Where Are They Now: Ron “The Carolina Express” Stanley Battled Stu Ungar at 1997 WSOP

Nível 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Ron Stanley
Ron Stanley

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Ron “The Carolina Express” Stanley, 70, was one of the most feared players in the game. In fact, he even went toe-to-toe with the legendary Stu Ungar at the final table of the 1997 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. It was there that Stanley donned a tuxedo while playing in the intense Las Vegas heat on Fremont Street.

Stanley, who has been playing poker for a living for “at least 50 years,” was recently spotted at the 2022 WSOP and was kind enough to chat with PokerNews.

“My dad used to play poker and he’d take me to the games when I was a kid,” he said about how he learned poker in the first place. “I was watching and it got pretty interesting. He was pretty good at it and I picked it up from him. It’s in my blood I guess.”

While he hasn’t had any major tournament scores since before the Poker Boom, Stanley is still on the grind.

“I play poker 5-6 days a week at least, mostly cash games,” he said. “In Vegas, I mostly play at South Point, but I’ve been in South Carolina for six months playing a lot of home games.”

Winter and Kiletto Battle in the Blinds

Nível 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante

Sean Winter limped in from the small blind and Lily Kiletto raised to 1,500 from the big blind. Winter responded with a re-raise to 7,800 which got a reaction from Kiletto.

"You're so full of shit," Kiletto sparred. "I never fold this hand. The first time you did this though. Show me one," she pleaded as she laid her hand down.

"The queen or the six?" Winter asked as he spread his cards. Kiletto chose the {q-Spades} but the other cards went into the muck.

"What did you actually have?" Kiletto pleaded.

"Queen-six. I wouldn't lie to you," Winter responded.

"For sure queen-six," Anthony Spinella piped in.

Gathy Ships Little Boat Up River

Nível 6 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante

On a heads-up flop of {k-Clubs}{2-Spades}{a-Clubs}, Jonathan Little check-raised a bet of 1,200 to 3,500 from his opponent, Michael Gathy, who called.

The turn was the {10-Spades} and Little led out for 11,000 but was soon raised all in by Gathry, Little called and tabled {k-Spades}{10-Hearts} for two pair. However, Little then rolled over {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} for a flopped set and had Gathry drawing thin.

But apparently not thin enough as the {k-Hearts} hit the river and gave Gathry the bigger fullhouse and eliminated Little.

"Well GG, boys. He trapped me real good," Little told the table as he stood up and gathered his things.

In a three-bet pot, Vanessa Kade and Ole Schemion were heads-up on a flop of {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Kade checked from the cutoff and Schemion tossed in a bet of 6,500 on the button. Kade check-raised to 20,000 but was met with a min-four-bet to 33,500. Kade called and the {2-Diamonds} landed on the turn.

Kade started with a check and Schemion ripped all in for roughly 32,000. Kade instantly mucked her cards and Schemion dragged in the pot.

Vogelsang Calls Faris' Bluff

Nível 6 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante

Christoph Vogelsang raised to 2,000 in the cutoff and Joshua Faris defended from the big blind. The flop came {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and Faris check-called a bet of 2,300 from Vogelsang.

The {k-Spades} paired the board on the turn and both players checked to the {5-Clubs} on the river. Faris led out with a bet of 4,500 and Vogelsang gave it some thought. After a minute, the German called and Faris showed {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a missed flush draw. Vogelsang also missed his flush with {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} but his ace-kicker was good enough to win the pot.

Mulders Eliminates Song

Nível 6 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante

After losing a large pot previously, Stephen Song was all in for his last 100, with Daan Mulders and another player still in.

The flop was {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and Mulders called a bet of 1,000 from his opponent.

The turn was the {9-Clubs} and both players checked to the river {k-Clubs} and Mulders check-raised his opponent from 2,000 to 11,000 which prompted a quick fold.

Mulders then tabled {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a flopped straight and Song flipped over {6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} for a pair of sixes and was eliminated as Mulders scooped the pt to boost his chipstack to 230,000.
