Garza made trips queens with the Q♦ river and he gave it some thought before betting 800,000. Halatenko didn't believe him and paid to get shown the bad news.

Halatenko Increases Lead

Lou Garza opened preflop with a raise to 600,000 from the button. Stanislav Halatenko called from the small blind with A♥8♥7♦6♠, as did Morris from the big blind with A♣10♣5♥5♣.

The flop came 6♥Q♥3♥, giving Garza a flush but Halatenko the nut flush. Action checked all around. The 8♣ hit the turn, and Halatenko led out for 850,000. Garza made the call.

The river brought the 7♣. Halatenko led out for 2,700,000, and Garza went into the tank. After about three minutes, he made the call and saw the higher flush of his opponent. Halatenko raked in the massive pot.

Garza checked the 9♣8♥Q♣ flop. Halatenko led out for 425,000 and was called.

The turn was the 8♦, and Garza checked with eights full. Halatenko led out for 950,000, unknowingly drawing dead. Garza considered his next move for a minute, and made the call.

The A♥ arrived on the river, and Garza checked once more. Halatenko checked behind, denying Garza a bit of extra value but still awarding him a nice-sized pot.

Negreanu Proposes Changes to the Poker Hall of Fame Induction Process

With its ever-growing backlog of deserving players and industry professionals waiting for their time to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, some players are calling for changes to the nomination and induction process.

One of those players is Daniel Negreanu, poker's biggest ambassador and himself a member of the Poker Hall of Fame who was inducted in 2014. Negreanu has long called for overhauls to the Poker Hall of Fame nomination process and renewed his calls this week on his daily vlog during the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP).

"How I would fix the Hall of Fame is this: every single year, two players get in — players, not contributors," Negreanu told his vlog viewers. "Every single year, two players get in. Every third year ... we add an additional third person who is a contributor to the game. That would be the Isai Scheinbergs and the Matt Savages of the world. Every three years, one of them would get in. That way, we don't have to constantly compare apples to oranges."

Shan Doubles Right Before the Break

Shan wandered back to his rail and Pearson shook his head on the Q♦10♣6♠ flop as Shan had picked up 19 outs to avoid elimination. Nothing changed on the 3♥ turn but the 8♠ river improved him to the queen-high straight. Shan didn't realise it at first before he burst out in celebration.

Right after the hand, the five remaining players went on their first scheduled 15-minute break.

Both players went to their rail to await the final card. The 6♠ hit the river and Morris celebrated doubling up.

The 10♦ followed on the turn and Halatenko fired a bet worth 1,300,000 this time. Morris folded the best hand at that point as he eyeballed the other stacks around him before letting go.
