Nicolas Chouity Leads After Day 2 of the 2016 EPT13 Barcelona Main Event

Day 2 of the record-breaking 2016 PokerStars.es EPT Season 13 Barcelona €5,300 Main Event saw more than 900 players return to tables at the Casino Barcelona and another 28 hopefuls opted to buy in with a fresh stack of 30 big blinds.

This boosted the overall attendance to 1,785 entries, and the prize pool of €8,657,250 was to be shared among the top 359 spots. The minimum cash is worth €5,630, while the winner walks home with a life-changing payday of €1,122,800.

Before the cards went back underway, the EPT's Neil Johnson announced news about the expansion of the PokerStars brand on the live circuit with the Championship and Festival series at various old and new destinations such as Panama, Macau, Atlantic City and Barcelona - promising more games, more days and more events.

Once play resumed, the seat open came in steady and at a frantic pace. Paul Hoefer lost with ace-queen to the pocket queens of fellow German Julian Stuer, while Xuan Liu turned two pair and ran into the slow-played set of aces by Wael Sarkis. Former PCA champion Dominik Panka got three-outered by Alexander Lakhov and German wunderkind Fedor Holz, who won the €50,000 Super High Roller a few days ago, lost with top pair to an overpair.

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Yaxi Zhu, Janne "Savjz" Mikkonen, Leo Fernandez, Theo Jorgensen, George Danzer and defending Joh Juanda all fell before the money. Alexandros Kolonias and Jeremy Nock put their hopes on spades, but Adem Marjanovic had tens for the overpair to hold up and join the big stacks. At almost the same time, Niall Farrell played a huge pot with ace-king and Alin Grasu looked him up with queens to bust the EPT12 Malta winner. Other former EPT champions to join the rail before the money included David Vamplew, Oleksii Khoroshenin, Dzmitry Urbanovich, Michael Tureniec, and Steve O'Dwyer also all ran out of chips before the hand-for-hand mode began.

In the last few seasons, the money was usually reached in the first few levels of Day 3, however, thanks to the new 20% payout structure, the bubble in fact burst in the middle of level 14. Yann Pineau emerged as bubble boy after calling all in with a pair of tens on a nine-high board only to see Neculai Macovei turn over a full house with five-three. More than 60 players were eliminated in the money in the last half hour still, including Fatima Moreira de Melo, Maria Lampropulos, Per Linde, Alen Bilic, Chris Moorman, Pablo Gordillo and Ivan "negriin" Luca.

Only 294 hopefuls advanced to Day 2 after six 75-minute levels and EPT6 Grand Final champion Nicolas Chouity claimed the lead with impressive 559,000. He is closely followed by Austria's Adem Marjanovic (542,500) and Uri Reichenstein (518,000) also put more than half a million into his bag. Other big stacks and notables for Day 3 include IPT7 Malta champion Georgios Zisimopoulos (462,000), Martin Kabrhel (458,500), aforementioned Alin Grasu (437,000); Gleb Tremzin (428,000), and Diego Zeiter (383,500).

Team PokerStars is represented by the Team Pros Jake Cody (284,500), Jason Mercier (266,500) and Felipe Ramos (63,000), while Team Online's Mikhail Shalamov ran pretty well and bagged up 377,500. Some further EPT champions through to Day 3 were Harrison Gimbel (216,500), Kent Lundmark (179,000), Ognyan Dimov (173,500), Michael Eiler (167,500), Mike McDonald (124,000), Ronny Kaiser (99,600), Dimitar Danchev (80,000) and Davidi Kitai (57,000). The 2016 November Niner Vojtech Ruzicka will return with 72,000.

Action resumes tomorrow at 12 p.m. noon local time when another five levels of 90 minutes each are scheduled. The full chip counts after Day 2 and redraw for Day 3 will be published as soon as the PokerNews live reporting team receives them.

Ivan Luca

Ivan Luca had an above-average stack for most of the day, but ultimately fell just before the end of Day 2. According to Jerome Sgorrano, he first tried to bluff the Belgian and then called a raise to 7,000 by Vojtech Ruzicka. Kestutis Gecevicius three-bet to 23,000 and Ruzicka folded.

Luca shoved for 55,000 and Gecevicius reluctantly called it off with {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. The Argentinian showed pocket aces and Gecevicius flopped top pair, turned two pair and rivered a full house.

Yann Pineau Is The Main Event Bubble Boy

Yann Pineau bubbles EPT 13 Barcelona €5,300 Main Event 2016

Yann Pineau opened in middle position, and Neculai Macovei three-bet to 18,500 on the button. Pineau called, followed by a check from both players on a flop of {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}.

On the {3-Diamonds} turn, Pineau led out with a bet of 22,000, which got called by Macovei. The river was the {5-Clubs} and Pineau checked. Macovei moved all in, putting the Frenchman on the bubble at risk for his tournament life.

Pineau, who had a little over 60,000 left, went deep in the tank. The camera's, players and media staff all swarmed around Table 4 to witness the situation unfold. Nearly five minutes passed by until Pineau finally decided on a call.

The hands remained closed, as the action on the other tables wasn't done yet. The buzz of an all-in-and-a-call situation circled throughout the room, drawing even more people to the table. After a few more minutes, a densely packed crowd finally saw the hand going to showdown.

Pineau showed {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for a pair of tens, but his dreams of winning EPT Barcelona came to a screeching halt as Macovei tabled the unexpected {5-Diamonds}{3-Spades} for a full house. The Frenchman goes home empty-handed, the other 359 players are guaranteed at least €5,630.

Janne "Savjz" Mikkonen Eliminated by Adam Owen

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Janne Mikkonen
Janne Mikkonen

Adam Owen raised to 6,500 from middle position. The player in the cutoff called, as did professional Hearthstone player Janne "Savjz" Mikkonen on the button. The blinds both folded.

The flop came {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades} and Owen bet 9,000. The cutoff folded, but Mikkonen called. The turn was the {k-Clubs} and Owen thought before announcing all in. Mikkonen called instantly and tabled {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a flush.

Owen winced, and turned over {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for two-pair, but with a flush draw that would eliminate his opponent if it hit.

The river was the {8-Clubs} and the table let out a murmur as Mikkonen got to his feet.

"Fish!" said tablemate Danny Tang, and Owen smiled in return.

"When he called instantly, I was thinking 'Please don't have a house!'" said Owen has he raked in his chips. He is now at around 200,000 in chips

The action started with a raise by Jonathan Pigeon to 6,500 and Murad Akhundov on the button, Adam Owen in the small blind and Joel Nystedt in the big blind called. On the {Q-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop, the action checked to Akhundov and he moved all in. Owen folded, Nystedt asked for a count,

The all in was for 60,000 and the Swede then called, Pigeon folded and said in table chat he folded aces.

Akhundov: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Nystedt: {A-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

The {5-Clubs} turn left Akhundov drawing dead, and the {K-Spades} river was insignificant.

Pratyush Buddiga Hero-Calls to Chop Pot

Pratyush Buddiga - EPT 13 Barcelona €25,500 Single-Day High Roller Winner
Pratyush Buddiga - EPT 13 Barcelona €25,500 Single-Day High Roller Winner

Pratyush Buddiga raised from middle position and got two callers: Sebastian Malec on the button, and the player in the big blind.

The flop came {q-Clubs}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts} and it checked to Malec who bet 8,500. The big blind folded and Buddiga called. The turn was the {3-Spades} and Buddiga checked to Malec who surveyed Buddiga's stack, before betting 25,000. Again, Buddiga called.

The river was the {4-Spades} and Buddiga checked for a third time and Malec then announced all in, with his stack more than double Buddiga's. The €25,000 Single-Day High Roller finished at 3am, with Buddiga emerging as the overall winner after a deal, and Buddiga was willing to give this some thought.

After around five minutes of thought, Buddiga called and watched as Malec tabled {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. Buddiga hastily turned over {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades} for the same hand and split the pot with his opponent.

"A good sweat, huh?" asked a tablemate. Buddiga could only muster up a smile in response.

Cody Flips Spindler Out

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody is up to 131,500 after winning a flip against Benny Spindler. Both men are former EPT champions, with Spindler having won EPT London almost five years ago and Cody having scooped the Deauville Main Event way back in Season 6.

Only the British legend has the chance to get a second EPT win under his belt here after Cody's pocket jacks overcame Spindler's {A-}{K-}. An ace on the flop looked like the German might be doubling up, but a jack on the turn led to Spindler losing and Cody climbing up the chip-counts.

Alexandros Kolonias
Alexandros Kolonias

On the flop of {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}, things escalated between Jeremy Nock in the big blind, Alexandros Kolonias from under the gun and big stack Adem Marjanovic. Nock ended up all in and Kolonias as well as Marjanovic called to see the {7-Clubs} on the turn. Kolonias checked, Marjanovic moved all in and Kolonias was sent into the think tank.

Eventually, Marjanovic called the clock on him and with seconds left, Kolonias called it off for his last 40,000.

Nock: {A-Spades}{9-Spades}
Kolonias: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}
Marjanovic: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}

"Oh wow, Spade one time," Nock demanded, but the {4-Clubs} river was a blank to eliminate Nock and Kolonias.
