It was a busy opening day to one of the last high rollers on the schedule for the 2019 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo Casino EPT festival. The €25,000 EPT High Roller saw a total of 132 entries take to the felt and late registration will remain open until the cards go in the air today for the start of Day 2.

There are plenty of familiar names at the top of the leaderboard and Canadian Mike Watson leads them all heading into competition today. Watson will return to a stack of 311,500, inching ahead of Vasily Klyukhin (302,500), fellow Canadian Luc Greenwood (301,500), and David Dayan (300,000).

When the action resumes at 12:30 p.m. local time, there will be at least 56 players still remaining. For any players still wishing to enter the field, they will be given a starting stack of 50,000 chips. The blinds will resume at 1,000/2,000 with a big blind ante of 2,000.

The levels will continue to be 60-minute in length with a 20-minute break after every two levels. There will also be a 75-minute dinner break after the sixth level of the day. A total of 10 levels are on the schedule for today with a winner officially being crowned tomorrow.

Leow Dodges Badziakouski's "Nuts"

Nível 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Ivan Leow
Ivan Leow

Mikita Badziakouski raised to 4,500 in middle position and Ivan Leow three-bet to 15,000 in the cutoff. The action folded back to Badziakouski who made the call. The flop came {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and Badziakouski checked to Leow who pushed all in for 27,000.

"Nuts!" Badziakouski shouted as he instantly slammed in chips to call. Badziakouski turned over {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and was up against the {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} of Leow.

The turn was the {8-Spades} which took away some of Badziakouski's outs and the {9-Spades} completed the board. Although Badziakouski pleaded that he had the winner, Leow was awarded a double up.

Ambrose Travers Keeps The Poker Party Going

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Ambrose Travers
Ambrose Travers

Three months ago Ambrose Travers was in the Bahamas. He and a group of friends were there to cheer on Darren Millar as the latter lived out his Platinum Pass dream in the PSPC. It was such a good time that nobody wanted the party to end.

Now Travers is playing on Day 4 of the EPT Monte Carlo event, where he is one of just 30 players remaining. It’s something of a sequel to the PSPC festivities: while Travers battles with Sam Greenwood and Nicolas Chouity on the TV table, Millar and some of the same friends that cheered him on are here rooting for Travers.

“They’re the best friends in the world, they are,” he told PokerStars Blog this afternoon. “Darren did so well in the Bahamas, we couldn’t wait to get back home to get to the next tournament. PokerStars ran such a marvelous party there, we says, ‘What’s the next big event?’ The next big event was this one.”

So he jumped into a €5.50 satellite. Six hours later, after winning that first satellite and then the €55 and €530 qualifiers that it fed into, he’d earned himself a package to play in Monte Carlo.

Fares and Antonius Eliminated

Patrik Antonius

Hassan Fares moved all in for 17,000 from under the gun and Isaac Haxton called in the small blind.

Hassan Fares: {10-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Isaac Haxton: {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

The board was {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{k-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and Fares was eliminated.

Meanwhile on a neighbouring table, Patrik Antonius was all in with {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and was ahead of the {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} of Koray Aldemir.

That was until a king on the {k-Spades}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop gave Aldemir the lead, and it held on the {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} runout to eliminate Antonius.

Aido Adds to His Collection

Nível 13 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Adrian Mateos & Sergio Aido
Adrian Mateos & Sergio Aido

Adrian Mateos and Sergio Aido, former roommates and both from Spain, have landed side-by-side on Table 2. The two Spaniards got heads-up in a pot with a flop reading {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. Mateos checked to Aido who bet 8,500 and Mateos called.

The turn brought the {8-Diamonds} and Mateos checked again. Aido fired another 30,000 and Mateos called to see the {3-Clubs} on the river. Mateos checked for the third time and Aido shipped all in. Mateos quickly rifled his cards to the muck and Aido scooped another pot.

Evy Widvey Kvilhaug Turning €55 into a Lot More in the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event

Nível 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Evy Kvilhaug
Evy Kvilhaug

Evy Widvey Kvilhaug is having the run of her life in the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino European Poker Tour €5,300 EPT Main Event after qualifying for just €55 online at PokerStars. From that feeder satellite, she got into a €530 direct qualifier which she nearly bubbled.

“It was so exciting in the end there. So I barely made it and I think it took me a couple of days before I understood what I really won. It’s been crazy.”

Widvey came in with very little expectations as a small-stakes online player with $9,000 in cashes on her Hendon Mob.

“I knew it was going to be a lot of good players so I just thought, let’s go for the experience, it’s going to be fun to say ‘I played in an EPT once.’ Now I can say I played in an EPT once and I cashed!’”

The World According to Boutros Naim

Nível 15 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Boutros Naim
Boutros Naim

Boutros Pierre Naim is a man of will.

The Lebanese-born, poker-playing Monaco resident — and PokerStars qualifier to the EPT Main Event this week — once quit his investment banking job on a whim because his company moved offices from one part of London to another. It increased his commuting time and Naim wouldn’t stand for it.

“For me,” he says, “this was basically a no-go.” So he moved to Monaco.

But when he was in his 60s and living in the principality, Naim found himself missing his son, who had moved to Massachusetts to attend Babson College. Naim decided to move nearby and applied to Harvard University — not to seek a degree but simply to take courses on subjects like economics, the history of the Ottoman Empire, and meta-ethics. He applied for admission through the same process as any other student, leading to some bureaucratic-themed amusement.
