Anthony Chimkovitch Bags Chiplead After Day 3 of the 2016 EPT 13 Barcelona Main Event

Day 3 of the record-breaking 2016 PokerStars.es EPT Season 13 Barcelona €5,300 Main Event started off with 294 players who were already in the money when play resumed. Due to the new payout structure, the bubble broke late on Day 2, guaranteeing the remaining players at least €5,630. With the min cash in the bag, everyone in Casino Barcelona had set their sights on the life-changing first price of €1,122,800.

After five levels of 90 minutes, it was Belgium's Anthony Chimkovitch who bagged the overall chip lead with 1,825,000. On his way to his chip lead, Chimkovitch eliminated Chance Kornuth in spectacular fashion. Kornuth made a move with his pair of queens. Chimkovitch, however, held a pair of kings and knocked out the American high roller in one of the biggest pots of the day.

The day started at a fast pace right away. With no pay jumps in sight, players busted in quick fashion. Marko Neumann, Martin Acre Llobrera, Ilari Sahamies, and longtime Day 2 leader Ognyan Dimov were among the first to fall. Mike McDonald, who received the EPT 12 Platinum Player of the Year award yesterday, saw his run in the Main Event come to an end when his pair of nines wasn't good against Vasili Firsau's pair of aces.

Connor Drinan, Govert Metaal, Leo Margets,Kitty Kuo, Harrison Gimbel, Sam Chartier, Kimmo Kurko, Gleb Tremzin, Darryll Fish, and Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody all failed to make Day 4 as well.

Long time Norwegian professional and former EPT champion Andreas Hoivold saw his Main Event come to an abrupt end in a huge pot versus Marco Caza. Hoivoid's pair and flush draw didn't get there against Caza's top two pair, skyrocketing Caza to the top of the standings. Caza finished the day in second place, bagging 1,520,000.

Besides Chimkovitch and Caza, a total of 98 players made their way to Day 4. Team PokerStars' last standing man is none other than Jason Mercier who sat at the feature table for a long time. Mercier bagged 1,006,000, making him a dangerous contender going forward.

A lot of other notables still have a shot at the seven-figure price, including Nuno Capucho (1,375,000), Adam Owen (857,000), Bryn Kenney (728,000), 2016 November Niner Vojtech Ruzicka (680,000), Sam Grafton (650,000), Byron Kaverman (442,000), Georgios ZIsimopoulos (438,000), Jason Koon (424,000), Mark Roovers (392,000), and Eugene Katchalov (215,000)

Action resumes tomorrow at 12 pm noon local time, when a maximum of five levels of 90 minutes each will be played. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to provide all the action until a winner is crowned on Sunday.

Simon Lofberg Busts Kimmo Kurko and Sam Chartier

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Sam Chartier
Sam Chartier

Simon Lofberg, who had previously doubled through Sam Chartier, has become the next chip millionaire. On the same table, Nuno Capucho, who had been stalling on the bubble one day ago, is on the best way to get there too, while Kimmo Kurko and Sam Chartier were sent to the rail in consecutive hands.

Hand 1

First, Lofberg raised from early position and Kurko shoved from the button with his below-average stack, Lofberg called.

Kurko: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Lofberg: {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}

The board ran out {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{K-Clubs} and Kurko, who had finished second in this very event in Season 10, was drawing dead on the turn already.

Hand 2

One hand later, Lofberg raised again, to 18,000, and Chartier shoved from the button for 155,000 to receive a quick call.

Chartier: {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Lofberg: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

There was no help on the board of {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{2-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Chartier also headed to the rail.

Jake Cody Eliminated by a Niner

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

Jake Cody (pictured) has just been eliminated from the EPT Main Event here in Barcelona and he suffered the beat at the hands of November Niner Vojtech Ruzicka. As Jake moved to the rail, he told us about the hand.

"He opened in the cut-off and I shoved for twenty big blinds with Ace-Nine on the button. He had {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and held."

Cody may be out but Ruzicka has a serious chance to add to winnings he knows are coming in November by running deep here in Spain. He now has 510,000 to work with, marginally over the average with 120 players left.

Mihai Niste Eliminated by Jason Mercier

Jason Mercier

Mihai Niste raised to 16,000 under the gun and it folded to Jason Mercier who eyed Nista's stack before he three-bet to 47,000.

It folded back to Niste who four-bet all in for 179,000 and Mercier called.

Mihiai Niste: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Jason Mercier: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

The flop came {8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, with no help for Mercier. The {10-Spades} on the turn meant that Mercier would have to hit an ace or a king on the river to eliminate Niste.

The river was the {a-Clubs} and Niste was eliminated by one of the reigning EPT champions still in the Main Event field.

Chance Kornuth Eliminated In Gigantic Clash

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Chance Kornuth
Chance Kornuth

From middle position, Anthony Chimkovitch raised to 16,000. Florian Bordet called, leaving himself with just 50,000 behind. Danny Tang called on the button, and Chance Kornuth defended his big blind.

The flop was {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Kornuth checked. Chimkovitch bet 27,000, Bordet folded, and Tang called. Kornuth took some time, then check-raised to 115,000, which got called by Chimkovitch. Now it was Tang's turn to take some time, and he took nearly three minutes before slowly releasing his hand.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and after thirty seconds, Kornuth shoved all in for 371,000. Chimkovitch didn't seem too pleased with the situation at hand, but flicked in a quick call regardless.

In the biggest pot of the tournament so far, the following hands were shown down:

Chance Kornuth: {Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Anthony Chimkovitch: {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}

Upon seeing Kornuth's hand, the table let out a collective gasp. With just second pair, the American found himself suddenly at risk for his tournament life. Kornuth was looking for a queen or eight to pull the upset, but the river {5-Hearts} wasn't one of his outs. Chimkovitch raked in the monstrous pot and is the new chipleader.

Andrey Sharonov Eliminated by Diego Zeiter

Andrey Sharonov raised to 14,000 from early position and Diego Zeiter defended in the big blind.

The flop came {j-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Zeiter checked to Sharonov who bet 16,000. Zeiter called.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and Zeiter lead for 30,000. Sharonov moved all in for just over 100,000, and Zeiter called.

Sharonov turned over {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for top pair, but Zeiter had him drawing dead after having turned the nut-straight with {a-Spades}{q-Spades}. The river was the meaningless {q-Clubs} and the overall day 1 chip-leader Sharonov headed to the payout cage.

Gone Girl(s) - Kuo and Margets Eliminated

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Kitty Kuo
Kitty Kuo

In the space of a couple of minutes, both Kitty Kuo and Leo Margets have been eliminated from the Main Event.

First, Kitty Kuo three-bet all in against Kestutis Gecevicius with {a-Spades}{q-Spades} for around 100,000. Unfortunately for her, Gecevicius held {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}, and it was good as the board ran out {k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, and Kuo headed to the exit.

Meanwhile, Leo Margets was getting her remaining chips in against fellow Spaniard Ramon Miguel Munoz with {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} against her opponent's {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Unfortunately for Margets, the flop contained an ace as it came {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and Margets joined Kuo ont he rail.

The flop was showing {Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} and Marco Caza bet 15,000. Andreas Hoivold made it 45,000 to go and Caza then squeezed to 105,000. Hoivold shoved for more than 500,000 and Caza called to create the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

Hoivold {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Caza {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}

Hoivold had middle pair and the flush draw, while Caza showed top two pair. On the {2-Clubs} turn, nothing changed, and the {J-Hearts} river even gave Caza a full house and eliminated the 2007 EPT Dortmund champion.

It was unclear when the chips went in, but the outcome was a smiling Anthony Edouard Chimkovitch with the words "that's how I run today" on his lips. Latest casualty of his hot run had been Thomas Eychenne with {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}, while Chimkovitch had the {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}.

The board ran out {J-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and the full house gave Chimkovitch the top spot and honor of first chip millionaire on Day 3.

Mike McDonald Busts to Vasili Firsau

Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Among the former EPT champions still in contention was also Mike McDonald, but his challenge to become the second two-time winner has just come to an end.

Vasili Firsau raised to 10,000 from middle position and McDonald called in the big blind. On the {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop, McDonald checked and Firsau continued for 10,000. McDonald called and both checked the {5-Diamonds} turn. On the {3-Diamonds} river, McDonald checked again and Firsau pushed all in.

McDonald, who had 38,500 left, tanked for some time and eventually called it off with the {K-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. Firsau held {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} and that was it for the former EPT Dortmund champion.
