Rodrigues on Verge of Second Bracelet and POY Lead in $1,500 PLO8

Michael Rodrigues
Michael Rodrigues

With a play style as flashy as his crocs & socks combos, Michael Rodrigues has made quite the splash this summer en route to becoming a major player in the World Series of Poker Player of the Year race.

Rodrigues currently sits sixth in the POY standings, but if he can take his already deep run in Event #66: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better a bit further or even win, he’ll be at the top of the list.

The Portuguese star, who already has a bracelet this summer, enters the day second in chips behind William Kopp, but he’s shown throughout the WSOP that he isn’t afraid to play big pots, sometimes with unorthodox hands, as demonstrated Thursday in his ascent up the leaderboard.

William Kopp
William Kopp

Rodrigues and Kopp will still have to navigate a field with ten remaining opponents including bracelet winners Yuval Bronshtein, Loni Hui, Anthony Zinno, and Aaron Wallace. That’s not even to mention players like John Goyette, Mike Linster, and Sterling Savill who join Rodrigues and Kopp with over three million chips to start the day.

Linster Doubles Through Kopp

Mike Linster
Mike Linster

William Kopp and Mike Linster were heads-up on a 3210 flop. Kopp checked from the small blind and Linster bet 175,000 on the button. Kopp then raised to 745,000 and Linster called.

The A fell on the turn and Kopp bet the size of the pot. Linster quickly shoved for just over three million and Kopp called to put Linster at risk.

Mike Linster: AK54
William Kopp: A764

Linster held the wheel and Kopp's flush draw bricked out on the J river — awarding Linster the scoop and full double up in the massive pot.

Yuval Bronshtein raised to 280,000 from under the gun and William Kopp three-bet to 500,000. Anthony Zinno called cold on the button. Philipp Krieger called in the big blind and Bronshtein called all in for less.

The flop came 8104 and Krieger shoved for his remaining stack. Kopp raised the pot and Zinno let his hand go after a lengthy tank.

Philipp Krieger: KQJ10
Yuval Bronshtein: 7755
William Kopp: AQ102

Loni Hui Eliminated in 6th Place ($44,391)

Nível 29 : Blinds 60,000/120,000, 120,000 ante
Loni Hui
Loni Hui

A pair of notable hands have led to the elimination of Loni Hui.

First, after limping under the gun, she called a raise to 500,000 from Michael Rodrigues on the button.

Hui called to see a flop of Q84, then checked and faced a pot-sized bet of 1,380,000 from Rodrigues which barely covered Hui's stack.

Hui opted to fold and choose to fight at another time.

That time came in the following hand, as after a raise to 420,000 from William Kopp under the gun, Hui called in the big blind.

On the Q49 flop, Hui moved all in for her last 710,000. Kopp called and Hui was at risk.

Loni Hui: AQ82
William Kopp: KK94

Hui's top pair of queens trailed Kopp's kings. The 8 on the turn gave Hui hope for a low with her ace-deuce, though it did give Kopp an added flush draw.

The K on the river ended Hui's day, giving Kopp a winning set of kings to extend his significant chip lead.

Joseph McCarthy Eliminated in 5th Place ($59,953)

Joseph McCarthy
Joseph McCarthy

After a raise from Mike Linster to 250,000 from under the gun, William Kopp made it 930,000 to go from the cutoff.

Joseph McCarthy was left to a decision for his remaining 405,000 in the small blind, and after a minute or so of thought, he moved all in.

Linster folded and left McCarthy's fate to the chip leader.

Joseph McCarthy: AQ73
William Kopp: AAQ5

McCarthy told his rail that he had diamonds working for him, with the J105 flop bringing him one along with a gutshot Broadway draw.

His flush draw got closer with the 8 turn, but the Q on the river brought him no further help, keeping Kopp's aces ahead to eliminate McCarthy.
