A record-breaking 556 players entered Event #24: $1,500 Razz, making it the largest live razz tournament in World Series of Poker history. The number shatters the previous record from 2015 of 462 entries.

With that many players in the field, a prize pool of $742,260 was created, and the winner will take home an impressive $152,991 and a WSOP gold bracelet, while 84 players will collect at least a min-cash of $2,409.

Leading the way into Day 2 will be Maksim Pisarenko who bagged 251,500 for the chip lead. Not far behind him, though, are Vasilis Lazarou with 223,500 and two-time bracelet winner Yuval Bronshtein with 207,000.

Of the record-breaking field, 170 players advanced on to Day 2, with plenty of notables bagging chips, including former WSOP Players of the Year Jeff Madsen (190,000), Shaun Deeb (80,000), and David Bach (51,500), multi-time bracelet winners Michael Moncek, (187,000), David "ODB" Baker (185,000), and Marco Johnson (91,500), and Hall of Famer Tom McEvoy (157,000).

Day 2 resumes at 1 p.m. local time on June 10th in the Gold section of the Horseshoe Event Center. Levels will be extended to 60 minutes and ten of them will be played, starting at limits of 4,000 and 8,000, with the money bubble expected to be reached midway through the day.

Picking action up four-handed on fifth street, Tom McEvoy bet, and got two opponents to fold, but on remained. On sixth street, both players caught nines, but McEvoy's opponent's nine paired him.

Regardless, McEvoy got a call and then bet dark on seventh street. His opponent quickly called to see the Hall of Famer show an eight-seven to take a sizeable pot that has him among the largest stacks in the room as the night draws toward a close.

In his extremely popular vlog, Daniel Negreanu has shown his affinity for making a delicious-looking berry compote as part of his breakfast routine. So it's quite a unique coincidence that a man named Berry has eliminated him from this event.

Negreanu, Berry, and Jose Paz-Gutierrez each went to fourth street holding a three. Negreanu got his last T-1,000 chip in with the other two, then on fifth street Berry called and Paz-Gutierrez folded.

Berry had already made a seven, leaving Negreanu drawing dead.

Picking the action up on third street, Allen completed, Gerhart raised and Allen called. Allen bet on fourth when Gerhart spiked a queen to Allen's three, and again on fifth. Gerhart took control on sixth. As Allen pondered his decision on seventh, Gerhart said, "You paired your three. I almost raised you on fifth." With this information, both players checked.

Gerhart turned over a 96. Allen laughed and said, "Actually I paired my queen," and folded. "I guess if you're going to lose a hand, you might as well do it to a four-time bracelet winner, and the 2019 winner of this event."

"The table is trying to teach me razz," Depaulo said. "But so far I don't think I'm learning much."

The dealer did just that, Rosengarten bet, and took down the hand. "Shot caller!" exclaimed the dealer.

Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Strelitz, Max Pescatori and Others Go Bracelet Hunting in the $1,500 Razz Streets

Daniel Strelitz
Daniel Strelitz

It’s time at the 2023 World Series of Poker for razz, where the lowest hand wins, and the suits don’t matter. Event #24: $1,500 Razz kicks of at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, the first of two Razz events occurring this WSOP. The popular stud-game variant has been a staple of the WSOP for decades (and featured the excellent Robert Altman California Split film starring Elliott Gould and George Segal) and this year sees the two tournaments once again placed back-to back, with Event #33: $10,000 Razz Championship coming June 13th.

Last year’s champion of the event was Daniel Strelitz, winning his second career bracelet, prevailing over a field of 383. Strelitz beat Lynda Tran heads up on his way to adding $115,723 to his $2,139,958 WSOP earnings. His first bracelet came in the $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em event in 2019 (he also finished second in that event last year). This one, coming in a game that he’s studied hard to figure out, was that much sweeter.

“It’s awesome. I’m especially happy that it’s in a non-No-Limit Hold’em event since that’s what I’ve been concentrating on recently. But, yeah, number two is great,” he said following his win.

Other previous winners of the $1,500 Razz event include Brad Ruben, Kevin Gerhart, Max Pescatori, and Phil Hellmuth. Hellmuth has two of his 16 bracelets and a second-place finish in the razz discipline, and so will be looking to add to that total this year. The event is sure to draw some of the biggest names in mixed-game poker.

Play begins at 2:00 p.m. local time, Players will start with 25,000 chips, with level 1 at 200-400 limits. Fifteen 40-minute levels will be played, with 15-minute breaks every three levels. Late registration will close after nine levels, approximately 8:45 p.m.
