Day 1 Wraps Up with 49 Players, Addamo Pacing a Stacked Field

Nível 14 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Michael Addamo Leads After Day 1
Michael Addamo Leads After Day 1

The first high-roller event of the 2018 World Series of Poker Europe got underway today with Event #8: €25,500 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller. With it, brought some of the game's greatest players into King's Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic. They filled the upper level of the casino and the action was fast and furious throughout the day.

After 14 levels of play, Michael Addamo emerged as the chipleader with 8,120,000 chips, leading the remaining 49 player field. Addamo has accumulated over $2.1 million in career tournament earnings with his largest cash coming this summer in Las Vegas where he scored over $650,000 and his first WSOP bracelet with a win in The Marathon event. Addamo also has two other WSOP final table appearances and if he keeps up this pace, he is well on his way to another one.

Addamo continued to find himself on the right side of all the big pots he got involved in, including a massive pot with Andrej Desset to get things started. Addamo three-bet preflop and continued on the flop and turn before finally making top pair on the river and claiming the rest of Desset's chips. After being moved to a different table, the Australian clashed with James Chen in a chip-leading pot that saw Addamo turn two pair against Chen's top pair. All of the chips got in the middle and Addamo held on to claim another victim and continue his heater.

The day began somewhat slowly and the tournament was even delayed by 30 minutes as the tournament staff awaited more entries. They decided to get the action underway with just seven players split up on two different tables. One of the first entries, Timothy Adams, began to build a stack early on and that momentum carried him throughout the day as he finished with 4,775,000 chips.

Players started to roll in through the opening levels and there was already over 40 entries by the time the first break arrived. The field was stacked with familiar faces on every table but that was to be expected. With an unlimited number of entries possible, there was no shortage of all-ins, which also meant there was no shortage of re-buys. Michael Soyza and Martin Kabrhel each had three entries to their name but Kabrhel was the only one to find a bag with 2,650,000 chips.

Kristen Bicknell also had an up and down day but managed to get away with firing only one bullet. Bicknell built her stack up to over 2,000,000 early on with a triple up through Manig Loeser and Jack Salter, but then saw her chips slowly dwindle away. After the last break of the night, Bicknell woke up with pocket kings in a dream spot to eliminate Salter and double up through Sergio Aido, bringing her stack to over 4,000,000 this time. By the time the bags were handed out, Bicknell was left with 3,890,000 chips.

The only other lady to put up the €25,500 and sit amongst the "big boys" was Liv Boeree who wound up bagging 585,000 chips. Some other notables to keep an eye on heading to Day 2 include Jean-Noel Thorel (5,910,000), Ivan Leow (5,050,000), Winfred Yu (4,645,000), Dominik Nitsche (3,020,000), Ryan Riess (2,460,000), Adrian Mateos (2,275,000), and defending champion Niall Farrell (1,575,000).

It wasn't a profitable day for everyone though as many players were put through the ringer with such a tough field to battle against. Some players to fall short by the end of the day were Anthony Zinno, Gal Yifrach, Benjamin Pollak, Chris Ferguson, Bertrand Grospellier, John Cynn, Thomas Muehloecker, and Jack Salter. By the end of the day, there were a total of 124 entries with 80 unique players and 44 re-entries.

With late registration still open until the start of Day 2, everyone still has the opportunity to try their luck one more time. The action will continue at 3:00 PM on Thursday with the blinds resuming on level 15 at 30,000/60,000 and a 60,000 big blind ante. The schedule is to play down to a winner and crown another WSOPE gold bracelet winner. The live stream will also continue tomorrow on Twitch with hole cards being shown for the final eight players.

Stay tuned to PokerNews as the live reporting team will be on the tournament floor to bring you all of the action throughout the day.

Kristen Bicknell raised to 115,000 from the under-the-gun position and Sergio Aido called from the button. Big blind Jack Salter moved all in for 420,000 and Bicknell decided to flat. Aido moved all in himself as well, covering Bicknell. Bicknell called for her entire stack which was 1,875,000.

Kristen Bicknell: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Sergio Aido: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Jack Salter: {A-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

The board ran out {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and Bicknell came out on top with her pocket kings. Salter was eliminated in the last level of the day, but the reentry period is still open.

Nível 13 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Michael Addamo
Michael Addamo

The board read {9-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{5-Hearts} with around 300,000 in the middle.

Michael Addamo was sitting in the big blind, he had a stack of 100,000-value chips in front of him with the all-in button next to it. James Chen had a bet of 365,000 in front of him from the cutoff and was sitting in the tank. After a while, Chen sighed and made the call for the 1,200,000 he had behind.

James Chen: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Michael Addamo: {J-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}

Chen held top pair but Addamo had turned two pair. Chen needed another ace to double up but the {4-Hearts} on the river wasn't that as he was eliminated for now.

Tariq and Bicknell Play a Big Pot

Nível 11 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

On a flop of {7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, Kristen Bicknell and Ali Tariq each put 250,000 into the pot that already had over 200,000 in it. The {k-Clubs} landed on the turn and Bicknell checked from middle position. Tariq fired out a bet of 350,000 in the cutoff and Bicknell called.

The river brought the {a-Spades} and Bicknell checked again. Tariq slid in a bet of 635,000, nearly his whole stack. Bicknell cringed her face a bit and gave it some thought but decided to lay her hand down.

Just a couple of hands later, Bicknell got all of her 700,000 chips in the middle with {a-}{k-} against Manig Loeser with {q-}{q-} and Jack Salter with {a-}{10-}. Bicknell spiked a king on the flop and held on for a triple up.

Nível 11 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Sergio Aido
Sergio Aido

Krasimir Yankov raised to 50,000 in the cutoff and Sergio Aido shoved all in for his last 237,000 on the button. Steffen Sontheimer was in the big blind and just flat-called. Yankov gave it some brief thought but elected to fold.

Steffen Sontheimer: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}
Sergio Aido: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

The flop came {k-Spades}{j-Spades}{6-Spades} and Sontheimer flopped a set of sixes against Aido's straight draw. The turn was the {8-Clubs} and the river brought the {4-Spades}. Neither player held a spade in their hand and Sontheimer took down the pot.

Farrell Takes Big Pot From Hsiang

Nível 10 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Niall Farrell
Niall Farrell

Niall Farrell opened the action with a raise to 45,000 from the cutoff. Small blind Yue Wei Hsiang had different ideas and three-bet to 95,000. The player in the big blind folded and Farrell called the bet.

The flop came down {8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and Hsiang put in a continuation bet of 80,000. Farrell called again and the turn was the {5-Clubs}. Hsiang fired another bet and he put in 225,000. Farrell called another time and the {10-Spades} completed the board.

Hsiang checked this time and Farrell was the one to bet as he put in a stack worth about 1,100,000, which was enough to put Hsiang all in. Hsiang took his time but decided to fold after several minutes.

Martin Kabrhel and Stefan Schillhabel have both reentered the tournament and have taken their seats again with a stack of 1,000,000.

Chen Doubles Through Schillhabel

Nível 10 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
James Chen
James Chen

James Chen raised to 45,000 from the cutoff and Stefan Schillhabel shoved with the slightly bigger stack from the small blind. Jean-Noel Thorel quickly folded his big blind and Chen called after considering it for a while for the 657,000 he had behind.

James Chen: {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
Stefan Schillhabel: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

The flop came {q-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} to give Chen two pair immediately.

The turn was the {q-Hearts} to give Chen a full house and Schillhabel was drawing dead.

The {j-Diamonds} on the river was just a formality to complete the board and after paying Chen his double-up, Schillhabel was left with a mere 49,000.

Addamo Sends Desset to the Rail

Nível 9 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Michael Addamo
Michael Addamo

Andrej Desset opened from early position and Michael Addamo re-raised to 105,000 on his direct left. The action folded back to Desset who just called to see a flop of {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}. Desset check-called a bet of 125,000 from Addamo and the {3-Diamonds} landed on the turn.

Desset checked again and Addamo fired another bullet of 250,000. Desset still stuck around to see the {k-Diamonds} on the river and checked one more time. Addamo slid in a bet of 1,000,000 which was more than enough to cover Desset's remaining stack of 412,000.

Desset went into the tank for over three minutes before the clock was finally called. That sped up the process as Desset stuck in some chips to call. Addamo tabled {k-Spades}{q-Clubs} while Desset turned over {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} as he walked away from the table.

Bicknell Calls Becker's Bluff

Nível 5 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Johannes Becker
Johannes Becker

Jun Wah Yap raised it up from the hijack and Kristen Bicknell three-bet from the small blind. Both Johannes Becker in the big blind and Yap called to see a flop of {10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. Bicknell led out for 70,000 and only Becker called.

The turn brought the {2-Clubs} and Bicknell checked this time. Becker seized the opportunity to bet 125,000 but Bicknell still called. The river was the {3-Diamonds} and Bicknell checked one more time. Becker reached back for a bet of 465,000 and Bicknell went into the tank. After a couple of minutes, Bicknell eventually made the call and Becker showed jack-high. Bicknell turned over {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and was awarded the pot.

"If it was me, I would have tanked for six or seven more minutes," Martin Kabrhel piped up. "But I put him on a full house. Well played Johannes."

Thorel Earns an Early Double with Aces

Nível 4 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

Picking up the action on the flop with Jean-Noel Thorel and Matthias Eibinger heads-up in a pot, the flop read {8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} with over 100,000 in the middle already. After a series of raises, the two players got all of the chips in the middle with Thorel being the player at risk for 925,000.

Jean-Noel Thorel: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Matthias Eibinger: {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

Thorel was in the lead with a pair of aces but Eibinger had outs with a pair and straight draw. The turn was the {2-Diamonds} which changed nothing and the {a-Hearts} on the river only improved Thorel to a set of aces.
