Ludovic Geilich Tops Star-Studded Field in Day 1a of the Main Event

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Ludovic Geilich
Ludovic Geilich

The Main Event of the 2019 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino European Poker Tour kicked off today at The Monte-Carlo Sporting. In the first of two starting flights, the flagship event attracted 342 runners, of which 128 have secured themselves a place in Day 2.

There were many big names scattered around the cardroom but when it was time to bag at the end, it was undoubtedly Ludovic Geilich’s day. The professional chipped up to an impressive 271,400, for a decisive chip lead during the 10 hours on today’s schedule.

His run was even more impressive considering the table he was on during the last couple of levels. Featuring poker heavyweights that included Ryan Riess, Julien Martini, Dominykas Karmazinas and PokerStars Ambassadors Ramon Colillas and Kalidou Sow, Geilich survived where others were unable to do so. Most notable was the huge clash between Sow and Martini, which sent Sow to the rail 30 minutes before the end. Sow had turned trips with queen-nine suited and after a checked flop, Martini check-called a bet on the turn. The river was a six that gave Martini a full house with pocket-sixes and saw the rest of the chips go into the middle.

Kalidou Sow

It was also the hand that saw Martini net second place in the counts, with the Frenchman taking 218,000 through, the only other player in the field to exceed the 200,000 mark. He is followed by Conor Beresford (195500) and Ibrahim Ghassan (182000), taking third and fourth respectively. Dominykas Karmazinas rounded out the top five with 178,600.

Of the PokerStars Ambassadors in contention today, Maria Konnikova (133200) takes forward the biggest stack. Ramon Colillas also bagged but dropped to 55,000 after a promising start. Fatima Moreira De Melo busted after the last break and Andre Akkari also failed to bag and tag, but all is not lost as the trio still have one re-entry remaining apiece.

Many of the most well-known names who took part today will return for Day 2 on Wednesday. They include Boris Kolev (160,000), Paul Michaelis (159,000), Vlad Darie (153,000), Dario Sammartino (144,900), Winfred Yu (144,400), Govert Metaal (138,700), Manig Loeser (128,600), Georgios Karakousis (120,300), Orpen Kisacikoglu (109,900), Florian Duta (108,400), Sam Greenwood (107,700), Arsenii Karmatckii (104,200), Ryan Riess (86,400), Maria Lampropoulos, (84,800), Norbert Szecsi (76,700), Pierre Calamusa (71,000), Randy Lew (48,700), Michael Soyza (48,500), Christoph Vogelsang, (44,100), Chin Wei Lim (34,900) and Mohsin Charania (18,000).

Not all of the well-known players were able to advance. Throughout the course of the day, we said goodbye to Adrian Mateos, Alexandru Papazian, David Peters, Denys Shafikov, Eric Sfez, Chen An Lim, Jean-Noel Thorel, Joao Simao, Koray Aldemir, Kristen Bicknell, Lars Bonding, Luc Greenwood, Maria Ho, Mark Teltscher, Marton Czuczor, Matas Cimbolas, Maxim Panyak, Nick Petrangelo, Paul Newey, Rainer Kempe, Sam Grafton, Sylvain Loosli, Timur Margolin, and two-time EPT Champion Victoria Coren Mitchell.

For those who haven’t used their single re-entry, there is always Day 1b tomorrow, which - in terms of the structure - will be pretty much an exact replica of today. Play will start at 12 pm and there are 10 one-hour levels on the clock. There will be a 20-minute break after every two hours, except for the 75-minute dinner break at the end of Level 6.

Join PokerNews then for live updates on all of the Main Event action, from the moment cards are in the air, until the last chip has been bagged.

Monster Clash Between Sow and Martini

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Julien Martini
Julien Martini

In one of the defining hands of the day, it all began with an open to 2,600 from Julien Martini. Kalidou Sow was sat on the button and three-bet to 7,500. Martini called and with everyone else out of the way, the two players went to the flop.

It came the {10-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and when Martini checked, Sow checked it back. The turn was the {9-Diamonds} and following another check from Martini, Sow made it 8,600 to proceed. Martini called and the two players headed onto the river.

The dealer laid the {6-Spades} down and Martini checked once more. This time the price to play was 26,500 but Martini wasn't done yet and moved all in for 97,500 in total. Sow was in a tough spot, with a similar stack size, Martini had just enough to send him to the rail and he went into the tank.

After a couple of minutes, he put a stack of chips over the line to signify the call and they turned their cards over.

Julien Martini: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}
Kalidou Sow: {q-Spades}{9-Spades}

It was trips for Sow but he had been bested on the river by Martini's full house and he leaves the table half an hour before the end of play. Martini meanwhile, has risen through the rankings and is one of the top stacks now.

Theodore McQuilkin
Theodore McQuilkin

Theodore McQuilkin raised and picked up a single caller in Darie Vlad from one seat over. On the {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop, McQuilkin checked and Vlad bet 5,700. McQuilkin opted for a check-raise to 20,200 and Vlad came along.

After the {7-Spades} turn, McQuilkin bet big for 55,000 and forced a reluctant fold from his opponent. Further notables on the same table can be found below.

Riess Cold Four-Bets Over Martini and Karmazinas

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

It was a three-way battle between the button and the blinds. Julien Martini opened to 3,000 and Dominykas Karmazinas three-bet to 14,500 in the small blind, before Ryan Riess cold four-bet all in for a total of 59,600. Martini passed and Karmazinas asked for a count before tank-folding.

Riess offered to show one card the {7-Clubs} was turned over. "They were both the same" said Ludovic Geilich as Riess collected the pot.

Konnikova Doesn't Back Down Against Kolev

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Maria Konnikova
Maria Konnikova

Maria Konnikova started things off with an open in middle position. Boris Kolev called behind on the button and Florian Duta completed his big blind.

The flop was {7-Spades}{j-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Duta checked before Konnikova continued for 2,700. Kolev peeled and Duta moved aside.

The turn was the {3-Hearts} and Konnikova barreled for 11,600, which Kolev called. With an already chunky pot in the middle, Konnikova bet once more, making it 45,000 to see her cards. It was enough to get a snap-fold from Kolev and The PokerStars Ambassador chips up.

Maria Ho
Maria Ho

Maria Ho was all in and at risk for 12,300 with the {8-Spades}{7-Spades} and Maria Lampropulos called with {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}.

Ho flopped a flush draw on {9-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts}, but the {3-Diamonds} turn and {6-Diamonds} river were blanks to send Ho to the rail. This leaves just two Marias in today's field, as Maria Konnikova is also still in contention two tables over.

Merfeldas Eliminated by Grieco

Nível 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Arvydas Merfeldas
Arvydas Merfeldas

There was an open to 1,700 and Arvydas Merfeldas called before Nicola Grieco three-bet to 6,000. Both players called and the trio saw a {9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} flop.

It was checked by both players before Grieco moved all in for 50,000. Merfeldas called and they spun their cards on their backs.

Nicola Grieco: {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}
Arvydas Merfeldas: {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}

It was set vs overpair and Grieco was out of his seat calling for an ace. The {9-Spades} turn gave Merfeldas a full house but added two nines to Grieco's outs.

When Grieco saw the {a-Diamonds} on the river, he couldn't contain his delight, cheering and celebrating to the enjoyment of everyone, including Merfeldas who smiled graciously as he left the table.

Konnikova and Riess Rising; Kitai Vanishes

Nível 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Maria Konnikova
Maria Konnikova

On the former table of Davidi Kitai, a massive stack has emerged for Dmytro Shuvanov while the Triple Crown champion was among those that busted before the dinner break.

Maria Konnikova and Ryan Riess also boosted their stacks, the former without and the latter with showdown.

Konnikova was involved in three-way action to the {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Spades}{3-Clubs} turn and Tomas Jozonis bet 2,600. Arvydas Merfeldas called and Konnikova raised to 12,200. Jozonis reluctantly folded and Merfeldas did so as well, flashing the {k-Hearts}.

In the last hand before the break, a limped pot resulted in the elimination of Macsim Robert one table over from Konnikova. Adolfo Vaeza had limped the button, as did Robert in the small blind, and Riess checked the big blind. Riess check-raised a bet of Vaeza and two calls followed on the {k-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop.

Only Robert check-called a bet on the {7-Spades} turn and checked the {5-Clubs} river. Riess shoved for effectively 15,000, as that's what Robert had left. The Romanian ended up in the think tank for several minutes and the clock was called. Once tournament staff arrived to give Robert a 30-second countdown, he called and Riess turned over {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for two pair. Robert mucked {k-Hearts}{10-Clubs} and headed out of the tournament area.

Kisacikoglu Eliminated

Nível 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Orpen Kisacikoglu
Orpen Kisacikoglu

Orpen Kisacikoglu opened the action and called a three-bet by Dmitry Prusov who had position on him. No one else got involved and the pair went heads up to the flop.

On the {3-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} board, Kisacikoglu check-raised Prusov's 6,000 continuation bet to 12,000. Prusov thought about his options and elected to move all in over the top for a total of 32,100. It was a quick call from the Turk and when the cards were flipped over, he had the best of it.

Dmitry Prusov: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Orpen Kisacikoglu: {10-Spades}{9-Spades}

It was top two pair versus an over pair but the {j-Hearts} turn changed everything, making Prusov top set and reducing Kisacikoglu's outs to zero. The {8-Hearts} river was inconsequential.

Kisacikoglu was left with 1,700 chips but lost those to Luc Greenwood in the very next hand.
