Benny Spindler Leads a Record-Breaking €25,000 High Roller Field

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Benny Spindler
Benny Spindler

The €25,000 High Roller saw a staggering 158 players enter, 37 more than last year. A total of 47 players used their option to reenter after going bust on the first day, which made for 205 total entries thus far. Registration for this tournament will remain open until the start of Day 2, so that number might grow even more. It's still shy 42 entries from $25,000 High Roller at the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, which had 247 runners, but we're talking Euros as the buy-in here, so the first place might be bigger.

As expected, every table was filled with recognizable faces. There were a bunch of Team PokerStars Pros in the mix with Daniel Negreanu, Alex Kravchenko, Eugene Katchalov, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and two-time European Poker Tour champion Vicky Coren Mitchell representing. Notable absentees were Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Vanessa Selbst, Richard Yong, and Paul Phua. However, with late registration still open, those guys might hop in tomorrow.

Without a doubt the most entertaining table was the one featuring Artem Litvinov and Viktor "Isildur1" Blom. Litvinov acted as he always does, full of bravado and with crazy antics. In one of the hands he played with Grospellier, the two decided to not look at their cards until the river. That turned out great for Litvinov, who found himself with jacks in the hole. He tried to make it a three-way blind hand the next hand, but Blom wasn't up for it. "No, no," laughed Blom, "This is too crazy!" We imagine stuff like this wouldn't be too crazy for him if it wasn't for the fact that he was extremely short stacked at that point.

Blom proved to be a very patient tournament player. The man that swings online like no other, with millions on the line and all in on one of many tables consistently, was very relaxed. At no point did he let his shoulders hang. He ended the day with 57,600, while Litvinov bagged 84,700.

One more player that got a lot of attention was Ole Schemion. After cashing both the €100,000 Super High Roller (7th - €307,000) and the €10,000 Main Event (44th - €24,400), could he go for the triple like he did in Barcelona and at PCA? He didn't start out that great, busting his first bullet after just a few hours of play. "I bluffed," he joked about his bust out hand. "I check-jammed the river." It turned out his opponent had flopped trips and wasn't willing to lay that down. Schemion promptly reentered.

On his second bullet, Schemion lasted a bit longer. He doesn't have the huge towers of chips we're used to seeing him behind, but it's still early and anything can happen. Schemion will start the second day tomorrow with 128,200 in chips, still well above average.

A remarkable thing happened in the second level of the day. With the board reading {3-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, Fabian Quoss tabled the {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts} at showdown against Johannes Strassmann. Strassmann mucked his cards, but immediately realized that wasn't the most optimal way to handle the situation seeing a flush was on the board. Luckily for Strassmann, it wasn't a big pot and they laughed it of. Strassmann and Quoss both wouldn't make the full 10 60-minute levels as they busted before the end of the day.

The biggest stack in the room is that of Benny Spindler. The German EPT London winner ended the day with 384,300 in chips. When we asked him how he got those, it was a tale of mostly winning small pots. To hear how Spindler amassed so many chips on Day 1a, check out his interview with PokerNews upon the completion of play:

Talal Shakerchi (173,100), Chenxiang Miao (231,400), Ismail Erkenov (355,600), and John Juanda (290,600) didn't do too bad either. [Removed:17] (127,500), Bryan Paris (119,100), and Dani Stern (69,000) all busted the Main Event earlier in the day and hopped right into the €25,000 High Roller. Last year's €25,000 High Roller winner, Steven Silverman, is among the final 17 in the Main Event, so he didn't enter this tournament, paving the way for a new champion.

The plan for Day 2 is to play down to a final table or another 10 levels. With the massive field here in Monte Carlo, 10 levels is more likely than the other. PokerNews will again supply you with all the updates, photos and interviews with the biggest players. With just about everyone in the field a big-time player, we'll be busy, busy, busy!

See you tomorrow for another exciting day on the felt.

Guillen Guts Peters

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
David Peters
David Peters

In the closing minute of the evening, David Peters got his stack of 68,400 all in preflop against Team PokerStars Pro Angel Guillen.

Guillen: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Peters: {a-}{k-}

It was a bad spot for Peters, and he was looking to catch an ace or some other combination of good cards. That didn't come to pass though as the board ran out a clean {3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Salman Behbehani Eliminated

Nível 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Salman Behbehani
Salman Behbehani

Alex Bilokur opened under the gun plus one to 2,500 and got no less than four callers: Salman Behbehani in the cutoff, Benny Spindler on the button, Marvin Rettenmaier (who just bought back in) in the small blind, and Aleksei Platonov in the big blind.

Rettenmaier checked the {Q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{8-Spades} flop but Platonov bet out 4,500. Initial raiser Bilokur folded, but Behbehani raised it up to 11,000. Spindler and Rettenmaier now folded and Platonov resolutely shoved all in for about 27,000 total. Behbehani made the call and they turned their cards on their backs.

Salman Behbehani: {A-Spades}{10-Spades}
Aleksei Platonov: {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

The {10-Hearts} on the turn didn't change anything and neither did the {3-Diamonds} on the river. Behbehani thought that he was out but in fact had 1,400 left.

That went in the next hand. Someone in front of him raised to 3,000 and Behbehani shoved his remaining 1,200 in. The big blind called and a side pot was created.

Eventually the initial raiser would bet on the turn after having checked the flop, forcing out the big blind. The board read {3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} by then and the big blind showed {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}. Behbehani opened his cards and said "It wás a race. At least I can say I went out on a flip" as he tabled {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}.

The {7-Hearts} on the river wasn't the six Behbehani was looking for and the American player made his exit.

The "Litvinov No Look"

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Artem Litvinov (photo: Main Event)
Artem Litvinov (photo: Main Event)

We didn't catch exactly what happened, but apparently Bertrand Grospellier and Artem Litvinov played a hand without looking at their cards. By the time the river was out there, the board read seven-high and Grospellier and Litvinov checked their cards after having checked dark presumably on the flop and turn.

Grospellier bet 1,000. "Ok, if I look I win small pot. Now I no look and win big pot, because I am going to raise and you call" said Litvinov. It played out exactly as Litvinov said, he raised to 3,000 and Grospellier called. Litviniv showed his {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} and indeed took it down, Grospellier mucked.

"Ok, next time we play no look with Viktor" said Litvinov, meaning that Grospellier on the button, he himself in the small blind, and Viktor Blom in the big blind would play blind if it was folded to them. Exactly that happened and Grospellier raised to 1,600 without taking a look at his cards.

"Ok" said Litvinov who reached for his chips. "No, no" laughed Blom, "This is too crazy"

Floorman Nick O'Hara than came over and informed Litvinov and the table with a friendly voice that they weren't allowed to discuss these kind of things when there were three players left in a hand.

Grospellier now wanted to grab his 1,600 back, but that wasn't allowed by the dealer of course. "Ok, I look. We friends if I look?" asked Litvinov to his neighbor. Grospellier laughed and said it was fine, "I was going to raise blind probably anyway when folded to me on the button."

Litvinov checked his cards, and mucked. Blom now took a look at his cards for the first time, and shoved all in for a little over 20,000. Grospellier checked his cards, and mucked.

You can say a lot about these High Rollers, but the play and banter is highly entertaining and the atmosphere nothing but relaxed.

Weird Spot

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Griffin Benger
Griffin Benger

Griffin Benger had mistakenly thought he was in the big blind and had put out 400. Three players had folded when they realised something had gone wrong and the floor was called to adjudicate.

The floor explained that because there had been “substantial action.” i.e three players folding, it would be ruled a call and the action would now be on Philipp Gruissem. Benger explained that he hadn’t even looked at his cards.

Being poker players they all had an opinion on the matter, but in the end the ruling stood and it was accepted. Benger’s chips would stay out there as a call.

Gruissem raised it to 1,200 from the button and Sam Trickett made the call in the small blind. Antoine Saout folded the big blind and now Benger looked at his cards.

Benger made it 4,500 to go. Gruissem folded and Trickett laughed “That’s such a weird spot. I don’t want to stack off.” He folded his {5-Spades}{5-Clubs} and Benger showed the table {8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. “I had to.” he explained.

Schemion Eliminated

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

Ole Schemion has just been eliminated from the tournament. We walked past him when he registered for another entry in the tournament. "I bluffed" he laughed, "I check-jammed the river" said Schemion while he walked back into the tournament room.

Angel Guillen told us some more details of the hand. Schemion opened under the gun and got three callers. On {6-}{6-}{2-} he bet 800 and one of his opponents made the call. Schemion fired another 1,350 on the {K-}-turn that brought a flush draw to the tabled. The {A-} on the river made Schemion check. His opponent fired 5,000, and Schemion pushed allin for a little over 20,000. The player made the call holding {J-}{6-} for trips, Schemion had {A-}{5-}-suited which wasn't good enough.

Though there hasn't been an official announcement yet, Ole Schemion is the European Poker Tour Season 10 Player of the Year. He has 1,173 points and an uncatchable lead over Thomas Muehloecker (872) and Alex Bilokur (823).

Kings Into the Muck

Nível 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Artem Litvinov (photo from the Main Event)
Artem Litvinov (photo from the Main Event)

Artem Litvninov is seated in seat one and just opened for 800. The dealer thought he wanted to fold though and mucked his cards. Max Silver had already invested in the pot but Litvinov had no cards anymore. Litvinov retrieved what he believed were his two cards from the muck, and the brush got called over.

The brush ruled that Litvinov's hand was dead, and that he was allowed to grab back 500 from his 800 raise. "I have two kings!" shouted Litvinov with an angry voice. "I go allin, no problem for me!" he continued angrily while he pushed his entire stack forward. It wouldn't go like that, he lost the 300 which would have been a limp, and that was it. "I have two kings and I lose 300!" he muttered to anybody who wanted to hear it.

Litvinov is still doing well with about 80,000 in chips.

Negreanu Escapes

Nível 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu opened for 675 from the cutoff and got one caller, Max Altergott on the button.

They saw a flop of {5-Clubs}{9-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. Negreanu checked and said. “Go ahead and bet. Eleven hundred.”

Altergott bet 900 which Negreanu called. The turn {8-Spades} saw another check from Negreanu and a bigger bet, 2,900 from Altergott. Negreanu quickly folded and Altergott slammed his cards on the table in mild frustration indicating he really wanted to see a call.

An Orbit With Blom

Nível 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

We watched Viktor Blom play an orbit of his table to get a glimpse of his early level strategy.

Hand #1 From the cutoff Blom opened for 600 and the 2x raise won the blinds and antes.

Hand #2 Blom open folded from the hijack

Hand #3 Artrem Litvanonv opened and Blom folded.

Hand #4 A Fold from Blom from early position.

Hand #5 Ariel Celestino opened for 750 and Litvanov in the small blind and Blom in the big blind call. They saw a flop of {5-Spades}{10-Hearts}{q-Hearts}. It was checked to Celestino who bet 1,200. Litvanov check-raised him to 2,775 and Blom and Celestino both folded.

Hand #6 Blom folds his small blind to another open of 750 from Celestino.

Hand #7 Again Celestino opened for 750 and another fold on the button for Blom.

Despite his crazy, even reckless reputation Blom has developed his tournament strategy over the years and while he has confessed to finding these game less stimulating that multi-tabling the nose bleeds he has shown the disciple and patience to make a few recent deep runs.

Celestino though looks determined to get full value per hands played for his buy in.
