Welcome to Event #48: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Championship

2016 Champion George Danzer
2016 Champion George Danzer

Today marks the start of what is expected to be one of the most star-studded fields at this year's World Series of Poker, the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Championship.

That is if last year's final table is to go by! In 2016, George Danzer took down the title and $338,646 in prize money to achieve his fourth WSOP gold bracelet.

Such was the level of skill within the field, that eight of the final 10 players held prior WSOP titles. Danzer saw off the likes of David Benyamine, Justin Bonomo, David Grey, Eli Elezra, Scott Clements, Randy Ohel, and Todd Brunson to secure his fourth title.

"It was the craziest final table I’ve been to, that’s for sure,” Danzer said at the time.

Today, players will start with 50,000 in chips and will play 10 levels. Late registration will be open for eight levels (about 12 a.m.) with 15-minute breaks every two levels.

Don't Poke The Bear

Nível 1 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Brandon Shack-Harris
Brandon Shack-Harris

Brandon Shack-Harris has shown up today with a hoodie that is styled to look like a real bear, but this is not something that's new for him. Last year, when Shack-Harris made the final table of Event #60: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better, he wore a similar-looking outfit. Last year, though, he wore a polar bear, and the same costume has made appearances earlier in this series. Today, he's gone for a black bear.

It seems like it might be something that's lucky for him, though, as he just took a pot off Marcel Luske.

Shack-Harris: {x-}{x-} / {3-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{9-Clubs} / {x-}
Luske: {x-}{x-} / {9-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} / {x-}

Shack-Harris was the bring-in and Luske just called. On fourth, Shack-Harris checked to Luske. Luske bet and Shack-Harris raised. Luske called. Luske called another bet on fifth street, then both players checked down sixth and seventh.

"Two pair," Luske said.

Shack-Harris turned up his down cards of {A-}{3-}{5-} for a better two pairs, and that was good for him to take down the early pot.

Mike Sexton Runs Into Esther Taylor's Quads

Taylor: {x-}{x-} / {4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts} / {x-}
Sexton: {x-}{x-} / {K-Hearts}{A-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Spades} / {x-}
Painter: {x-}{x-} / {3-Spades}{9-Spades}{K-Spades}{3-Diamonds} — Folded

On fourth street, Esther Taylor bet, and Jameson Painter called, as did Mike Sexton. When checked to on fifth, Taylor bet again and was called again by both players.

On sixth, Taylor bet again with the betting lead, and this time, Painter folded, but Sexton called. Sexton called one more bet from Taylor on seventh.

"Quads," Taylor said, showing {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}{7-Clubs}.

Sexton shook his head in frustration and flashed {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} for three of a kind.

Grapenthien Nearly Doubles With Quads

Grapenthien: {x-}{x-} / {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} / {x-}
Fal: {x-}{x-} / {4-Clubs}{J-Spades}{6-Spades}{9-Clubs} / {x-}
Ahmed: {x-}{x-} / {3-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} — Folded

With a short stack, Matt Grapenthien completed, then called a raise by Nikolay Fal. Owais Ahmed called, as did Grapenthien.

On fourth street, Ahmed checked to Grapenthien, who bet, and both players called. On fifth, Grapenthien took the betting lead, and he bet. Only Fal called. Fal called another bet on sixth street.

Grapenthien bet once more on seventh street, putting him all in. Fal picked his cards up, looked at them a bit, turned up the {2-Spades}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}, then folded. Grapenthien showed the {8-Clubs} for quads.

"Not a bad hand to be all in with," he said.

Benyamine: {x-}{x-} / {8-Hearts}{5-Spades}{J-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} / {x-}

On seventh street, Brandon Shack-Harris was in the tank, and he was thinking about calling a bet that Benyamine had put out. There was already roughly 12,000 in the middle of the table, as well as over 6,000 worth of bets between Benyamine and Shack-Harris.

Shack-Harris thought pretty intently about the decision, then finally he decided to call.

Benyamine turned up {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{3-Spades} for a wheel.

"Nice hand," Shack-Harris said very quietly. He tapped the table, and the chips were sent Benyamine's way.

Friedman: {x-}{x-} / {a-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} / {x-}
Mercier: {x-}{x-} / {9-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} / {x-}

"The kitchen table just keeps on getting bigger," remarked Frank Kassela as Jason Mercier joined the table.

Adam Friedman completed, and Mercier, on his very first hand, raised. Friedman called. Friedman bet fourth street, and Mercier called. Mercier bet fifth street, and Friedman called. Both players checked sixth street, and Mercier check-called seventh street.

"Full house," announced Friedman, turning over {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades} to take down the pot.

Perry Friedman had raised on fourth street and gotten three callers. On fifth street, James Obst bet, Dzmitry Urbanovich folded, and Perry Friedman and Steve Jelinek called.

Obst bet on sixth street, again getting two callers. Obst bet again on seventh street. Friedman called quickly, and Jelinek folded.

Obst showed {6-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for a straight and an eight-seven low, and that was good enough to scoop.

Deuce to Seven Stories With Harman and Lisandro

Nível 5 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Jeff Lisandro
Jeff Lisandro

At Table 721 in the Brasilia Room, there are several multiple bracelet winners sharing a table, with over 16 bracelets on the table between the players with some big mixed-game titles between Jenifer Harman, Jason Mercier, Jeff Lisandro, and Frank Kassela.

"There's at least three no-limit deuce bracelets here," Mercier said. "Jeff, don't you have one, too?"

"No," Lisandro said. "I lost heads-up to Matusow. I should've won that one."

"Jen, what's your second bracelet in?" Mercier asked. "I know one is limit hold'em."

"It's in no-limit deuce," Harman said. "I almost lost, too. Lyle (Berman) pitched in one of the wrong cards, and I let him take it back."

"Wait, what?" Mercier asked.

"Yeah, he threw in the wrong card," Harman said. "The floor came over and didn't know what to do, so he said, 'Well, whatever Jennifer thinks.'"

Everyone at the table had a laugh. "I let him take it back," Harman said.

"Something like that happened to me," Lisandro said. "I had Matusow down to one bet and he caught me bluffing. Then there was a point where I knew he was bluffing, and I called him with a pair of nines after he stood pat. He got so steamed up he just walked off, and the tournament director called a break."

Everyone at the table was shocked.

"Yeah, then he came back and won the next five hands and beat me," Lisandro continued. Everyone laughed and continued telling stories about their bracelet wins and cash game fiascos.

Kelly: {x-}{x-} / {8-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} / {x-}

There was a huge pot brewing between Chris Vitch, Matthew Kelly, and the recently joined Scott Bohlman. There was close to 80,000 already in the middle of the table, and action was on seventh street. After a bet, it looked like Kelly raised. Bohlman called, and Vitch was in the tank. He eventually decided to call, and the hands were turned up.

Kelly showed {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for a full house. Bohlman showed {4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for a sixty-four low. Vitch turned his hand face-down and sent it over to the dealer as the other two split up his chips.

On sixth street, Jan Suchanek had the betting lead, and he lead out. Alex Luneau called. Action repeated itself on seventh.

"I think I got you scooped," Suchanek said, showing {A-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades} for trips and a low. He was right, and Luneau mucked.

Despite losing that pot, Luneau has still managed to build a massive stack today, amassing over 150,000 already.
