Gruissem Leads Record-Breaking EPT Grand Final €100,000 SHR

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Philipp Gruissem

The 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final kicked off in Monaco on today with Day 1 action from the €100,000 Super High Roller. Last year this very tournament attracted 41 unique entries that accounted for nine reentries, and this year the field was even larger as 48 different players generated 11 reentries to bring the total field up to 59. That number could go up as registration remains open until the start of Day 2.

Speaking of the second day of play, 37 players survived the night after eight one-hour levels of play, including Philipp Gruissem, who emerged as the chip leader with 1,038,000. Others who bagged up big stacks include Ping San Chan (938,000), Daniel Negreanu (915,000), and Ole Schemion (847,000).

"It's been really, really rough for me. I had some trouble to focus, I really had to drink a lot of coffee (laughs) but it helped," Gruissem told PokerNews at the conclusion of play. "Mike [McDonald] put me in a really tough spot, but I got it right this time and I'm really happy. Looking forward to tomorrow."

The first elimination of the day happened in Level 3 (800/1,600/200) on a {6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop when Vladimir Troyanovskiy checked and Sam Trickett bet 8,200. Troyanovskiy check-raised to 21,000 and Trickett made the call to see the {8-Diamonds} on the turn. The Russian bet 27,000, Trickett again made the call, and the river was the {4-Hearts}. Troyanovskiy checked, and Trickett thought for a moment before moving all in. snap-called and tabled a flush with the {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}, which bested Trickett's {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

Upon seeing his opponent's cards, Trickett, slightly cross with himself, said, "That's what I thought you had. Then I went all in." Trickett exited the tournament floor and was not seen again on Day 1.

A little while later, Negreanu late registered the tournament, and in his very first hand, he eliminated fellow Team Pro Vanessa Selbst. Negreanu had made a straight on the river of an {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} board with {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and Selbst ended up shoving with the {A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. Selbst opted to reenter shortly thereafter.

Others who busted and reentered the event included Justin Bonomo, Chun Lei Zhou, Lo Shing Fung, Tobias Reinkemeier, Igor Kurganov, Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Ivey, Max Altergott and Daniel Colman. Colman reentered twice and is the only player to have €300,000 invested in the tournament.

Meanwhile, a slew of players busted and opted not to reenter. In addition to Trickett, Steve O'Dwyer, Jonathan Duhamel, Elton Tsang, Mike Watson, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Senh Ung, Martin Finger, Dario Sammartino, and Patrik Antonius all fell and did not return. Of course all of them can fire another bullet before the start of Day 2, which some are expected to do.

As for Gruissem, he got a good deal of his chips in an interesting hand that took place in Level 5 (1,200/2,400/300). The PokerNews Live Reporting Team picked up the action on the river of a {J-Spades}{A-Spades}{9-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{10-Spades} board, when “Philbort” bet 55,000 against Chun Lei Zhou, the latter having previously called bets on the flop and turn.

Zhou had been thinking for a minute before he moved all in for about 240,000 and Gruissem called instantly. Zhou looked sheepish as he turned over {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} having tried to double-float the German. It wouldn't have mattered what he had though, Gruissem tabled {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} for a Royal Flush.

"Yeah, I made a Royal Flush pretty early on and I got somebody to bluff me," Gruissem told PokerNews. "Well, that didn't work as you can imagine. Finally a Royal Flush got paid."

Day 2 action will get underway at Noon local time on Friday, and the plan will be to play down to the final table of eight. The final numbers and official payouts should become available shortly after the start of play, and of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will bring you them, as well as all the action, from the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller.

Until then, check out Jennifer Robles interview with the one and only Phil Ivey:

Isaac Haxton will be playing the cash game.

There’s an enormous €500/€1,000 cash game about to start here in Monaco at the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final. Dubbed the ‘One Million Euro Cash Game’, the high stakes game is going to have some amazing players and incredible pots. This is real money, people. Read the article to find out about players and details.

Oh, and don't expect the €100K SHR chip leader to play. He told PokerNews he's a little too tired for that.

"I know there will be cash games going on, but I'm tired," said Philbort. "I'm going to rest for tomorrow as it's a very important day. I'm gonna join the cash games the next days for sure."

Antonius vs. Negreanu: Only One Will Survive

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Patrik Antonius
Patrik Antonius

A big pot just took place between two of the world's most popular players in Daniel Negreanu and Patrik Antonius. It was a hand that would see one of them fall.

It began when the Team PokerStars Pro opened with a raise from middle position and the Finn called from the button. The blinds folded, the flop came down {8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, and Negreanu continued for 15,000. Antonius called, the dealer burned and turned the {8-Clubs}, and Negreanu bet again, this time 27,000.

Antonius decided to push back with a raise to 105,000, and Negreanu made the call. "Kid Poker" then checked the {6-Hearts} river and Antonius moved all in for his last 191,000. Negreanu, who was getting a massage, shifted in his chair and began putting together some chips.

Eventually he shrugged and said, "I guess I'll call." Antonius rapped the table and Negreanu then tabled his {8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for trips. "I'm really only beating a bluff," Negreanu added. Whether Antonius was bluffing or not remains a mystery as he mucked his hand. The only sure thing was that Negreanu had him beat and scored the knock out.

About a minute after Antonius busted, Australian Jeff Rossiter entered the field and took his seat at the table.

Alter-Gott by Selbst

The board was reading {3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{A-Spades}{2-Spades}{A-Clubs} and Max Altergott, winner of this event last year, was thinking. Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst had set him all in on the river and the German was debating whether or not to call off his last 100,000 or so. Finally he did so with {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} but Selbst turned over {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for a full house to boost her own stack to over the 500,000 mark.

O'Dwyer Hits the Tank Before Calling It Off

Nível 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Steve O'Dwyer

After Ole Schemion limped from the small blind and then called a raise from Steve O'Dwyer in the big, the flop came down {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Schemion led out for 25,000. O'Dwyer made the call and it was off to the {4-Spades} turn.

Schemion kept the pressure on with another bet, this time 48,000, and the {4-Clubs} completed the board on the river. Schemion reached for his stack of pink T25,000 chips and slowly slid them forward.

O'Dwyer, who had 134,000 remaining, was put to the test and he hit the tank to contemplate the decision. To call would cost him all his chips, and possibly another €100,000 if he decided to reenter. More than three minutes ticked by before he dropped in a call, and he was left shaking his head when Schemion rolled over the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for a full house. O'Dwyer, who made the call with the {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} for two pair with an ace kicker, collected his things and exited the feature table area.

Paul Phua opened to 6,500 preflop from UTG, Patrik Antonius made it 24,000 from UTG+1, action was passed around to Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel who moved all in for about 80,000. Phua folded but Antonius called instantly.

Duhamel: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Antonius: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

The board came {6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} missing both players and the Finn was shipped the pot.

Bonomo Squeezes Himself Out of the Tournament

Nível 6 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

Patrik Antonius opened under the gun for 6,000, and Dario Sammartino (cutoff) and Daniel Negreanu (button) made the call. In the big blind it was Justin Bonomo who shoved allin for his remaining 65,800. Antonius quickly folded, and so did Sammartino.

Negreanu wasn't so quick to release his hand though. He asked the dealer to pull in the 6,000, and saw he needed to add 59,800 to make the call. After some more pondering he called.

Daniel Negreanu: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Justin Bonomo: {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Bonomo would make a pair, but it wouldn't be the right one: {5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. Justin Bonomo left the tournament area, we're unsure if he's intending to re-enter.

"I was joking," replied Ivey.

"Well, I guess that hand will get reported..." said Mike McDonald.

Yes sir, it will indeed.

Flush Over Flush Sends Tsang Out the Door

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Elton Tsang
Elton Tsang

Fabian Quoss tends to do well in high roller events, which was evidenced by his win in the $100,000 Super High Roller at the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. If the German has his way, he'll be adding another Super High Roller title to his résumé.

In a recent hand, there was a board reading {3-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} when Quoss bet 37,000 only to have Elton Tsang raise to 100,050. Quoss thought for a few moments before moving all in, and Tsang, who hand the short stack, called off for right around 200,000.

Quoss: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Tsang: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Both players had turned a flush, but of course the ace-high one of Quoss was best. Tsang, who was drawing dead, watched as the {4-Spades} was put out on the river and then took his leave from the tournament at the tail end of Level 4.

Another One Bites The Dust

Nível 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Isaac Haxton opened for 6,000 under the gun. Ole Schemion in the hijack made the call, before Antonio Esfandiai squeezed to 22,000 from the button.

Both blinds folded, but Haxton seemed interested. He glared at Esfandiari's stack, and than four-bet to 52,000. Schemion quickly folded and action was on Esfandiari. Esfandiari, who had 122,200 to start the hand, shoved allin. Haxton called.

Antonio Esfandiari: {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
Isaac Haxton: {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

The flop hit Esfandiari and he was on the verge of doubling up: {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. The {4-Clubs} on the turn wasn't of any threat, but the {5-Clubs} on the river was. Esfandiari's top pair wasn't worth anything anymore, Haxton grabbed all the chips in the pot.
