Lakhov Pushing for Lead, Riess Eliminated Late on Day 2 of WSOPE Main Event

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Alexander Lakhov
Alexander Lakhov

Alexander Lakhov nearly nabbed a bracelet, the last domestic one of the year, when he got second in this year's World Series of Poker Global Casino Championship. Unfortunately for the accomplished Russian, he fell heads-up to Sean Yu and had to settle for a payout of $183,527. Despite more than $3.2 million in cashes, Lakhov has yet to claim his first piece of WSOP gold.

It seems he's flown back across the pond hungrier than ever to finish what he came so close to accomplishing. At the close of Day 2 of the 2017 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, Lakhov bagged 424,000, putting him squarely in the top five.

Despite his hefty count though, Lakhov still trails overall chipleader Vishal Maini. The British player finished with a monstrous 651,500 at the close of the six levels of Day 2 play. He's got a few cashes totalling a little over $73,000, so the first-place prize of €1,115,207 here would represent quite the windfall for him.

With the close of registration at the start of play — and the customary last-minute entries of numerous high rollers, from the likes of Phil Hellmuth to a gaggle of German crushers — the prize pool was finalized early in the day. The aforementioned payout is of greatest interest of course, but it's also notable that the tournament did manage to inch past the €5 million guarantee with 529 entries, creating a total prize pool of €5,025,500.

Some of the players still in contention for the €1.1 million include bracelet winners Mike Leah, Kristen Bicknell, David Peters, Niall Farrell and Anthony Zinno, as well as defending champ Kevin MacPhee. Team 888poker is also well-represented with Vivian Saliba, Natalie Hof, Parker Talbot and High Roller for One Drop winner Dominik Nitsche making it through.

Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess got eliminated late on Day 2

Former Main Event champ Ryan Riess, tabbed as a player to watch coming as he closes out a smoking-hot 2017, fell near the end of play. He lost most of his stack in a huge flip with jacks against the ace-king of Julian Stuer about an hour before players bagged up.

Others going bust included the aforementioned Hellmuth, as well as Adrian Mateos, Chris Moorman, Nick Petrangelo and John Racener. The elimination of the latter meant Chris Ferguson became the WSOP Player of the Year.

Day 3 play kicks off at noon on Tuesday with blinds at 1,500/3,000 and a running ante of 500, so come back to PokerNews as the tournament marches toward the money bubble.

Ryan Riess

Ryan Riess raised to 12,000 from the under-the-gun position with {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. Julian Stuer called with {k-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} from mid-position. Mikhail Surin found {a-Clubs}{J-Spades} in the small blind and called.

The flop came {3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}, Surin checked, Riess shoved for 1,700, Stuer called and Surin called too.

The turn brought them the {3-Hearts}, both Surin and Stuer checked.

The river completed the board with the {8-Hearts}, Surin checked and so did Stuer. Surin won with a pair of threes and eliminated Riess from the main event.

Luca Doubles Through Madaras

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Ivan Luca
Ivan Luca

Norbert Madaras raised to 4,000 from the cutoff and both Ivan Luca and Bernd Gleissner in the blinds called.

The flop came {K-Spades}{5-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, both Luca and Gleissner checked, Madaras bet 4,000. Luca called, Gleissner folded.

The turn brought them the {4-Clubs}, now Luca bet 4,000 but Madaras raised to 20,000. Luca looked at his cards and called.

The river completed the board with the {7-Diamonds}, Luca checked, Madaras shoved with a bigger stack than Luca. Luca went into the tank. After about two to three minutes the player in the hijack called the clock on Luca. The floor came over and gave Luca 30 seconds to make a decision. Luca got up from his chair and then grabbed a stack of chips to make the call and put them over the betting line.

Madaras tried to muck his cards but the table told him he needed to show them. He didn't agree with that but then the rule that when there is an all-in and a call, that the cards need to be shown. He then flipped them over and showed he had {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. Luca had him beat with {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for a pair of kings. The dealer counted out Luca's stack which was worth 69,200 and Madaras paid for the double up.

Ramin Hajiyev, in an earlier event.

We found Ramin Hajiyev on the button facing a decision for his stack on a board of {5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts}{a-Spades}{8-Clubs}. The player in the cutoff had set him in for 38,200, about the size of the pot. Hajiyev decided to call it off and his opponent smiled and showed {8-}{7-}. Hajiyev had him outkicked with {9-Spades}{8-Spades} after missing a flush draw and he took the pot.

Several players at the table congratulated him on the big call.

"Thank you, thank you," Hajiyev said. "I went with my guts."

Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

Ryan Riess raised to 2,800 from the button to be re-raised by the player in the small blind to 10,500. The big blind quickly got out of the way. Riess looked at his opponent and called.

The flop came {3-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}, the small blind bet 7,000 and Riess called.

The turn brought them the {5-Diamonds}, now the player in the small blind took some time to think and then decided to bet 20,000. Riess stared at his opponent, looked at his cards, counted out his yellow chips worth 5,000 each and then decided to shove. His opponent was now up for a decision. He now looked at his own cards, looked at Riess, counted his own chips out and saw that Riess had him covered. In the end, he decided to fold.

John Racener

John Racener tweeted that he figured he needed a top-three run in this tournament to take down Player of the Year honors, and those hopes were just on the brink. He shoved under the gun for 26,000 and was called by the next player before a player two seats over put in a reraise all in. That chased away everyone else, including the caller.

Racener: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{9-Spades}, keeping the tens best and giving Racener a triple up.

Peters Collects Another Stack, Continuing Strong First Level

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
David Peters
David Peters

David Peters came into the day with 94,200, and while he likely hoped for a good start on Day 2, he probably didn't imagine Level 7 would go this well for him.

A little after busting a player who wouldn't fold two jacks against his set, we found Peters in another huge pot. He had bet 23,000 out of the small blind and a player in Seat 8 who replaced the last player Peters busted shoved all in for about 86,000. The board read {4-Spades}{6-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and Peters needed a few minutes to think this one over. Finally, he flicked in a chip to call.

Peters' opponent turned over {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and headed for the exit when Peters showed {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}.
