Jesse Kertland Bags Huge in Event #70: $400 Colossus

Nível 32 : Blinds 150,000/300,000, 300,000 ante
Jesse Kertland
Jesse Kertland

Players who made it through Day 1a and Day 1b combined into one field for a total of 1,980 competitors looking to make it through to Day 3. After a total of 15 levels of play that field was whittled down to only 80. This was an incredible run for everyone who has advanced thus far, as the Colossus here at the 2023 World Series of Poker, hosted by Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, attracted a monumental 15,983 entrants.

Some of those who finished up in the lead included Jesse Kertland (26,150,000), who made a huge call towards the end of the night to catapult him up in the counts; Kertland already had five cashes in this year’s WSOP coming into this event. Colin Robinson (22,300,000) also broke the twenty million mark but he won’t be playing for a lifetime highscore, as he’s coming off a runner up in Event #39: $1,500 Monster Stack for $718,000. Toshimasa Sakato (15,925,000) doesn’t trail too far behind, with most of his recorded cashes being in the 2021 and 2022 WSOP Online Bracelet events hosted by GGPoker.

James Dempsey (8,275,000) and Ian Steinman (7,700,000) remain the only two previous bracelet winners in the field but they weren’t the only two to start the day. 2005’s Player of the Year, Allen Cunningham was eliminated deep in Day 2 and 2021’s Ladies Champion, Lara Eisenberg also fell throughout the day.

Popular poker personalities Benjamin Spragg and Kevin Martin also made it deep in the money but came short of a bag. Martin's night came to an abrupt end shortly after having his queens cracked.

Day 3 will begin at 10:00 a.m. local time on July 3rd in the Paris ballroom. All player’s returning are guaranteed a payout of $5,930, but the apex everyone will be looking up to is a whopping $501,120 to go along with the hardware. Not a bad prize for a $400 buy-in.

Kevin Martin's Series of Unfortunate Events

Nível 31 : Blinds 125,000/250,000, 250,000 ante
Kevin Martin
Kevin Martin

Kevin Martin had his queens cracked by the ace-jack of Michael Young, which left him with about 1,500,000 in chips.

Just one hand later it folded to him in the small blind and he went all in, but his opponent did fold.

When it folded to Martin on the button the hand after that he went all in again for about 1,800,000 and the big blind made the call.

Kevin Martin: A3
Jonathan Edmondson: A4

Martin pulled out his phone to document the moment and went on to say he was just looking for a chop, as he wasn't a greedy man.

The flop was a sweat as rolled, Q7J, to which Martin said, "We need high cards that are not a club!" His wish came true on the turn when the K appeared, but the wind was taken from his sails when the 6 fell on the river, delivering the final blow.

Edmondson won the pot with his flush, shook hands with Martin, and said, "I had your number today..." as he shrugged and wished his opponent well.

Allen Cunningham
Allen Cunningham

James Rann raised in late position and was met with an all-in bet from Allen Cunningham for about 2,500,000. Rann called and put Cunningham at risk.

Allen Cunningham: A3
James Rann: AQ

The flop left Rann in the lead when it scrolled across, 698 and nothing changed when the K fell, leaving Cunningham looking for a three but the A fell instead. Rann's kicker played to award him the pot, as both players made top pair on the river.

Cunningham was met with fist bumps from the table, as the five-time bracelet winnner was well recognized.

Ten, Ten, Ten for Tenorio; Weisner Eliminated

Nível 27 : Blinds 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Melanie Weisner
Melanie Weisner

Just before the dinner break, Yvette Tenorio got into an all in altercation against Melanie Weisner.

Tenorio had woken up with pocket tens and Weisner had pocket queens, but when a ten came on the board, Tenorio might has well have shouted her name from the rooftops.

Just after returning from dinner:

Tenorio was facing an all in from Antonio Graham on her direct right and after some time, she went all in, isolating him as it folded back around.

Antonio Graham: J10
Yvette Tenorio: AK

The flop slid out 8Q8, giving Graham a gutshot. The 5 was of no help, and the A secured another knock out for Tenorio, skyrocketing her in the chip counts.

Kevin Martin
Kevin Martin

The action was picked up in a heads-up pot with roughly 190,000 in the middle on flop showing AK10. Kevin Martin checked from early position to his opponent on the button who bet out 85,000. Martin made the call and the pair saw the J turn.

Both players checked their options to the 5 river, and again the action went check-check. Martin tabled A3 for top pair and scooped the pot when the button mucked their cards.
