Event #94: $5,000 8-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Starts at Noon Local Time

Michael Wang
Michael Wang

The 2023 World Series of Poker has begun to wind down, but there are still a few opportunities left for those looking at a last chance at glory. Only time will tell if last year’s champion and two-time bracelet winner, Michael Wang will be in attendance to defend his title. Wang managed to defeat 573 entrants over two days of play, despite a chaotic incident that marred Day 1 for the entire field, Wang somehow kept his wits about him on Day 2, defeating Farid Jattin in heads up play. Erik Seidel also made a close run at yet another bracelet for his collection, ultimately settling for the bronze.

Plenty of notables are sure to enter this particular field in Event #94: $5,000 8-Handed No-Limit Hold’em, as it’s one of the last two events on the docket. What fans should really be on the lookout for is some combination of Ian Matakis, Chris Brewer, Shaun Deeb, Josh Arieh, and Jesse Lonis. All five of these players currently stand to potentially win Player of the Year. Matakis is currently well in the lead with 4,598 POY Points at the time of the writing of this article but could potentially be overtaken if any of his rivals were to outright win one of the remaining events.

Players will be given a 50,000 starting stack and everyone will have exactly one reentry available to them. Play is slated to start at 12 p.m. PDT with blinds starting at 100/200 with a 200 big blind ante. Blinds are set to increase every 30 minutes with a dinner break after 12 levels (approx. 7:45 p.m.). Late registration will also close at the end of dinner.

On a river reading 597910, Cliff "Flounder" Maloney went all in from the blinds and was snap-called by David "ODB" Baker. Maloney quickly tabled the 109 and Baker wordlessly stood up and bee-lined to the cage, which was just a stone's throw away.

Baker is already back in line to use his final entry and receive a new seat assignment.

Justin Bonomo, Anthony Zinno, Jeremy Becker, and Will Kassouf were also seen in the late registration line.

Michael Acevedo
Michael Acevedo

Bin Weng opened to 1,300 from middle position and was called by Michael Acevedo in the hijack and Will Kassouf on the button. A player in the big blind raised it to 7,500 and was called by all three players.

The flop came 865. The big blind bet 10,000 and Bin Weng raised it to 20,000. Acevedo, who covered all three players, moved all in, folding out Kassouf and the big blind while Weng made the call to put himself at risk.

Bin Weng: KQ
Michael Acevedo: A4

Acevedo had the best of it with a bigger flush draw and remained ahead on the J turn and 10 river to scoop a massive pot while sending Weng, who might reenter, to the rail.

Hastings Fires Another Bullet

Nível 6 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Brian Hastings
Brian Hastings

A player in late position raised to 1,250 and Brian Hastings made it 6,000 from the small blind. David Uvaydov took a few minutes to think about it and eventually settled on a raise to 12,000.

The late position player folded and Hastings made the call. Together they saw the 685. Hastings checked and Uvaydov bet 12,050. Hastings went all in and Uvaydov made a quick call.

Brian Hastings: A4
David Uvaydov: JJ

Hastings had a gut shot and an over card but the turn and river were bricks, awarding close to a double to Uvaydov.

Hastings was left wondering where the closest place to register again might be and made his way to the cage.

Hastings Makes a Hasty Exit; Agarwal Finds Fortune

Nível 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

A short-stacked Brian Hastings called the shove of Pushpa Agarwal and a flip commenced.

Brian Hastings: AK
Pushpa Agarwal: 55

The board ran out no luck for Hastings as it rolled 106J97.

Agarwal then went on to tell her table a funny story, as she had hopped in Event #83: $1,500 Short Deck without knowing the rules, in particular the switched hand ranking of flushes and full houses, as well as the way the ace worked both ways.

She did go on to cash the event and looked up the rules after the fact, making it a happy mistake.
