Yang Wang with the Big Stack in Event #83: $50,000 High Roller

Day 1 of Event #83: $50,000 High Roller at the 2023 World Series of Poker hosted by Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas was a smashing success with an impressive 137 entries, which already bested last year’s field of 107. After 12 levels of play, that number was brought down to only 44.

Yang Wang finished in the top of the counts with a whopping 2,175,000, closely followed by Fedor Holz (1,990,000) and Stefan Schilhabel (1,915,000). Holz actually bagged second in chips on Day 1 of this event last year, so he’s not too far off his mark this go round.

Plenty of big names battled throughout the day but weren’t able to find a bag, including the likes of Chris Brewer, Shaun Deeb, Alex Foxen, Kristen Foxen, and Isaac Haxton. Haxton made a late appearance but didn’t stay long as he was felted twice in a rather quick procession.

Popular Hustler Casino Live personality Wesley Fei bagged a healthy 1,295,000 after being moved to a tough table with Espen Jørstad (1,300,000) and Jason Koon (810,000). Fei joked with the bunch that all he wanted to do was bag and he asked the table not to bust him. Fei bagged about double what he bagged last year in this event and is assuredly looking to parlay that into a deep run on Day 2.

The 2023 $400 Colossus winner, Moshe Refaelowitz, was also in the field, making a huge leap after busting from the Main Event up to the high roller. He seemed comfortable enough and held his own throughout the day, bagging more than double the starting stack with 695,000 in chips.

High roller regulars Daniel Negreanu (685,000) and Cary Katz (690,000) also bagged similar stack and the pair will be quite a bit better off than if they had chosen to max late register on Day 2.

Late registration is still until the start of the tournament on Day 2, slated to begin on July 13 at 1:00 p.m local time.

This is only a small peek of the many notables in the field so make sure to tune in to PokerNews to see the outcome of this tremendous WSOP event.

Vieira Will Not See The End Of Day 1

Nível 12 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Joao Vieira
Joao Vieira

Action was caught when Alejandro Lococo found himself in a tough spot after Joao Vieira bet 325,000 on the river.

According to "PapoMC after the hand, he opened preflop from middle position, and Vieira called in the cutoff.

On the flop 33A and the turn 10, Lococo fired out two barrels, and both times, Vieira called. Then, on the river 9, Lococo checked, and Vieira bet almost his entire stack, as he kept only 12,000 chips in his hands.

Lococo took a full minute to make his decision, and he eventually called with AK for two pairs. It turned out to be the right move as Vieira had 88 for two lower pairs.

On the very next hand, Lococo flipped his cards again, but this time it was preflop after he called Matthias Eibinger's stack, which was approximately 370,000 chips.

Matthias Eibinger: KJ
Alejandro Lococo: A9

The board showed 53K74, and Eibinger hit a pair of kings, doubling up.

Right after, Eibinger was the one who called Vieira's very small stack.

Joao Vieira: Q7
Matthias Eibinger: AQ

On the board 9106A4, Vieira couldn't do much to stay in the tournament. He'll have to use his single reentry to win this event a second time.

Hunichen Hits the Rail; Haxton is Out Again

Nível 11 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Chris Hunichen
Chris Hunichen

Chris Hunichen was one of the few players who started the day right on time. His stack did fluctuate above and below starting but when he got down to his last 80,000 he went all in and was called by Steven Miranda.

Chris Hunichen: J9
Steve Miranda: A6

The flop came ace-high and Hunichen wasn't able to find running cards to pull ahead. Only time will tell if Hunichen hops back in the field.

Isaac Haxton had a short lived second bullet, as he was seen leaving the tournament area again shortly after reentering.

Haxton With a Quick U-Turn

Nível 10 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Isaac Haxton registered late but soon had an empty seat in his place. Table 117 relayed that Haxton had gotten it in with AxKx against the pocket queens of Henrick Hecklen. Hecklen's queens held up when the board ran out bricks for Haxton.

Fans of Haxton have no reason to fear, as he was already seen casually entering the tournament area with a fresh stack. No stranger to the game and entirely unphased, Haxton is also one who also got a bracelet this year in the $25,000 High Roller for $1,698,215.

Bryn Kenney
Bryn Kenney

Bryn Kenney was seen collecting his belongings at the dealer scooped up a paired board. Ramin Hajiyev had gone all-in preflop with the A6, and Kenney, down to about 80,000, made the call with the KJ. The ace-high of Hajiyev held, and Kenney was quick to leave the tournament area.

The very next hand, Bill Klein and Moshe Refaelowitz were heads-up to a flop of J72, and when Refaelowitz bet 15,000, Klein was quick to go all in for his remaining 182,000.

Refaelowitz got the count but ultimately pushed his hand in the muck.

Espen Uhlen Jørstad
Espen Uhlen Jørstad

Ramin Hajiyev raised from under the gun to 18,000 and Espen Jørstad reraised it to 54,000 from late position. Hajiyev thought shortly before calling.

The flop scrolled across, 7Q8 Hajiyev checked and Jørstad continued for 64,000, receiving a call. The turn brought the A and both players checked, although Jørstad used all the time allotted to him.

The river brought the 9 and this time both players checked quickly. Hajiyev showed the 1010 and Jørstad quickly tabled KK to scoop the pot.

Salas Doubles With Aces Through Chadha

Nível 7 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Damian Salas
Damian Salas

In the big blind, Damian Salas flipped his cards as he was at risk for 265,000 chips against Carlos Chadha in the cutoff.

Damian Salas: AA
Carlos Chadha: QQ

On 6K5910, Salas' aces held, and the 2020 WSOP Main Event champion doubled up.

On a subsequent hand, Chadha lost almost all his stack, and had only 41,000 chips remaining when he moved all in on the next hand. Alejandro Lococo was the only one to call.

Carlos Chadha: A10
Alejandro Lococo: KJ

On the flop 6AK, both players hit a pair, but Chadha stayed ahead. But the K came on the turn to give trips to Lococo. The 8 on the river didn't change anything, and Chadha left the area.

"I need a massage," he said when he saw a masseuse on his way to the exit.
