John Hulett and Deepinder Singh Lead After Day 1 of the Event #10: $1,000 Tag Team No-Limit Hold'em

Event #10: $1,000 Tag Team No-Limit Hold'em drew 843 runners and 94 teams will return Tuesday at noon to continue their battle. All remaining teams are in the money as the top 127 teams will get paid, sharing pieces of the $758,700 prize pool. John Hulett captains the leading team that will start Day 2 with the biggest stack in the tournament room. Hulett, accompanied by Deepinder Singh bagged up 146,000 today.

Singh was the key player of this team. He had a tough table draw, with former November Niner Jesse Sylvia to his left. But he dealt with it the best possible way, seizing most of Sylvia's chips in one of the biggest pots we saw today. Four-ways to a queen-high flop with two spades, Singh bet out and Sylvia was his only caller. Singh then barreled on the entertaining turn card - a king of diamonds that brought a second flush draw on the board. Sylvia tank-called and the river bricked. Singh pulled the trigger and moved all-in. Sylvia couldn't find a way out of this hand as he had flopped a top pair along with a flush draw and improved to top two pair on the turn. But it wasn't enough for him as Singh showed a set of queens to scoop the giant pot and vault over 100,000 in chips.

There were other contenders for the overnight chip lead. During the last level, it looked to be Brian Yoon pacing the field. He knocked out Russell Thomas, who played in a team with his wife Kitty Kuo and Saya Ono, who was paired with Ryan McNeel. Yoon eventually sealed 130,400 in his bag, putting himself and his teammate Michael Gagliano in good shape for Day 2. The top five also includes Team Hughes, led by Ryan Hughes (125,400), Kiryl Radzivonau - Mikhail Semin (116,000) and Ben Yu - Jacob Wilson (115,600). Team Shulman, captained by two-time bracelet winner Barry Shulman, also reported a six-figure chip count (109,000).

Among notable teams coming back for Day 2 are lineups such as Charalampos Lappas - Georgios Zisimopoulos (71,600), son and dad Brian Pinkus - Michael Pinkus (71,600), Maria Ho - Fedor Holz - Rainer Kempe - Philipp Zukernik (42,100), Andy Bloch - Howard Lederer - Chris Ferguson (23,000), Nick Yunis - Nacho Barbero (19,900) and Thomas Miller - Matthew Wakeman (18,900).

Unfortunately, we won't see some of the unique poker combos anymore as many star-studded teams failed to make it through. Those include Matt Glantz - Michael Mizrachi - Robert Mizrachi - Todd Brunson, a dream team that lost its hopes at the end of the day, with Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi at helm. Jason Wheeler - Tim Reilly - Nicholas Palma are also out and so are Ari Engel - Nachman Berlin, Thomas Muehloecker - Ana Marquez, Steven van Zadelhoff - Kenny Hallaert - Kristen Bicknell - Benny Glaser, and Jason Mercier - Natasha Mercier - Felipe Ramos.

This tournament will also crown a new champion as Doug Polk and Ryan Fee busted in 127th place, right after the bubble burst. Polk and Fee were teamed with Blair Miller and Steven Peller this time.

The 94 remaining teams are guaranteed to earn at least $1,562. Play will resume at 12 p.m. and PokerNews will be once again on the ground to provide live reporting from your couch.

Jesse Sylvia Loses Huge Chunk to Deepinder Singh in Massive Cooler

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jesse Sylvia
Jesse Sylvia

Jesse Sylvia was sitting on a very promising stack until a few moments ago when the following hand occurred.

There were four players in the pot for 2,000 apiece, with Jesse Sylvia in the latest position. The flop came {Q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Spades}, and the first two players checked. Deepinder Singh, directly to Sylvia's right, bet 6,200. Sylvia was the only player to call.

Then, the {K-Diamonds} appeared on the turn, and the action continued. Singh cut out a bet of 12,000 and slid it forward. Sylvia asked his opponent to lift his left arm up so that he could see how much he had left behind. It was around 30,000. Sylvia took nearly three minutes to determine a plan.

The dealer considered it was time to call the floor person, and the new clock-calling rule was applied. Sylvia received 30 seconds and would have an additional 10-second vocal countdown should he need it. He called before reaching that point.

The river was a meaningless {3-Hearts} at first sight. Now it was Singh who didn't hurry. However, he announced an all in after about 90 seconds or so. This prompted a usual request from Sylvia: "Can I get the count?" It was 30,200 to call. Sylvia had more than that, but it was certainly a tough decision for the former November Niner. However, Sylvia moved a pile of his chips towards the middle, and Singh turned over {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} for a flopped set.

Sylvia showed {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} for top two and a missed flush draw. He's down to 7,100, while Singh's stack soared up to 115,000.

John Hulett, the captain of Singh's two-men team, must be happy about his sidekick's performance.

Luca Exits After Bluffing Off His Stack with Six-High

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Ivan Luca (as seen in a previous event)
Ivan Luca (as seen in a previous event)

What had started well for Maria Lampropulos and Ivan Luca has eventually become a short-lived tale. The pair lasted just under two levels in the tournament.

The hand started when Stephen Dees, one of the chip leaders, opened to 1,500 from the hijack. On the button, Ivan Luca responded with a three-bet, making it 3,500. John Green came along with a call in the big blind, and Dees accepted the invitation to the flop, too.

All three players checked when the {J-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} flop landed, and the action commenced on the {7-Spades} turn. Luca, who was last to act, saw his opponents check again. He took his chance to bite, placing in a 3,000 bet. He received two calls.

The {K-Hearts} completed the board. Green and Dees checked yet again, and Luca moved all-in for just over 8,000. Green didn't hesitate before calling, and Dees sighed. "Damn. Got it all, huh?" he said. He eventually layed his hand down.

Meanwhile, Luca already knew that nothing could change his fate. He showed a stone-cold bluff with {6-}{5-}, playing the board. Green's {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} was a comfortable winner.

Welcome to the World of Ari Engel

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Ari Engel (as seen in a previous event)
Ari Engel (as seen in a previous event)

A poker nomad of his own, Ari Engel has been crushing the live scene everywhere in the world. A lot of discussions across poker media arose before the 2017 World Series of Poker. Is it the time for the WSOP Circuit legend to finally take down a bracelet event? Well, he's doing fine in the Tag Team tournament, at least.

Something told us things might get tasty on his table, and the gut feeling proved to be right. Engel was in the small blind and the action was on him after a raise to 1,000 from the player in the hijack and a call from the player in the cutoff. Engel fell into deep thought and then squeezed for 3,700. The original raiser folded, but a call from the cutoff followed.

The flop brought the {Q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} and Engel continued for 2,300. His opponent acted quickly, putting in eight yellow chips worth a raise to 8,000. Engel looked at it but it didn't take him more than 30 seconds to announce he was all in. He knew he was in good shape when a request for a count followed, as he had only 6,800 more than the raise — a total of 14,800. The call button was pushed and cards were turned over. Engel showed {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} and was ahead against {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}.

Things got spicy when the {10-Diamonds} appeared on the turn, as Engel now needed to avoid any diamond card. But his two blockers were strong, and the brick in {3-Spades} sealed the huge double-up for the poker traveller.

Carrel Has Read Spot On

Nível 3 : 75/150, 25 ante
Charlie Carrel in the $111,000 One Drop
Charlie Carrel in the $111,000 One Drop

With the board showing {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Spades}{4-Clubs}, Thomas Franklin bet 1,600 and Charlie Carrel called before the {8-Hearts} river completed the board. Franklin bet 1,500 and Carrel started some table talk.

"I guess you have jack-ten, or king-jack," Carrel said, trying to get any information from his opponent.

"You will tell me," Carrel added and Franklin replied, "Do I have to tell now or later?"

Carrel added some more and Franklin joked back "I want $10 in cash," which Carrel indeed paid before mucking his cards.

Franklin flashed exactly that latter guess — {K-Spades}{J-Spades} — and raked in the pot, leaving Carrel short.

As confirmed by Dylan Linde and Aaron Hendrix, the all-star team of Andy Frankenberger - Phil Hellmuth - Brandon Cantu - Mike Matusow has been eliminated. Frankenberger was the one in action and got it in with pocket aces against an opponent that flopped a straight with eight-seven.

Neither Hellmuth, Cantu or Matusow even got to play as their team has been eliminated in Level 2 already.

Welcome to Day 1 of Event #10: $1,000 Tag Team No-Limit Hold'em

Doug Polk is the defending champion along with Ryan Fee
Doug Polk is the defending champion along with Ryan Fee

At 11 a.m. local time, Day 1 of the Event #10: $1,000 Tag Team No-Limit Hold'em kicks off, the second time a team tournament will be taking place during the 2017 World Series of Poker.

First introduced in 2016, the "tag team" format quickly picked up a lot of interest from players and ensured plenty of fun at the tables and on the rail. A $10,000 edition of the event this year has already crowned a champion, with the poker couple Liv Boeree and Igor Kurganov each claiming first gold bracelets just two days ago.

The defending champions in this event are Doug Polk and Ryan Fee who emerged victorious in a 863-entry strong field and took the lion's share of last year's $776,700 prize pool, splitting the first-place prize of $153,358 evenly. Whether or not Polk will defend his title remains unknown for now, as the American poker pro has reached the final table of Event #6: High Roller for One Drop - $111,111 No-Limit Hold'em that will play down to a winner today.

The team captain can buy in at the cage for $1,000. All members of the team DO NOT have to register at the same time, but it is certainly encouraged that they do so. Other team members can register separately, provided they provide the team captain's last name and last 4 digits of the team captain's Total Rewards card number.

Important things to know:

  • Each teammate must check in at his or her table prior to the end of registration period. Teammates must play at least one round of blinds at some point in tournament or the team will be disqualified.
  • Players may tag in a teammate anytime he/she is not in an active hand.
  • Payouts will be calculated based on the total number of teams and be distributed evenly among teammate(s).
  • Doors will open in the Amazon room at 9 a.m. today to register teams. Players must bring their team's copy of the receipts to be checked into the tournament.

The action will kick off two hours later at 11 a.m. with all participating teams receiving 5,000 in chips to start. A total of 10 levels of 60 minutes each are scheduled for Day 1, and the late registration remains open for six levels (until around 7:10 p.m.). There will be a 20-minute break every two levels and a 90-minute dinner break after the end of Level 6. As a result play will conclude at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time.
