Sammartino Leads Final Table of EPT11 Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Dario Sammartino

Day 2 of the 2015 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller saw five players take advantage of late registration, which meant 49 players were in action at the start of play. It also meant the total field swelled to 71 entries (58 unique/13 reentries) — up from last year's 62 entries (50 unique/12 reentries) – and created a prize pool of €6,888,420.

Heading into the third and final day of play, Italy's Dario Sammartino is in the best position to capture the €2,015,000, as he leads the final table of eight with 4.48 million. Others still in contention include EPT Malta High Roller champ Dzmitry Urbanovich, Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel, and 2014 WCOOP winner Fedor "CrownUpGuy" Holz, just to name a few.

Day 2 kicked off with a bang as both Stephen Chidwick and Jason Mercier fell in the first hand, albeit at separate tables. Before long, they had company on the rail in the forms of Antonio Esfandiari, Justin Bonomo, Philipp Gruissem and Leon Tsoukernik (who failed to make the most of his buy-in after winning it from Dan Cates).

Defending champ Daniel Colman, who won €1,539,300 in this event one year ago, fell in Level 11 (5,000/10,000/1,000). He shoved all in from the button for his last 105,000 and Mike "Timex" McDonald called from the small blind.

Colman: {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
McDonald: {k-Spades}{q-Diamonds}

Colman had kicker issues, and while he paired it on the {7-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop, McDonald also paired his queen. Colman began to get out of his chair after the dealer burned and turned the {4-Diamonds}, and then took his leave from the tournament after the useless {3-Clubs} was put out on the river.

Others who fell on Day 2 were Steve O'Dwyer, Sam Trickett, Phil Ivey, Isaac Haxton, Daniel Negreanu, George Danzer (who was playing his first-ever Super High Roller), and Ole Schemion, the EPT10 Player of the Year.

Schemion actually fell in a controversial hand – the biggest of the tournament up to that point — in which some believe Sammartino nit-rolled the German wunderkind. It happened when just a dozen players remained and Sammartino opened the button to 55,000 in Level 15 (12,000/24,000/3,000). Schemion three-bet to 185,000 from the big blind, Sammartino called in position, and the flop came down {Q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}. Schemion bet 180,000, Sammartino called, and the {7-Spades} landed on the turn. Schemion bet 382,000, and again Sammartino called.

Things got really interesting after the {4-Diamonds} hit the river as Schemion moved all in for 1,121,000. Instantly, Sammartino let out a big sigh, moving his hands to his face like he couldn't believe what just happened.

"Pfff!" Sammartino sighed again. His pained face became visible after he moved his hands from his face to his hair and then up into the air. Sammartino didn't like what he was seeing, and made no secret about it.

Another couple minutes later, Sammartino still hadn't made up his mind. Schemion, still with a blank stare and arms folded, didn't flinch when Sammartino waved his hand in front of him to try to get a reaction.

"Ole, do you know what I have?" Sammartino asked Schemion after waving his hand in front of his face to garner a reaction. "Second nuts, I mean third nuts?" he corrected himself. The third nuts would be pocket jacks, but was it possible the Italian was tanking for this long with the second-best full house?

After another couple of moments, Schemion asked for the clock. The floor informed Sammartino he had one minute to act on his hand. With about 20 seconds left in the countdown, Sammartino grabbed a stack of T25,000 chips and moved them over the line to indicate a call for his tournament life.

Schemion confidently tabled the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}, just about 100% sure he was going to win the biggest pot of the tournament and continue as a big chip leader. To everyone's surprise, though, the aces weren't good. Sammartino showed the {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}, indeed having the third nuts, and now it was Schemion doing the sighing. The German's face was that of disbelief, partly because he was surprised by such a long tank by Sammartino and partly because after all the tanking he thought his hand was good.

After all the counting was done, Schemion was left with 26,000, which would disappear in the very next hand.

Here's what Sammartino had to say about the hand after the day was done.

A short time later, just 10 players remained, which meant they were on the money bubble. That is when Piotr Franczak suffered a particularly bad beat to finish as the bubble boy.

Piotr Franczak bubbles the Super High Roller after suffering a bad beat with aces to Troyanovskiy's threes

At that point, the final nine players combined to the final table to play until one of them fell. That man ended up being Vladimir Troyanovskiy, who took his leave in ninth place for €199,620 after getting his aces cracked by Igor Kurganov's pocket kings.

Here is the final table preview video.

The final eight players will return at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday to play down to a winner. The final table will be broadcast on eptlive.com on a one-hour delay, and of course PokerNews will be providing live updates right here in our live blog.

Vladimir Troyanovskiy Eliminated in 9th Place (€199,620)

Igor Kurganov opened under the gun for 95,000 and action rapidly folded to Vladimir Troyanovskiy in the small blind. The Russian high roller three-bet to 235,000 and the big blind folded.

Action was back on Kurganov and he four-bet to 475,000. Troyanovskiy shoved all in not much later for 1,540,000, Kurganov instantly called.

Vladimir Troyanovskiy: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}
Igor Kurganov: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The flop was a harmless {8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. The {K-Spades} on the turn did make a huge difference though, doing to Troyanovskiy what Troyanovskiy himself did to Franczak just minutes ago.

The {4-Spades} on the river was a blank and just like that, the tournament was down to it's official final table of 8. Seiver, the absolute short stack, just received a €62,180 unexpected present.

"Oh My God... It Was a One Outer"

In the first hand back from the break, action folded to Vladimir Troyanovskiy on the button and he raised to 500,000, essentially moving all in. Piotr Franczak, who if you recall made a name for himself at the EPT Malta after notching several big score, was in the big blind and wasted little time in calling off for 340,000.

Troyanovskiy: {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Franczak: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

Franczak woke up with the goods, and he was primed to double even after the {10-Spades}{q-Clubs}{k-Clubs} flop. Unfortunately for him, disaster struck when the dealer burned and turned the {3-Clubs}. Franczak still had outs, but he missed as the {6-Spades} blanked on the river.

"Oh my god, I had a three," someone at the table admitted after the hand. "It was a one outer."

It was a particularly brutal beat for Franczak, who missed out on a minimum €199,620 payday.

Sammartino Doubles in Biggest Hand of the Tournament; Schemion Crippled

Dario Sammartino opened the button to 55,000, and Ole Schemion three-bet to 185,000 from the big blind. Sammartino called in position.

Instantly, Sammartino let out a big sigh, moving his hands to his face like he couldn't believe what just happened. It did happen, Schemion had jammed, and Sammartino clearly wasn't happy about it.

"Pfff!' Sammartino sighed again. His pained face became visible after he moved his hands from his face to his hair and then up into the air. Sammartino didn't like what he was seeing, and made no secret about it.

Danzer Busts His First-Ever Super High Roller

Nível 15 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
George Danzer
George Danzer

Reigning World Series of Poker Player of the Year and Team PokerStars Pro George Dazner was playing in his first-ever Super High Roller, but his adventure just came to an end in 14th place.

It happened when Igor Kurganov opened with a standard raise and Danzer three-bet jammed from the cutoff for 239,000 total. Action folded back to Kurganov, and he wasted little time in making the call.

Kurganov: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Danzer: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}

It was a classic flip, and all Danzer had to do was hold to score the double. He held strong on the {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}, but then the dealer crushed his dreams by delivering the {Q-Spades} on the turn. Another lady, the {Q-Clubs}, peeled off on the river to give Kurganov queens full, and that put an end to Danzer's run.

Negreanu Done in by the Wunderkind

Nível 14 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Dzmitry Urbanovich opened for 40,000 from early position only to have Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu three-bet all in from the cutoff. Ole Schemion then four-bet all in over the top from the button, both blinds folded, and Urbanovich showed the {a-Clubs}{q-Spades} before folding.

Negreanu: {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}
Schemion: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

"Ok, I'll just catch a five," Negreanu said optimistically. "How about a straight?"

"Kid Poker" got excited when he seen the {4-Diamonds} in the window, but his enthusiasm quickly subsided when it was followed by the {Q-Hearts} and {4-Hearts} to give Schemion a flopped full house. The {10-Clubs} turn left Negreanu drawing dead, and the {K-Clubs} river made his elimination official.

"Oh well," Negreanu said before exiting in 18th place. "Good luck kids, play well."

Franczak Looking Oh So Strong

Nível 14 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Piotr Franczak
Piotr Franczak

Max Altergott opened for 42,000 from the hijack and Piotr Franczak in the big blind three-bet to 92,000. Altergott made the call.

Both players checked on {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, and the {9-Diamonds} hit the turn. Franczak made a bet of 80,000 and Altergott called.

The {2-Clubs} completed the board and Franczak thought about it for some time.

"Bluffing is difficult when you don't rep much" Altergott said with a smile.

A minute passed and then Franczak decided to shove for 375,000 anyway.

Altergott was a bit surprised and mumbled "That's almost all I got."

Altergott studied his opponent for a bit, before commenting "You look so strong!"

"That's my problem" Franczak replied. "I give away too many tells. When I have something strong, people usually fold. That's why I have sunglasses" Franczak smiled as he put on his pair of Chanel sunglasses.

"Ok, ok" Altergott smiled as he folded. Franczak mucked.

Haxton Falls to Seidel in Massive Pot Just Before the Break

Nível 12 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

In the last hand before the break, Team Online's Isaac Haxton raised to 31,000 from the button only to have Erik Seidel three-bet to what appeared to be 75,000 from the small blind. Haxton made the call and the flop came down {j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, which saw Seidel continue for 113,000.

Haxton made the call and then both players checked the {7-Spades} turn. When the {Q-Clubs} completed the board on the river, Seidel led out for 115,000 and Haxton popped it to 515,000, leaving himself roughly 275,000 behind. Seidel, who barely had him covered, paused for 30 seconds or so and then announced that he was all in.

Haxton hit the tank hard as the clocked ticked several minutes into the break. Haxton leaned back in his chair, nibbled on his nail, and at the end of it all made the call.

Seidel tabled the {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs} for the rivered nuts, and Haxton revealed his inferior two pair with the {q-Spades}{j-Spades}.

"Really well played," Haxton complimented his opponent before the dealer verified the stacks.
