades} on the turn brought a bet of 4,300 by Soltanov and a call by Sow. Soltanov slowed down on the {q-Hearts} river and Sow made it 9,500 to go, which was quickly called.

Sow rolled over the {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for two pair and that won the pot.

Thiago Signorelli Viana
Thiago Signorelli Viana

Marcuss Liow: {k-Spades}{8-Spades}
Thiago Signorelli Viana: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}

Locatelli Eliminated by Pupillo

Nível 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

With plenty of chips already in the middle and the turn showing {6-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Spades}, Raffaello Locatelli checked in the hijack and Nick Pupillo made it 7,500 to go, which Locatelli called with around as much behind. Locatelli checked blind and Pupillo bet the {7-Hearts} river for 9,000.

Locatelli called all in and Pupillo turned over {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, which resulted in a "damn, you are so good" by Locatelli. He mucked his cards, but as per all in situation rules, the {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} were exposed.

Further notables on the table include Dragos Trofimov, Afshin Taheri and Mazin Khoury.
