Jason Lavallee Finishes Second in Chips as 47 Advance from Day 1

While the 2014 PokerStars.it European Poker Tour Sanremo Main Event was busy playing down to the final 16 on one side of the room at Casino Sanremo, the €10,300 High Roller – the last with that buy-in in Season 10 – was just kicking off on the other.

Everyone was curious to see what the stop could pull, and the 103 entries (88 unique/15 reentries) that turned out surpassed most expectations. What’s more, that number could go up as players are allowed to register and reenter up until the start of Day 2.

After ten one-hour levels of play on Day 1, the field was whittled down to 47 players with Alexander Kopylkov and his stack of 331,400 leading the way. Not too far behind is Jason Lavallee with 308,400. If you recall, Lavallee defeated a field of 157 entries to win the EPT10 London High Roller for €357,700 earlier this season.

Lavallee got a good portion of his chips courtesy of David “MissOracle” Yan. It happened in Level 8 (500/1,000/100) when, after a raise to 2,300 and a call, Lavallee three-bet to 7,800 in the small blind and Yan four-bet to 17,000 in the big blind. The other two opponents folded and Lavallee five-bet to 29,800, which Yan called.

On the {2-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop, Lavallee continued for 18,000 and Yan called. The {5-Diamonds} on the turn saw Lavallee continue for another 32,000 and Yan moved all in for just above 50,000. Lavallee made the call with the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and Yan turned over the {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}. The {8-Spades} river sent Yan to the rail, though he wouldn’t be gone for long.

You see, the EPT10 Sanremo High Roller featured a single reentry option, and quite a few players exercised it. Unfortunately that decision didn’t pay off for some. Among those to fire two bullets and miss were the aforementioned Yan (who was eliminated by Lavallee for a second time), Nick Maimone, Adrian Mateos, Sorel Mizzi, Aleksandr Denisov, and Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel.

Of course not everyone misfired their second bullet. Among those to bust, reenter, and then make it through to Day 2 were Jose Carlos Garcia (130,200), Tamer Kamel (101,900), and Jean-Noel Thorel (76,000). Meanwhile, some players had luck on their first bullet including Ognjen Sekularac (232,400), Carl Carlsson (214,600), Artem Litvinov (111,000), Yann Dion (109,500), Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (73,200), Mickey Petersen (47,700), Ami Barer (38,500), and current EPT10 Player of the Year leader Ole Schemion (170,300).

On the flip side, some players who busted Day 1 and chose not to reenter – at least not yet – were Olivier Busquet, Davidi Kitai, Dominik Panka, Chris Oliver, Michael Kanaan, Joni Jouhkinmainen, and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst, who is currently second on the EPT10 POY leaderboard.

Selbst got off to a hot start by winning a big pot against Mizzi, and she talked to PokerNews on a break about the hand as well as the POY race against Schemion. Give it a listen:

Loosli Triples; Sekularac Eliminates Metaal in Same Hand

A big pot just went down that resulted in the elimination of Govert Metaal.

It began when Martin Jacobson opened for 1,600 under the gun and Sylvain Loosli shoved all in for 13,100. Ognjen Sekularac was next to act and called, which inspired Metaal to four-bet to 29,8000 from the big blind.

Jacobson got out of the way, Sekularac moved all in, and Metaal snap-called off for around 85,000 total.

Metaal threw up his arms as if to say, "What can you do?" Meanwhile, the short-stacked Loosli seemed thrilled that his ace was live.

The {7-Spades}{9-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop was no help to anyone, but the {2-Hearts} turn did pair Loosli, though he would need more on the river to stay alive. Wouldn't you know it, the {A-Spades} peeled off to give him two pair and the triple. However, the side pot is where the big money was, and that was pushed Sekularac's way.

Selbst Meets Her Entity

Griffin Benger raised to 3,400 and Vanessa Selbst in the big blind made it 7,100. Selbst had a great start in the tournament with an early double up but since then it has gone downhill.

With that last three-bet she induced an all in to get her last 25 big blinds into the middle of the table before the end of play. Of course she had the reentry option in her back pocket.

Benger, also known as "Flush Entity" online, did her the favor and moved all in with the {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Selbst made the call with the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} and the {J-Spades}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{10-Hearts} board sent her to the rail. She then asked the floor until what time she can reenter before exiting the tournament area.

The answer is up until the start of Day 2. Given her urge to earn so POY points, we've no doubt that she'll be back.

The action folded to Ami Barer in the small blind and he raised to 825. One seat over, Griffin Benger clicked it back to 1,500 and Barer called. On the {7-Spades}{8-Hearts}{Q-Spades} flop Barer check-called 1,200 and did so again on the {3-Spades} turn for 3,000.

The {2-Hearts} river completed the board and now Barer check-raised from 6,500 to 16,425. Benger, sporting his Toronto Blue Jays cap, moved all in for just over 50,000 and that sent Barer deep into the think tank. He stared at his opponent, the board, and checked his cards again. A smile emerged on his face, then frustration once again.

Barer eventually made the call and Benger showed {A-Spades}{8-Spades} and his opponent was forced to reveal {6-Spades}{2-Spades} as it was an all-in showdown. "If you had folded, I would have shown you the {A-Spades}," said Benger.

Kitai Spends A LOT of Time in the Tank Against Duhamel

We've seen some epic tanks in our day, and Davidi Kitai's recent one is up there. When we arrived Kitai was in the tank with around 30,000 pulled into the pot on a board reading {8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{a-Hearts}.

His opponent, Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel, had moved all in with the bigger stack, and Kitai was debating what to do with his remaining 21,500. We're not sure how long Kitai was thinking about it before we arrived, but we do know that he spent ten minutes in the tank while we stood idly by.

"Will you show me if I fold?" Kitai eventually asked. Duhamel, who remained fixated in the same pose, did not answer.

Eventually someone called time on Kitai, which gave him one more minute to act. The floorman, Luca, counted down the clock, and Kitai stared at Duhamel during the last ten seconds.

10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

Kitai did not call. The clock expired and his hand was ruled dead. He then showed he had been taking so much time with the {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} for trips. Duhamel declined to show his cards.

Meanwhile, as that hand was playing out a short-stacked Sorel Mizzi, who was crippled earlier in the day by Vanessa Selbst, was eliminated from the tournament.

Yurasov Continues to Climb

Dmitry Yurasov has a reputation as being an active player, which means when he's playing well and catching cards he's a formidable foe.

In a recent hand, Yurasov opened for 700 from the hijack and received calls from Steve O'Dwyer and Ludovic Lacay on the button and small blind respectively. When the flop came down {10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}, Lacay checked, Yurasov bet 1,200, and O'Dwyer called.

After Lacay folded, the {Q-Clubs} turned and Yurasov bet 2,800. O'Dwyer called once again to see the {10-Clubs} appear on the river. Yurasov slowed down with a check, and O'Dwyer wasted little time in tossing out a blue T5,000 chip.

Yurasov thought for a bit before making the call with the {a-Diamonds}{3-Spades} for ace high, and it proved a wise choice as O'Dwyer had missed his straight draw with the {k-Clubs}{j-Spades}.

As you can see, Lacay is on a short stack. We're not sure how it happened, but since Yurasov has two pink T25,000 chips and Lacay has none, we're guessing the two must have clashed in an earlier pot.

Welcome to Day 1 of the PokerStars.it EPT Sanremo €10,300 High Roller

The PokerStars.it EPT Sanremo Season 10 is entering its closing weekend, and while the Main Event is playing down from 39 to the final 16 today — which you can follow by clicking here — it's also the day the €10,000 High Roller kicks off.

The three-day event is the last €10,000 High Roller of the season as Monte Carlo's features buy-ins of €25,000 and €100,000. Of course those hefty buy-ins attract a certain type of player, whereas the "more affordable" €10,000 often attracts hopeful amateurs looking to take their shot at poker glory. As such, we expect a slew of Italian players to enter the field.

On Thursday night, a satellite for this event was held that attracted 97 players, 28 rebuys and 83 add-ons for €100,880 prize pool. That awarded nine seats into the High Roller — one of which went to former PCA runner-up Chris Oliver — with tenth place getting a €8,180 consolation prize.

In addition, we should see some establish pros such as Ole Schemion and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst, two players who're currently engaged in a heated race for EPT10 Player of the Year. Schemion currently sits atop the leaderboard, but Selbst has been doing her best to close the gap. We'll be sure to bring you an update on that race later today.

Others we expect to see are Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier and Jonathan Duhamel; Team Online's Marc-Andre Ladouceur and Mickey Petersen; EPT9 Barcelona third-place finisher Joni Jouhkimainen; and former High Roller champs Thomas Muhlocker and Dominik Panka, the latter of which was recently featured in an in-depth piece on PokerNews.
