Albert Daher Leads After a Huge Day 1b

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Albert Daher
Albert Daher

The 2016 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final drew a crowd of 778, and Albert Daher bagged the overnight chip lead on Day 1b, taking 266,600 chips forward to Day 2. More than 223 PokerStars online qualifiers participated on Day 1b alone, and with registration open until the start of Day 2 this event will get very close to 1,100 total entries.

Daher started his day out in the perfect possible way, turning a jack-high flush in a five-bet pot. Daher had four-bet jack-ten suited and his opponent five-bet with pocket fives. Moments later, he had all of the player's chips. A little while later, Daher busted two more players, and he didn't look back after that bagging up a massive chip lead.

A ton of Team PokerStars players entered the event today, headlined by team pro Vanessa Selbst with 155,200 and followed by Fatima Moreira de Melo with 149,200. Moreira de Melo had a very entertaining table for most of the day, and we managed to capture one of the big pots she won.

Players that didn't see things go their way included [Removed:17], Andrey Zaichenko, Lee Markholt, and Andrew Chen, who were knocked out in the early goings. PokerStars team pro Daniel Negreanu entered the tournament after the dinner break, but he lasted for no more than 35 minutes.

Negreanu made top pair top kicker with ace-king, but that was not enough against Markku Koplimaa, who had hit his gut shot straight on the turn. The Estonian player ended up taking 199,900 to Day 2, and that makes him one of the biggest stacks in the room.

The chip leader aside, Kuljinder Sidhu (231,000) and Sebastian Lebaron (234,400) are the only two players over 200,000. The other Team PokerStars players that survived the day included Randy Lew (143,000), Naoya Kihara (123,100), Celina Lin (27,300), and Lex Veldhuis (14,300).

Play will continue on Monday at 12 p.m. local time.

He Came, He Saw, He Went Back to His Hotel Room

"I trapped him!" Daniel Negreanu just said with a big smile, as we ran into him leaving the tournament room.

The quote suggested a good result, but the truth was far from that as Negreanu busting the EPT Grand Final in record speed after entering the tournament after the dinner break.

Negreanu told us what happened in the hand that went as following.

Negreanu raised under the gun holding ace-king to 1,175 and the man he just told to speed things up - Markku Koplimaa - three-bet to 3,450 from the small blind. Negreanu made the call, and the flop brought out {K-}{9-}{5-} with two spades.

Koplimaa bet 3,600 on the flop and Negreanu called, and a {7-} hit on the turn. Negreanu called another 7,000 chips and the board completed on the river with a {J-}, and Koplimaa put Negreanu all in.

"I called for 17,000, and he had six-eight of diamonds," Negreanu cackled.

Negreanu was knocked out by the straight of his opponent, and Koplimaa now sits on 200,000.

Daniel NegreanuOut in record time! I raise AK, small blind 3 bet. Flop K95 turn 7 river J. He got me with 68 lol! #EPTGrandFinal
Daniel NegreanuBest part, kid says "I didn't want to bust you" and someone goes "so you 3 bet him with 68?" Haha :-)

Lebanon's Albert Daher continues to lead following the dinner break, now cresting the 200,000-chip mark and pounding away at his table with value bet after value bet.

The latest came when he bet 11,000 on the river of a {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}{j-Spades} board. His heads-up opponent paid off and Daher showed him the goods, having turned the {5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} into a straight.

Gu Soars, Moreira de Melo Chips Up and Grassi Comes Crashing Down

Nível 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Fatima Moreira de Melo

Amassing a stack worth six figures on Day 1 of any EPT is a great accomplishment, and Italian player Samuele Grassi managed to do just that halfway through the second level of the day. Now, just two hours later, he finds himself on the rail in disbelief at his luck.

Grassi - loud but polite - complained about his luck as he shook hands with the other players at the table before exiting the room.

Ten minutes earlier we arrived at Grassi's table, with about 45,000 chips in front of him, while Team PokerStars SportsStar Fatima Moreira de Melo and Huidong Gu were tangled up in a pot.

Moreira de Melo had raised before the flop, and after receiving two calls, the flop brought out {K-Clubs}{6-Spades}{K-Hearts}. She bet 900. Only Gu called, and the turn brought the {K-Spades}. This time, the former Olympic field hockey champion bet 2,500 and Gu raised it up to 7,000.

Moreira de Melo went into the tank for a while before calling, and the {A-Clubs} completed the board. Moreira de Melo checked to Gu, who thought for a bit before checking behind.

In frustration of Gu's check, Moreira de Melo tabled {k-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} for quads, and Gu smiled, very pleased with his check.

"Jacks," Gu said, and Moreira de Melo cried out the ace was the worst possible card for her.

The atmosphere at the table was very jovial, as everyone laughed with Gu continuing to talk.

On the very next hand, things quieted down a bit when Moreira de Melo raised to 500 under the gun and James Akenhead called. Gu three-bet to 2,100 from the hijack and Grassi called from the cutoff. Both Moreira de Melo and Akenhead also called to create four-way action.

The flop brought out the {3-Hearts}{A-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, and the action quickly checked to Grassi, who bet 3,700. Moreira de Melo called, and both Akenhead and Gu quickly folded.

On the {7-Clubs} turn, both players checked. The river completed the board with the {A-Diamonds}, and Moreira de Melo lead out for 7,500. Grassi tanked for a bit, but eventually he made the call.

The Dutch player revealed {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, and Grassi was far from happy yelling, "I flopped two pairs!"

"My tournament is over now!" Grassi yelled. "All I do is push or fold."

Grassi went on to rattle off all the hands he lost in the last two levels, and Moreira de Melo smiled saying, "I'm just lucky."

"I'm lucky in life, but not in poker," Grassi responded, still sitting with 23,000 chips.

Two hands later, a player limped and Grassi moved all in right away.

"Blind!" Grassi yelled. "All in blind!"

"No look!" Grassi continued, keeping his cards covered by some chips.

Moreira de Melo gave it some thought, but she ultimately folded, and the limper called right away.

Grassi's opponent showed {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}, and the Italian player revealed the {10-Clubs} followed by the {10-Hearts}. His opponent burst out in laughter.

"You f*** face!" Moreira de Melo laughed, "You f*****."

Grassi played up his innocence, as a large crowd gathered for the all-in showdown.

The flop brought out {9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{J-Spades}, and the intensity grew, as Grassi flopped a set versus a gutshot straight draw.

Gu - excited for Grassi - went in to hug and congratulate him, "You win!"

"Don't touch me!" Grassi yelled, "You are unlucky."

The turn brought the {Q-Spades}, and Grassi's opponent filled up his straight.

"I told you, Don't touch me!" Grassi cried out, as Gu watched his neighbor's stack evaporate.

The river was the meaningless {7-Spades}, and Grassi was left with just 1,300 chips, which he lost on the very next hand.

Grassi's EPT Grand Final roller coaster ride ends in the fourth level, and with that, peace and quiet returns to Table 25 in the Salle Des Etoiles.

'I Think It Must Be Christmas'

Nível 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Albert Daher
Albert Daher

Lebanon's Albert Daher, who is looking to cross the $1 million mark in career tournament earnings here in Monaco with $983,813 to date, is off to a hot start in that effort, and into the early chip lead, thanks to two massive hands early.

Daher turned a jack-high flush against a preflop five bettor who was willing to get it in with pocket fives. After collecting his full stack, Daher kept his foot on the gas, raising it up to 400 preflop from early position, and calling when a player behind made it 825.

Daher checked the {2-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop, but called when his opponent continued for 1,700. The turn came the {7-Diamonds} and Daher led out for 3,900. His opponent jammed in for 42,200 and after asking why he bet so much, Daher called with the {6-Clubs}{7-Clubs} two pair.

His opponent had the {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} and was drawing dead. The {a-Clubs} river was too little too late and as he hit the rail, Daher moved into chip lead position here in Level 2.

"I think it must be Christmas," said Daher, whose biggest career score was €189,000 earned in a €10,000 High Roller at EPT Deauville in Season 10. "All these gifts."
