Big Pots, No Fear, and a Bit of Controversy Leads Kopp to $1,500 PLO8 Day 2 Lead

Nível 25 : Blinds 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
William Kopp
William Kopp

A wild day that saw rapid eliminations from the opening ‘shuffle up and deal’ right until the final hand of the night saw 12 players survive with William Kopp carrying a sizeable chip lead into the final day.

Kopp takes 7,500,000 chips into Friday’s final day of Event #66: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better with WSOP Player of the Year contender Michael Rodrigues in second with less than half of that at 3,650,000.

Among the others to advance are two-time WSOP bracelet winners Yuval Bronshtein and Loni Hui, along with four-time winner Anthony Zinno.

Kopp accumulated his chips steadily throughout the ten levels, then played some huge pots late in the day that went his way, including a notable one before the final break that needed a senior tournament official to make a ruling. The pot went Kopp’s way but could have been even larger had the ruling been different.

Regardless, Kopp takes a huge lead into Day 3, while many notables weren’t as fortunate, but at least with the money bubble bursting on Day 1 they were guaranteed money entering the Horseshoe Event Center Thursday.

Among those to take home consolation prizes were former WSOP Player of the Year Robert Campbell (17th - $9,908), Women in Poker Hall of Famer JJ Liu (42nd - $5,745), five-time bracelet winner John Monnette (75th - $3,488), and six-time bracelet winner and former WSOP Player of the Year Jeff Lisandro (123rd - $2,634).

This dangerous dozen will now return to the Horseshoe feature tables at 1 p.m. local time on June 30 to play down to a winner, beginning with Level 26 and blinds of 30,000 / 60,000 with a 60,000 big blind ante.

Each player has guaranteed themselves a five-figure payday of $12,257, but they’re just a few hours of skill and fortune away from the top prize of $259,549 and a WSOP gold bracelet.

PokerNews will be there until a champion is crowned, so stay with us for our continuing coverage from Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Ashish Gupta
Ashish Gupta

Ashish Gupta raised to 170,000 on the button and Sterling Savill three-bet enough from the big blind to put Gupta all in for his remaining stack. Gupta called and hands were revealed.

Ashish Gupta: A865
Sterling Savill: 9743

The 5QK flop gave Savill a flush, and the 6 turn and J river were of no help to Gupta, who was eliminated in 13th place.

Jared Koppel Eliminated in 14th Place ($12,257)

Jared Koppel
Jared Koppel

With a sizeable pot already built by the 374 flop, Jared Koppel moved all in for a bit over 500,000. William Kopp called to put him at risk.

Jared Koppel: A432
William Kopp: AQ53

Koppel was well ahead with two pair and the nut low, but there was one card that could be disastrous for him.

It was the 2, which came on the turn, filling Kopp's gutshot to a wheel. The A on the river changed nothing, and Kopp's wheel drove Koppel right out of the tournament area, while solidifying his chip lead.

Rodrigues Scores Huge Double Through Disbelieving Gupta

Nível 25 : Blinds 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Michael Rodrigues
Michael Rodrigues

Michael Rodrigues raised to 100,000 on the button and got three-bet by Ashish Gupta in the big blind. Rodrigues called to see the flop.

It came 998 and Gupta led out for 150,000. Rodrigues then potted it to 1,175,000, sending Gupta into the tank.

After a couple of minutes, Gupta moved all in and Rodrigues called, creating another near four million chip pot.

Michael Rodrigues: 9654
Ashish Gupta: AAK2

Gupta told Rodrigues he didn't think he had a nine, but indeed he did. The 7 river brought Gupta some hope for half the pot with a low, but the 8 double-paired the board, sending the massive pot to Rodrigues, who is now poised to add significantly more points in his chase for WSOP Player of the Year.

Rami Boukai Eliminated in 15th Place ($12,257)

Nível 24 : Blinds 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Rami Boukai
Rami Boukai

Sterling Savill raised to 90,000 on the button and got a call from Rami Boukai in the big blind.

On the QK8 flop, Boukai bet 125,000 and Savill called.

The turn J brought massive fireworks, as after Boukai checked, Savill bet 300,000. Boukai then check-raised pot, which was his entire stack and Savill called.

The four million chip pot saw the players show down the following hands.

Rami Boukai: A1044
Sterling Savill: A1062

Each player had Broadway, but Savill had a redraw to a diamond flush.

With the 6d] on the river, Savill made his flush to claim the massive pot, and after the players stacks were counted down, Savill barely had Boukai covered to eliminate him from the tournament and send Savill toward the chip lead.

Sterling Savill opened to 90,000 from early position and Michael Rodrigues called from the cutoff. Sterling Lopez then reraised pot from the button and action folded back to Savill, who reraised pot again. Rodrigues folded and Lopez called off for his remaining stack.

Sterling Lopez: A772
Sterling Savill: AKQ3

The board ran out Q106K4 — leaving Savill best with a flush and eliminating Lopez in 16th place.

Robert Campbell Eliminated in 17th Place ($9,908)

Robert Campbell
Robert Campbell

Picking action up on the flop with 420,000 in the middle and a flop of AQ4, Rami Boukai bet the pot from the big blind.

Robert Campbell then moved all in for just over 900,000 and after some deliberation, Joseph McCarthy also moved in for about 450,000.

Boukai called and a massive pot was brewing.

Joseph McCarthy: A642
Robert Campbell: AQ104
Rami Boukai: A953

The turn brought the J, giving Boukai a flush and the potential to scoop the massive pot with his low draw as well.

The river was the 3, counterfeiting Boukai's better low and giving it to McCarthy instead to take that half of the pot, while Campbell's pairs were scooped into the muck and he was sent to the rail.

Rami Boukai raised to 140,000 on the button and Yuval Bronshtein three-bet to 640,000 from the small blind. Sean Remz called all in for less from the big blind and Boukai called as well.

Bronshtein made a bet on the K52 flop and Boukai quickly folded.

Sean Remz: AJ102
Yuval Bronshtein: AK64

The 3 turn left Bronshtein with a wheel and a meaningless 8 river completed the board — eliminating Remz in 18th place.

Philipp Krieger raised to 120,000 in the small blind and got a call from Ryan Bambrick in the big blind.

On the J42 flop, Krieger bet 210,000, Bambrick moved all in for a bit more and Krieger called.

Ryan Bambrick: Q873
Philipp Krieger: K832

Bambrick actually had very little to work with, and despite the 6A runout, Krieger's pair of deuces and deuce-three were enough to take the entire pot and eliminate Bambrick.
