Stacked Field Returns for Day 2 of Event #69: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw Championship

Michael Moncek
Michael Moncek

Day 2 of Event #69: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw Championship at the 2023 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas sees 54 players return from a total of 126 Day 1 entries. That number will likely change, however, as late registration remains open until the start of the day.

A stacked field turned out for the high buy-in version of what many believe to be the purest form of poker. While Michael Moncek was able to bag the biggest with 452,000, his advantage heading into the day can only be considered slight given the level of competition he will be up against. For example, all five top place finishers in the $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw remain in contention with 4th place Jon Turner bagging an impressive 270,000, good for third in the chip counts.

Day 2 restarts at 1 p.m. in the Paris Purple section with blinds resuming at 1,500/3,000 with a 4,500 ante. Levels will be 90-minutes in length for the remainder of the tournament and the plan heading into the day is to whittle the field down to five players.

Shak Makes Obst Break a Better Ten, Leaves Him on Fumes

Nível 11 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 4,500 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

Dan Shak raised to 7,500 and faced a three-bet from James Obst on the button to 25,000. Shak jammed for around 105,000 and Obst made the call.

Shak stood pat which sent Obst into the tank to decide if he needed to break his hand and draw to a better low. After a few minutes, he decided to draw one.

Dan Shak: 108654
James Obst: 8532

Once the hands were up, it was clear that Obst had broken a better ten and was now drawing to beat Shak's ten-eight low. Unfortunately for Obst, he drew the 3 to pair his three and send the pot to Shak, leaving himself with half a big blind.

Prizepool and Payouts

Nível 11 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 4,500 ante

With late registration now closed, the prizepool and payouts have been confirmed. A total of 154 entries generated a prizepool of $1,432,200 that will be split amongst the top 24 finishers. Anyone who finishes in the money is guaranteed a minimum of $16,000 with $367,599 and a WSOP gold bracelet set to go the eventual winner's way.

Elezra Leaves Li Short

Nível 12 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 6,000 ante

Eli Elezra raised to 13,000 from the cutoff before seeing Yingui Li put in a three-bet to 38,000 from the button.

Elezra, clearly far from done raising the action, slid out a four-bet to 103,000. Li though briefly before putting in the call, leaving himself only 45,500 in stack headed to the draw.

Elezra said, "I'm pat" as Li drew one.

Elezra stood from the table and put out a bet big enough to set Li all in then walked to the rail to have a short conversation with a friend. He came back quickly enough to watch Li peel his drawn card and toss a queen into the middle of the table, saying, "Shit!" before tossing his other four cards into the muck.

Elezra said, "You were drawing dead" before tossing his own cards in the muck and collecting the pot.

Monnette Doubles Through Volpe in Massive Confrontation

Nível 13 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 7,500 ante
John Monnette
John Monnette

Paul Volpe raised to 13,500 from middle position and faced a three-bet from Tobias Schwecht on the button to 37,000.

John Monnette four-bet jammed for 101,500 from the small blind to send action back to Volpe who didn't wait too long before five-bet jamming for 183,500.

Schwecht tanked for about three minutes before finally letting it go and sending Volpe and Monnette to a heads up draw.

Monnette stood pat which sent Volpe into a three minute tank of his own while he decided on whether or not he needed to break a made hand to beat Monnette.

Eventually, Volpe did pat behind and Monnette quickly turned up 87542 which was good against the 98543 of Volpe.

Vengrin Doubles Through Mercier

Nível 14 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 9,000 ante
Matt Vengrin
Matt Vengrin

Young Ko raised under the gun to 15,000 and Jason Mercier called from the small blind.

Matt Vengrin three-bet jammed from the big blind for 106,000.

Ko folded the action back to Mercier who thought briefly before putting in a call.

Both Mercier and Vengrin drew one card each and turned the other four over to sweat the squeeze.

Matt Vengrin: 9543
Jason Mercier: 7642

Mercier went to the draw ahead but upon squeezing his fifth card, he turned over the 4, pairing his four and giving Vengrin great odds to win as long as he could avoid pairing his nine or five.

Vengrin squeezed and turned over the 6, good for a full double.

Riess Sends Sammartino to the Rail Two Short of the Money

Nível 15 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 12,000 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

Ryan Riess raised to 20,000 from early position and Dario Sammartino jammed from the small blind for 104,000.

The big blind folded and Riess made the call to put Sammartino at risk.

Both players stood pat and turned their cards up.

Riess was quick to table 87532 which caused Sammartino to stand up and toss his cards toward the muck as he gathered his things to head toward the exit two from the money.

With the elimination of Sammartino, there are now 25 players remaining and play has entered the hand-for-hand portion of the tournament with only one more elimination going home empty handed.

Jen Harman Bubbles Event #69: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw Championship

Nível 15 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 12,000 ante
Jennifer Harman
Jennifer Harman

Picking up the action after the draw, Jen Harman from under the gun was involved in a hand with Young Ko on the button. Harman checked to Ko who bet enough to put her all in. Harman appeared to be in a very difficult spot as players from the other three tables began to gather round with their hands completed. With the Colossus on break, a crowd had also materialized on the rail, all eyes on an old school poker legend making a decision for her tournament life.

Eventually, she made the call but found out the bad news when Ko announced "number three" before turning over 7x6x5x3x2x. Harman tossed her chips across the table, whether out of jest or frustration, it was not clear, and then made her exit on the pure bubble.

All remaining players have now locked up $16,000, but no one will be happy to settle for that amount with $367,599 up top to go along with a coveted WSOP gold bracelet.
